Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) make high-quality learning accessible to students from all over the world. On the other hand, they are known to exhibit low student performance and high dropout rates. Early prediction of student performance in MOOCs can help teachers intervene in time in order to improve learners' future performance. This is particularly important in healthcare courses, given the acute shortages of healthcare staff and the urgent need to train data-literate experts in the healthcare field. In this paper, we analysed a health data science MOOC taken by over 3,000 students. We developed a novel three-step pipeline to predict student performance in the early stages of the course. In the first step, we inferred the transitions between students' low-level actions from their clickstream interactions. In the second step, the transitions were fed into Artificial Neural Network (ANN) that predicted student performance. In the final step, we used two explanation methods to interpret the ANN result. Using this approach, we were able to predict learners' final performance in the course with an AUC ranging from 83% to 91%. We found that students who interacted predominately with lab, project, and discussion materials outperformed students who interacted predominately with lectures and quizzes. We used the DiCE counterfactual method to automatically suggest simple changes to the learning behaviour of low- and moderate-performance students in the course that could potentially improve their performance. Our topic is focused on health education within the school curriculum. It's to emphasize its importance in the short and long-course during the learning and growth process. Healthy diet presents an outstanding medium in enhancing cognitive efficiency and helps in assisting the acquisition process. Adopting a guided nutriment practice participates in empowering young individuals to better manage their consuming habits. It has been outlined in several studies across continents how food behaviorism, lifestyle factors, poor quality nutrients can compromise intellectual efficiency in the stage of knowledge acquisition alongside health issues. This has drawn serious concerns to governments and institutions (WHO, UNICEF, European Union, and states) to outpoint the impact of nutriments, notably their type and quality, on childhood health and development. Our paper is set to deliver scientific-based evidence through selected studies conducted across the globe on health and nutrition and their consequence upon pupils and school performance. The majority of the surveys centered on how good diet and appropriate food consumption habits or their absence could improve or impair the overall health conditions as well as school achievements. Health education programs throughout education curriculum can partake in drawing public awareness in regards to impoverished diets and processed fast-food. The aforementioned are often considered responsible for causing chronic diseases endowed with characterized symptoms. The reason for the interest in the use of learning technologies that protect health in education is not to harm the physical and psychological health of learners in the process of training and education. After the creation of new types of innovative educational institutions, the knowledge load of learners increases, the increasing learning load can disrupt the normal development of students' central nervous system, vision, musculoskeletal system. This seriously harms the health of students. Only 5-15% of school leavers are healthy. To partially eliminate this problem, the project "Healthy Education-Healthy Nation" is being implemented in Azerbaijan to develop education. During the implementation of the project, its goals were expanded psycho-pedagogically in a local school. The goal was to develop students' thinking while maintaining their health. To achieve this goal, changes were made in the learning process: (1) The purpose of training was replaced by the purpose of learning; (2) Active training was replaced by constructive learning; (3) The structure of the knowledge of programs is based on a complete and fuzzy model; and (4) Tasks that ensure the operational development of student thinking, price criteria were created to measure the level of development. This study proposal will provide a theoretical framework based on persuasive communication theories for educators seeking to make their curriculum more gender inclusive for contemporary school settings. The authors argue that too many U.S. public schools lack educational materials for young students in health classes about the value of understanding and respecting gender diversity and all individuals on the gender spectrum (i.e., nonbinary gender, gender fluid, transgender, cisgender, agender, etc.). On the whole, a majority of educators may agree that health/sex education classes in both elementary and middle schools should require some gender diversity instruction, since it could conceivably be one of the most important ways that these institutions can help students to establish early on positive relationships with their own bodies and healthy, constructive attitudes towards their peers' self-identifications. Yet, the reality is that very few states require institutions to provide this type of health-related information beyond the standard binary gender anatomy, physiology, and reproductive history (Leins, 2019; Laslett, 1989). Therefore, this communication-based proposal is focused on the twin goals of awareness and implementation of age-appropriate course materials for educators working with children in the 5-7 age range on topics surrounding a greater understanding and respect for gender diversity in oneself and others. A process model approach that reaches these young learners before they form strict binary gender views and stereotypes can help educators working with vulnerable school-aged children in the gender minority (Cross & Madson, 1997). Relevant qualitative theories include Weinstein and Sandman's Precaution Adoption Process Model, McGuire's Persuasive Communication Model, and Bertalanffy's System Theory (Schiavo, 2014; Bertalanffy, 2015). In today's educational and workforce settings, the desire is for students to not only have "book knowledge" but also the ability to implement that knowledge into skills and abilities. Those desires are often met with decreasing time and money in order to help foster those knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA). Experimental Learning is a critical learning step to bridge that gap. In high-stakes settings, like healthcare and military education, where non-traditional learners are often found, experimental learning can help build the confidence and KSAs, ensuring skills and knowledge acquisition and retention in non-traditional adult learners. The continuous measurement of learning behavior or learning outcome by appropriate sensors is fundamental for the implementation of technology-based adaptive learning courses. An adaptive system needs such learning data to adapt the instruction to the needs of students. Depending on the learning objective, the sensors use information generated within tasks as basis for instructional adaptation, such as closed clear answers to learning tasks or more ambiguous open answers. In the second case, the use of self-evaluation concepts is one possibility. However, the automation and corresponding generation of learning data for adaptive systems is difficult because the answers are not clearly correct or incorrect. In a preliminary study we constructed a corresponding self-evaluation scaffold in the context of a Blended-Learning course in health psychology with 60 adult students. The goal of the study was to analyze if self-evaluation delivers valid data for sensors of an intended adaptive learning system, and what influences the accuracy of the self-evaluation. Therefore, we conducted an external evaluation of the students' answers. The correlation of the self-evaluation with the external evaluation was moderate (r=0.50; p < 0.001), and there was a large overlap of 65.9% between self- and external evaluation. The difference between self-evaluation and external evaluation can partly be explained by the task and subtask used, the difficulty of the task and the quality of the answers. In this respect, these results provide us with initial insights into what must be taken into account when designing corresponding sensors with an open response format. The analyses have also encouraged the development of a technology-based adaptive course on the basis of corresponding sensors. [For the complete proceedings, see ED600498.]

The automatic evaluation of text-based assessment items, such as short answers or essays, is an open and important research challenge. In this paper, we compare several features for the classification of short open-ended responses to questions related to a large first-year health sciences course. These features include a) traditional n-gram models; b) entity URIs (Uniform Resource Identifier) and c) entity mentions extracted using a semantic annotation API; d) entity mention embeddings based on GloVe, and e) entity URI embeddings extracted from Wikipedia. These features are used in combination with classification algorithms to discriminate correct answers from incorrect ones. Our results show that, on average, n-gram features performed the best in terms of precision and entity mentions in terms of f1-score. Similarly, in terms of accuracy, entity mentions and n-gram features performed the best. Finally, features based on dense vector representations such as entity embeddings and mention embeddings obtained the best f1-score for predicting correct answers. The paper substantiates the position that education and modern society, a 'society' in change because of present day developments in all the different sectors at local as well as national and international levels, are mutually dependent on each other. A modern national society expects its education system to provide in its differentiated education needs for their members to function effectively both in society and the international world. To effect this, society should, through the synchronizing participation of the coordinator, guide their education system according to the basic philosophy of education and should also formulate and prioritize their education needs. In addition, society should provide sufficient funding for providing for their education needs. The education system should apply its professional competencies to organize and strengthen the components and elements of that system in such a manner that the education needs can be provided for. Internet-based learning is increasingly applied in medical education, but its effect in the field of public health training is still unclear. This meta-analysis was undertaken to explore the impact of Internet-based learning on students'/professionals' knowledge of public health compared with no intervention and with traditional face-to-face (FTF) formats. Two reviewers independently searched Medline, Web of Science, ProQuest, Google scholar, ERIC and Elsevier databases for relevant studies between 1st January, 1990 and 30th December, 2016. Studies in English language providing information on educational outcomes after Internet-based training in public health courses compared with no-intervention or a pre-intervention assessment, or with FTF control group were retrieved, reviewed, and assessed according to the established inclusion/exclusion criteria in the current study. There were 16 eligible studies with 1183 participants in total. Heterogeneity in results was detected across studies. A random effects model was used to pool effect sizes for knowledge outcomes. The pooled effect size (standardized mean difference, SMD) in comparison to no intervention was 1.92 (95% CI: 1.05 to 2.78; P<0.0001), favoring Internet-based interventions. Compared with FTF formats, the pooled effect size was 0.39 (95% CI: -0.06 to 0.83; P = 0.09). The study suggested that Internet-based learning was superior to no-intervention in improving students'/professionals' public health knowledge. Traditional methods for diabetic education rely heavily on written materials and there is only a limited amount of resources targeted at educating diabetic children. Mobile games can be effective, evidence-based, and motivating tools for the promotion of children's health. In our earlier work, we proposed a novel approach for designing computer games aimed for educating children with diabetes and applied our design strategy to a mobile Android game (Mario Brothers). In this paper, we report the findings of a preliminary evaluation study (n = 12) conducted over 1 week. The initial results showed that the children found the game engaging and improved their knowledge of healthy diet and lifestyle. [For the complete proceedings, see ED579190.]

It is obvious that today's students are graduating into a world that is interconnected as never before and education for international understanding for global citizenship education (GCE) inspires action, partnerships, dialogue and cooperation through formal and non-formal education. It promotes an ethos of curiosity, solidarity and shared responsibility. The changing educational landscape in the global context and the increasing interconnectedness and interdependence of the world have placed unprecedented demands on mental health education programs in preparing people all around the globe to educate for twenty first century global citizenship. It is time to bring mental health into focus. Momentum is gaining in terms of raising awareness, mental and behavioural disorders are the source of enormous human suffering across the lifespan. The paper is an effort to find out the ways for the significance of global citizenship education for mental health development. It requires high level and long-term policy and resource commitment to the goal of "learning to live together" in the twenty first century. The vision of a new world picture must precede the creative acts and the detailed organization of new knowledge necessary for its realization.

An E-learning system based on a multi-agent (MAS) architecture combined with the Dynamic Content Manager (DCM) model of E-learning, is presented. We discuss the benefits of using such a multi-agent architecture. Finally, the MAS architecture is compared with a pure service-oriented architecture (SOA). This research described here examines the role of e-health and medical informatics through the lens of one e-health knowledge broker in Canada. Eating disorders are an important issue in Canadian health and it is difficult to find accurate information online. Theoretical models examined include those which describe the roles of health knowledge brokers, including those who advocate for critical social change. A case study is presented of one Canadian agency which brokers knowledge about eating disorders. This agency has a highly complex role which employs multiple technologies: telephone help lines, a website, and webinars. The help lines and email supports are designed to respond to questions about eating disorders and to refer individuals to service providers. When compared to the oft-cited role of the knowledge broker to disseminate research information, the key roles of this agency move beyond this, providing reliable and consistent information; brokering spaces for capacity-building; promoting crtical health literacy and advocating for health equity. This paper explores the use of a three dimensional virtual world (3-DVW) to delivery assertiveness training to young adolescents. The case study aims to understand how a sense of presence in VWs facilitates and affect the performance of students role-playing activities to enhance their ability to resist sexual coercion. This paper examines the application of quality, social justice/equality and accountability/responsibility of teaching and learning in an online educational environment. Components addressed in this paper include a brief inspection of online teaching and learning methods, qualities of online teaching and learning, and the responsibility of teaching and learning with virtual simulations. An appraisal of possible disparity between technology applications by institutes of higher learning and how to address concerns of inequality, in regards to utilization of distance education opportunities, will be discussed. Addressing issues of equality, responsibility and lifelong learning via distance education will be mentioned. Examples of one approach to address these concerns from a case study perspective will be provided. Replacing lecture-based learning content with online information can augment learner-content interaction and facilitate greater mastery over a subject. The success of online delivery will depend on the readiness of learners to use and accept technology as well as the readiness of the organizational infrastructure to support a learner-centric learning culture. Successful implementation and adoption of online learning can be indicated by technology acceptance. In this project, lecture-based learning content for a healthcare vocational training course in West Africa was replaced with e-learning and applied to learners who had little or no prior computer experience. E-learning content was combined with practical and peer-based pedagogy to provide a blended learning course. This paper describes the acceptance of technology-assisted learning during the project. This paper aims to discuss complexity as a key feature for understanding the role of science knowledge in environmental and health contexts--a central issue in Science|Environment|Health pedagogy. Complex systems are, in principle, not predictable. In different contexts, ephemeral mechanisms produce different, sometimes completely unexpected results. The art of decision-making in complex contexts is to take scientific knowledge into account but to interpret its meaning in terms of concrete complex contexts. This is illustrated by four empirical studies on Science|Environment|Health issues, presented midway through this paper. The findings underscore the importance of introducing complexity issues into science education. Not only are all the grand health and environmental challenges of our times highly complex, but there is also evidence that introducing complexity into science education may support many students' motivation to learn science and change practice in science classrooms. Truly appreciating the role of complexity in Science|Environment|Health pedagogy is likely to raise future citizens who understand the delicate relation between predictability and adaption and to empower them for wise decisions about societal and personal well-being. The 2007 Annual Meeting of the Association for Continuing Higher Education was themed "Refining Our Mission: Continuing Education's Role in Engagement, Outreach and Public Service." When studies are conducted over a period of time, the sample size typically decreases. In a study of the effects of exercise therapy and education with recovering congestive heart failure (CHF) patients (Brubaker, Witta, & Angelopoulus, 2003), the sample size decreased from over 40 to 9 participants after an 18-month time span. Although the quality of life (QOL) scales and measures of physical ability showed improvement, these results were limited to 9 participants. Thus, there was some question concerning the generalizability of this study to other patients with congestive heart failure. The purpose of this study was two-fold: (1) to use the bootstrapping procedure to provide the confidence intervals and estimate generalization error of both physical and quality of life results for that study, and (2) to estimate the probability of sample results as extreme as the observed sample using permutation methods. Most of the findings from this study support the findings from the original study and provide further evidence of the importance of the exercise and education treatment used in the original study. Further, this is not the only study in which improvement in physical measures and QOL constructs have shown improvement. Although the majority of studies on patients with CHF are less than six-months in duration, evidence has been provided that exercise tolerance and QOL can increase significantly following a supervised exercise program (Holst, Kaye, Richardson, Krum, Prior, Aggarwal, Wolfe, & Bergin, 2001; Quittan, Sturm,Wiesinger, Pacher, & Fialka-Moser, 1999; Tokmakova, Dobreva, & Kostianev, 1999).

Results of a joint meeting between national advisory councils in medicine and nursing on physician-nurse collaboration to enhance patient safety are reported. Recommendations on which participants reached consensus are organized by these Institute of Medicine (IOM) themes: establish a national focus to create leadership through research and protocols to enhance the knowledge base about safety; identify and learn from errors through immediate, strong mandatory reporting efforts; raise standards and expectations for improvements in safety; and create safety systems inside health care organizations through implementation of safe practices at the delivery level. This proceedings contains 35 reports, presentations, and workshop summaries from the fourth triennial World Indigenous People's Conference: Education, held in June 1996. The papers are organized around six broad headings: research papers and reports, tertiary program descriptions, teacher education, community initiatives, language, and health education. Two additional sections contain the Coolangata Statement--the conference's "declaration of indigenous people's education rights--and a complete set of workshop abstracts and presenter information. The presentations deal with a wide range of indigenous educational issues in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. They demonstrate that indigenous definition and control of the educational agenda has progressed on several fronts in all of the nations represented at the conference. A tidal wave of initiatives is under way, aimed at placing indigenous beliefs, values, knowledge systems, and ways of knowing into the educational arena at all levels. (Author/SV)

This booklet discusses the future directions of adult education in the field of population issues. Particular emphasis is on the continuing need to interpret the post-1994 Cairo conference paradigmatic shift, from a strictly demographic focus towards a new vision of development and gender rights. Section 1 discusses reproductive rights in the post-Cairo context and the key role adult education should play in providing women and men with the information about their options and in empowering them to make reproductive choices. Section 2 addresses how reproductive choices and information available will be conditioned by different cultural contexts and, in particular, by different belief systems. Section 3 stresses that the subject of sexuality should be treated as private and confidential in the adult learning context. Section 4 focuses on the relationship between men and women and emphasizes that women's empowerment is crucial. Section 5 considers AIDS education and how it is closely linked to issues of reproductive rights, women's empowerment, responsible sexuality, and adult learning. (YLB)

This booklet addresses the growing importance of health in adult learning and the interest in joint action. Section 1 describes the context, one in which substantial, but unevenly spread, progress has been made in improving global health. Section 2 examines the social aspects of health and explains how what is defined as health or sickness depends not only on individuals and biological factors but on the social and cultural environment within which individuals live, work, and interact. Section 3 defines health promotion, which builds on a social and cultural understanding of health and illness, as the process of enabling people to increase control over their health through advocacy and intersectoral action; health education as a component of health promotion; and community action as a key component of health promotion policies. Section 4 discusses the closeness between health education and adult learning as reflected in the similarity of goals and principles that characterize both contemporary adult education and health promotion policies. Section 5 focuses on health as a basic human right. Section 6 defines health literacy. Section 7 describes projects in Nepal, Germany, and Bolivia that illustrate the links between health and adult education. The five speeches in this collection all address issues concerned with freedom and responsibility in American education, especially higher education. The first speech, "Freedom, Coercion, and Authority" is by Robert N. Bellah. Bellah argues that freedom must be balanced not only by responsibility but by authority, and urges universities not to abandon their traditional role of producing educated human beings not technicians. The second speech is "Balancing Freedom and Responsibility with the New Market Forces" by Paul A. Elsner. Elsner focuses on challenges and issues faced by the community college sector. Third, Howard Fuller in "Reforming K-12 Education in America," focuses on the unsolved educational problems of poor children, especially poor children of color in urban areas and the relationship of colleges to these areas. The fourth speech is "Higher Education for the 21st Century" by the Honorable Richard W. Riley, U.S. Secretary of Education, who addresses such issues as the role of higher education in strengthening elementary and secondary schools, the need to increase diversity in higher education institutions, and the need for well-trained K-12 teachers. The last paper is "Preparing Our Children for College" by the Honorable Donna Shalala, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services. Shalala reviews some Clinton administration accomplishments in education and health and urges greater involvement by higher education in such health issues as tobacco and alcohol abuse. (DB)
