We present K-band observations of a sample of XRN/LMXB using NIRC on Keck I. For GlkO J0422+32, we show that the K-band flux is significantly contaminated by the accretion disk. We present K-band images of 4U 1630-47, Aql X-l, and GX 17+2, and we discuss the implications of the newly discovered IR/optical counterparts for the latter two systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

I present an overview of optical observations (mostly spectra) of Type II, Ib, and Ic supernovae (SNe). SNe II are defined by the presence of hydrogen, and exhibit a very wide variety of properties. SNe II-L tend to show evidence of late-time interaction with circumstellar material. SNe IIn are distinguished by relatively narrow emission lines with little or no P-Cygni absorption component and (quite often) slowly declining light curves; they probably have unusually dense circumstellar gas with which the ejecta interact. Some SNe IIn, however, might not be genuine SNe, but rather are “impostors”µspecifically, super-outbursts of luminous blue variables. SNe Ib do not exhibit the deep 6150 Å absorption characteristic of “classical” SNe Ia; instead, their early-time spectra have He I absorption lines. SNe Ic appear similar to SNe Ib, but lack the helium lines as well. Spectra of SNe IIb initially exhibit hydrogen, yet gradually evolve to resemble those of SNe Ib; their progenitors seem to contain only a low-mass skin of hydrogen. Spectropolarimetry thus far indicates large asymmetries in the ejecta of SNe IIn, but much smaller ones in SNe II-P. As one peers deeper into the ejecta of core-collapse SNe, the asymmetry (indicated by the amount of polarization) seems to increase. There is intriguing, but inconclusive, evidence that some peculiar SNe IIn might be associated with gamma-ray bursts. The rates of different kinds of SNe as a function of Hubble type are still relatively poorly known, although there are good prospects for future improvement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We review the use of Type Ia supernovae for cosmological distance determinations. Low-redshift SNe Ia (z ... 0.1) demonstrate that the Hubble expansion is linear, that H[sub 0] = 65 ± 2 (statistical) km s[sup -1] Mpc[sup -1], and that the properties of dust in other galaxies are similar to those of dust in the Milky Way. We find that the light curves of high-redshift (z = 0.3-1) SNe Ia are stretched in a manner consistent with the expansion of space; similarly, their spectra exhibit slower temporal evolution (by a factor of 1 + z) than those of nearby SNe Ia. The luminosity distances of our first set of 16 high-redshift SNe Ia are, on average, 10-15% farther than expected in a low massdensity (Ω[sub M] = 0.2) universe without a cosmological constant. Preliminary analysis of our second set of 9 SNe Ia is consistent with this. Our work supports models with positive cosmological constant and a current acceleration of the expansion. We address the main potential sources of systematic error; at present, none of them appears to reconcile the data with Ω[sub Lambda] = 0 and q[sub 0] ≤ 0. The dynamical age of the Universe is estimated to be 14.2 ± 1.7 Gyr, consistent with the ages of globular star clusters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The locations of supernovae in the local stellar and gaseous environment in galaxies contain important clues to their progenitor stars. Access to this information, however, has been hampered by the limited resolution achieved by ground-based observations. High spatial resolution Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images of galaxy fields in which supernovae had been observed can improve the situation considerably. We have examined the immediate environments of a few dozen supernovae using archival post-refurbishment HST images. Although our analysis is limited due to signal-to-noise ratio and filter bandpass considerations, the images allow us for the first time to resolve individual stars in, and to derive detailed color-magnitude diagrams for, several environments. We are able to place more rigorous constraints on the masses of these supernovae. A search was made for late-time emission from supernovae in the archival images, and for the progenitor stars in presupernova images of the host galaxies. In particular, we highlight the results for the Type II SN 1979C in M100. In addition, we have identified the progenitor of the Type IIn SN 1997bs in NGC 3627. We present results from a spectropolarimetric survey of young supernovae completed at the Keck Observatory, including at least one example from each of the major supernova types: Ia (1997dt), Ib (1998T, 1997dq), Ib/c-pec (1997ef), IIn (1997eg), and II-P (1997ds).
