17. Adjustment of Children Reared by Their Grandparents.

Abstract

This paper explores the factors involved in the adjustment of children who must live with grandparents. Some studies indicate these children may be at higher risk for the development of psychopathology and pre-delinquent behavior. In contrast, other studies seem to indicate the love and care of supportive grandparents can lessen the impact of a previously discordant family. The paper summarizes three themes from the literature concerning grandparents: (1) When children with absent parents live with their grandparents, they are much more vulnerable to emotional and behavioral problems; (2) high quality parent-child relationships reduce the impact of stress on children; and (3) the grandparent-grandchild relationship may provide a significant nurturing and buffering environment for children living with them. Recent studies explored the adjustment of grandchildren being raised by grandparents and found two important factors: (1) the quality of the relationship; and (2) the income level. Two studies performed imply that children can achieve a relatively problem free adjustment when living with caring grandparents. The paper cautions that these results should not be generalized since the sample population was quite small and not randomly selected, and the quality of relationship scores were skewed. Abstract

High fidelity small crack growth rate data is essential to accurately predict the growth of small fatigue cracks. These data are best obtained from direct measurements of fatigue cracks grown from small initiating discontinuities. Therefore, it can be beneficial to have a reliable and repeatable experimental method for nucleating small fatigue cracks. It is also essential to sample a large area of material to find the preferential material features, conditions or grain structure required to grow the most severe fatigue cracks (lead fatigue cracks). The Defence Science and Technology Group, in partnership with the Micro Nano Research Facility (MNRF) at RMIT University, have utilised a laser-etching method, using a DCT DL561U UV laser, to apply an array of very small laser-etched slots to the surface of test coupons to nucleate fatigue cracks. This method has been used to initiate small fatigue cracks in a range of aerospace aluminium alloys, including 7075-T7351, 2024-T351 and 7085-T7452. A number of test coupons have been fatigued to failure and the profile of the laser-etched slots examined. The results presented here demonstrated the laser-etching method exhibited excellent control in governing the size and shape of discontinuities and has been successfully applied to generate small fatigue crack growth rate data in several materials. Having a reliable and repeatable method for nucleating fatigue cracks can increase the likelihood of nucleating lead fatigue cracks and can significantly reduce the variability of fatigue test results attributed to large variations in naturally occurring fatigue crack initiating discontinuities. Abstract

The Australian Department of Defence's Resilient Multi-Mission Space (RMS) Science, Technology and Research (STaR) Shot is a strategic research program established to develop future space technologies, demonstrating capability through a series of small satellite launches. A key theme of the RMS STaR Shot is to increase the resilience of the satellites and constellations to provide mission assurance for Defence. An important issue for resilience is the effect of atomic oxygen, one of the most significant hazards or risks to satellite materials in the low earth orbit. Materials intended for use on satellites are typically tested in ground-based facilities to match the atomic oxygen fluence experienced during satellite missions. However, in order to correlate these ground-based experiments to in-space results, the atomic oxygen fluence must be accurately measured both on the ground and in-space. The design of atomic oxygen fluence sensors for in-space experiments vary depending on many factors, including mission duration, orbit altitude, and whether or not the experiment is retrievable. This paper provides a review of the current state of art in atomic oxygen fluence sensors for in-space experiments for both retrievable and non-retrievable sensors. The review details the design of several fluence sensors utilised by different space organisations around the world, focusing on those developed recently. The outcome of this research will support resilient technology development in the RMS STaR Shot, as well as calibrating the ground-based extreme environment testing capabilities currently being developed by the Defence Science and Technology Group. The design, manufacture and implementation of an atomic oxygen sensor specifically created for the RMS satellite mission objectives will be essential to validation and verification of in-space atomic oxygen experimental results.
