Abstract

The culture of poverty and oppositional culture literatures assert that communities of concentrated poverty foster the formation of individual attitudes that stand in opposition to mainstream American attitudes of self-efficacy, individualism and optimism. If so, it is also plausible that communities of concentrated affluence foster distinctive attitudes. We test these assumptions using data from the 1990 General Social Survey, newly linked to 1990 Census data at the tract level. We find no evidence that individual values and beliefs are associated with neighborhood poverty or affluence. Mainstream American values are widely shared, even among persons living in the most economically marginal neighborhoods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
