In the last 20 years, industrialized Western nations have witnessed a marked increase in rightwing social movements and political parties. While the origins and agendas of these groups differ in important ways, all arose in a climate of intensifying globalization. All arose in the context of a widespread embrace of multiculturalism and cultural diversity. And all are keenly focused on the perceived threats posed by immigration. This paper examines immigration threat narratives constructed by four of these groups-the British National Party, the One Nation Party, the Tea Party Patriots and the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps. Striking similarities in the narratives employed by these groups suggest the emergence of a transnational right-wing populist "playbook." The paper further argues that even when the direct electoral impact of such groups is relatively small, they have the potential to substantially reshape broader political discourse and public policy. This article builds on previous research to examine how men use social movements that are not explicitly gendered as a space to perform masculinity. Using ethnography, the author demonstrates how members of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps perform masculinity through their physical appearance, the use of icons, and references to militarism. Further, they exaggerate the danger they face and their personal bravery to claim an identity of ideal manhood. The Minutemen Civil Defense Corps, an anti-immigrant militia, having emerged concurrently with Obama's rise to fame and subsequent societal claims of post-raciality, is a unique organization through which one can examine contemporary right wing discourse. This paper is part of a larger project on the production of knowledge on the right, comparing extremist and more mainstream organizations. In particular, this paper builds off of previous scholarship on the formation of gender in right wing movements to examine how gender is constructed and performed differently in groups of the dissident right as compared to those of the extreme right. The literature on economic globalization and the parallel literature on global human rights mobilization operate in relative isolation. This article integrates ideas from both literatures to examine whether and how different components of child rights mobilization and economic neoliberalism affect education spending within poor and middle-income countries. The results show that both World Polity Theory, which emphasizes the cultural side of globalization, and World Systems Theory, which emphasizes the economic side of globalization, are useful.
