The Motoric-Perceptual-Conceptual/Behavioral (MPC/B) model, a developmentally eclectic approach to evaluating and remediating learning disabilities in children, is described. The model is explained to view learners and the learning process on three educational levels (preschool, elementary school, and high school/post school), on three subject matter levels (reading, math, and science), and on three developmental levels (motoric, perceptual, and conceptual/behavioral). Emphasized within the MPC/B model is the importance of evaluation in seven areas, including auditory/hearing tests, visually oriented tests, and educational/academic tests. (CL)

Topics discussed include the drill hole thickness and freeboard measurements, use of a three-dimensional (3D0 laser scanner to collect a point cloud of snow/ice surface and mechanically scanning single-beam sonars.

How well do the sibling correlations reflect the family background? This is studied by analyzing the life course variation of sibling correlations using Finnish register data, including information on 57,050 children born 1956-1970. Education as levels and years and occupational status as EGP-classes and ISEI scores of the siblings are measured two times between the ages of 20-29, 25-34, 30-39 and 35-44 during the period 1970-2005. The data on children are matched with the education and class of the parents when children were 10-14 years old. According to the results the variation at both family and individual level increases as the siblings grow older but the correlations do not change much. The correlations are highest, around 0.5, when education is measured as levels; it remains at the level of 0.3 in the case of others. However, the proportion of the sibling correlation explained by the observed parental characteristics is about the same according to each type of status measurement. The results suggest controlling observed parental characteristics in order to estimate the family background effect even when applying sibling correlations. Despite the stability over the life course the sibling correlations may vary considerably according to the type of status measurement applied. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
