Created in 2002, Brazilian Court TV has become an important mechanism for access to legal information, covering matters from from academic debates to higher courts' decisions. Its existence has made possible live broadcasting of Supremo Tribunal Federal (Brazilian Supreme Court) and the Conselho Nacional de Justiça (National Council of Justice) sessions and trials, which has contributed to the development of online communications by other Brazilian courts. This has brought up a shy and incipient debate about its impact on the daily life of the courts. While some argue that such a practice improves transparency and accessibility in the judiciary system, others argue that too much visibility exposes differences and confrontations - sometimes harsh ones - among its members, weakening the respectability of their decisions. A consensus is therefore far from being reached within the debate on the relevance of the (live) broadcasting of the courts' sessions. Recently, its official arrival on YouTube has pushed further such dispute. The creation of the YouTube official channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/stf?blend=1&ob=4) of the Supremo Tribunal Federal was justified as a way to increase its visibility and to improve the communication process with society, all of which was demanded by the Judiciary's strategic planning. After all, the doubt remains: are we facing a new procedure that should provide greater transparency for the courts or does it only translate into a repaginated and spectacular way of implementing judicial work. This paper, which is the first product of a research in progress, takes Brazilian Court TV as an investigation object and proposes to examine it from an interdisciplinary perspective between Communications and Law, Media and Courts of Justice. Thus, it is intended, at first, to recover the trajectory of Brazilian Court TV in order to understand its possible impact on access to information. Secondly, it is also intended to understand the meaning of its expansion and the use that it has made of new technologies. Establishing a sense of the increasing judicial transparency obtained through TV and web broadcasting is, in conclusion, the intention of this text. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Transparency and effectiveness are emphasized as two positive consequences of the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the Courts. Indeed, ICT expanded the possibilities of access to information and judicial decisions, as well as its use especially in acts of distrainment, have given greater transparency and effectiveness to the judicial acts. In Brazil, federal, state and labor courts have web sites where judicial information is disclosed and their decisions are published. Moreover, they have agreements with the Federal Revenue Secretariat, the Central Bank and the National Register of Automobiles that allow them to implement all acts of distrainment. However, not all Courts are at the same stage as to the use of ICT because, on one hand, their web pages do not have all the features available and, on the other hand, their users are unable to explore the full potential offered by the new technologies. Delivering a diagnosis of the existing offer in the Courts' web sites and of the use of their agreements with other public services is the first task that is being proposed here. This paper intends to examine how such things are changing the judicial function and, in particular, the figure of the judge, in addition to contributing to a new insertion of the Judiciary in the society. The literature on negative workplace interactions, including interpersonal mistreatment, revenge and competition, largely focuses on the similarly-valenced (i.e., negative) experiences and outcomes of such interactions. In this symposium, we extend and advance current work by showcasing research that explores positive factors including resilience, empowerment, and positive behaviors. The first paper uses multi-source data from an organization and demonstrates that high mindfulness may help targeted employees be resilient to leader abuse. The second paper qualitatively explores ways in which individuals can empower themselves and proactively protect themselves from being mistreated by others. The third paper analyzes natural field data to show that revenge can be satisfying and performance-enhancing for individuals high in role power. The final paper uses survey data to demonstrate that competition between employees in the workplace can lead to positive outcomes of task performance and organizational citizenship behaviors. These papers, with their diverse methodologies and samples, shed new light on how lives can potentially be improved before and after negative workplace interactions. Tough Love or Just Tough? Four studies test the hypothesis that individuals who possess high power, but low status, are more likely to be recipients of negative interpersonal treatment in their relationships, in comparison to individuals with any other power-status combination. High power, low status targets are least likely to be trusted (Studies 1 and 2), most likely to be demeaned by others (Study 3) and least likely to have their advice heeded (Study 4). These consequences derive from the stereotype that high power, low status targets lack warmth. These findings highlight differences between two fundamental bases of social hierarchy, power and status, and also illustrate how relationships with high power, low status individuals may spiral downward into a reciprocal cycle of hostility.
