Abstract

A resonance ionization mass spectrometry (RIMS) system has been developed at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for sensitive and selective determination of radio-cesium in the environment. The overall efficiency was determined to be 4x10[SUP-7] with a combined (laser and mass spectrometer) selectivity of 10[SUP8] for both [SUP135]Cs and [SUP137]Cs with respect to [SUP133]Cs. RIMS isotopic ratio measurements of [SUP135]Cs/ [SUP137]Cs were performed on a nuclear fuel burn-up sample and compared to measurements on a similar system at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and to conventional thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS). Results of preliminary RIMS investigations on a freshwater lake sediment sample are also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
