Numerous empirical studies have documented how the labor- market networks in which individuals are embedded influence their job attainment. Much less attention has been paid to what these findings imply for macro-level outcomes such as the extent to which the market becomes segregated along various sociodemographic dimensions. This article seeks to partially correct this imbalance in the literature. It focuses on the ethnic and gender segregation of labor markets, and it uses a combination of choice-based statistical modeling and large- scale agent-based simulations to improve our understanding of the links between micro and macro dynamics. Using a unique longitudinal data set on the entire population of the Stockholm metropolitan area for the years 1990-2003, the analyses suggest that the more important networks are for individuals' mobility in the labor market, the less segregated the market is likely to become along gender and ethnic lines.
