Abstract

An overview of the recent results of Lower Hybrid (LH) experiments at JET with the ITER-like wall (ILW) is presented. Topics relevant to LH wave coupling are addressed as well as issues related to ILW and LH system protections. LH wave coupling was studied in conditions determined by ILW recycling and operational constraints. It was concluded that LH wave coupling was not significantly affected and the pre-ILW performance could be recovered after optimising the launcher position and local gas puffing. SOL density measurements were performed using a Li-beam diagnostic. Dependencies on the D2 injection rate from the dedicated gas valve, the LH power and the LH launcher position were analysed. SOL density modifications due to LH were modelled by the EDGE2D code assuming SOL heating by collisional dissipation of the LH wave and/or possible ExB drifts in the SOL. The simulations matched reasonably well the measured SOL profiles. Observations of arcs and hotspots with visible and IR cameras viewing the LH launcher are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The aim of driving a sufficient amount of plasma current with an appropriate radial current density profile is considered as one of the key challenges for a tokamak fusion power plant in steady state operation. Furthermore, efficient heating to enable transition to regime of enhanced confinement and to achieve breakeven plasma temperatures as well as MHD control and plasma breakdown assistance are required. In the framework of the EFDA Power Plant Physics and Technology (PPPT) activities, the ability of the Electron cyclotron (EC), Ion Cyclotron (IC) and Lower Hybrid (LH) systems to fulfil these requirements, was studied for a demonstration fusion power plant (DEMO). As boundary condition, a 1D description of the plasma for a pulsed DEMO based on system code studies combined with transport analysis was developed. The predicted 1D plasma parameters were used to calculate the current drive (CD) efficiency of each system and eventually optimised it. As an example, the EC current drive efficiency could be increased strongly by top launch compared to equatorial launch at least by a factor of two. For the IC system, two possible windows of operation for standard and higher frequencies were highlighted, whereby again top launch leads to higher CDefficiencies. The efficiencies predicted for DEMO for the RF current drive systems will be presented. Finally, gaps in the feasibility of RF systems under DEMO relevant conditions will be identified. Abstract

This paper reviews the status of lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) simulation and modeling. We first discuss modules used for wave propagation, absorption, and current drive with particular emphasis placed on comparing exact numerical solutions of the Fokker Planck equation in 2-D with solution methods that employ 1-D and adjoint approaches. We also survey model predictions for LHCD in past and present experiments showing detailed comparisons between simulated and observed current drive efficiencies and hard X-ray profiles. Abstract

An overview is presented of the results obtained on JET by the Heating and Current Drive Task Force (TF-H) in the period May 2000 - March 2001. A strongly improved Lower Hybrid (LH) coupling was achieved by optimising the plasma shape and by controlling the local edge density via the injection of CD[sub 4]. Up to 4 MW have been coupled in type III ELMy H-mode and/or on Internal Transport Barrier (ITB) plasmas with reflection coefficients as low as 4%. Long lasting quasi steady-state ITBs have been obtained by adding the LH current to the bootstrap and beam driven components. Furthermore the use of LH in the pre-heat phase results in electron temperature in excess of 10 keV, deep negative magnetic shear and strongly reduced power threshold for ITB formation. Preliminary results on ICRF coupling are reported including the effect of CD[sub 4] injection and the commissioning of the wide band matching system on ELMy plasmas. IC CD scenarios have been studied in H and ³He minority and used to modify the stability of the sawtooth to influence the formation of seed islands for the appearance of NTM. Up to 3 MW of IC power was coupled in the high magnetic field fast wave CD scenario. Preliminary MSE measurements indicate differences in the current profiles between -90° and +90° phasing. Careful measurements of the toroidal rotation, in plasmas heated by ICRF only show some dependence on the position of the resonance layer. Finally the use of ICRF minority heating under real-time control, in response to measured plasma parameters to simulate the effect of alpha particles, is presented. Abstract

Experiments on the effects of simultaneous injection of LH and ECH power have been carried out in FTU, with up to P[sub LH] = 1 MW and P[sub ECH] = 0.75 MW. In the absence of the cold ECH resonance in the plasma, the ECH power is absorbed on the suprathermal electron tail sustained by LHCD, as predicted theoretically, and causes the central electron temperature T[sub e0] to increase up to 1.2 keV. With the cold resonance at the centre, in a sawteeth and MHD free plasma, almost fully sustained by LHCD, a quasi-stationary electron transport barrier is built-up in a region r/a < 0.5. T[sub e0] rises by more than 4 keV, for only 0.35 MW of ECH power. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
