The article presents an analysis of the relationship between gender, success in business, microfinance programs, and group loans as opposed to individual loans. An overview of related research is provided, along with a set of propositions and hypotheses related to such studies. It is argued that group loans are more suitable for rural environments, and that individual loans work better for urban locations. Self-selected groups of females are said to be particularly suitable candidates for group loans in rural settings. Males, on average, are thought to do better with individual loans.

The article focuses on a conference paper on certain differences in loan documentation and closing requirements, arising from the lender's different sources of funds, presented during the 2004 International Council of Shopping Centers' (ICSC) Law Conference, held during October 27-30, 2004. Information regarding the conventional portfolio loans held by a single mortgage lender is provided. Explanation regarding the credit loans, loans made to financially creditworthy borrowers is given.
