45. Exploring Teachers' Notions of Global Citizenship Education in the US-Mexico Border

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore the notions that teachers in the US-Mexican border have about global citizenship education; the specific research questions were: do these notions refer to an education that leads to action? Or to an active sense of citizenship? Do these notions contain a global scope? It was expected that living in the border, their daily exposition to an international experience would lead notions to a global perspective. Five teachers of normal schools were interviewed, and their notions were grouped into three main ideas: with the highest consensus there were values; second, normative life; and third, some aspects related to community life. Although some of the findings express notions of an active citizenship, there was nothing related to a global scope of citizenship. The explanation could be that their notions of citizenship are highly influenced by local concerns about insecurity, leaving aside a global perspective. 47. Teachers and Education for Global Citizenship in a Mexican University

Abstract

Since the turn of the century, universities have to cope with demands of internationalization; and more recently to cope as well with demands to educate for global citizenship, especially after the United Nations Secretary-General's Global Education First Initiative (GEFI) launched in September 2012. This paper reports an experience of training teachers to promote these aspects in a Mexican university. More precisely, to explore how far a group of university teachers, that were trained to promote internationalization, were from the main principles of global citizenship education. Their answers to a questionnaire specially designed for this purpose, were compared with the answers of a group of teachers, from the same university, who have not been trained in the mentioned matter. A test "U" of Mann-Whitney showed a significant difference between the two sets of answers, from which some reflections are derived and related actions are suggested for training university teachers. 48. Opportunities to Pose Problems Using Digital Technology in Problem Solving Environments

Abstract

This article reports and analyzes different types of problems that nine students in a Master's Program in Mathematics Education posed during a course on problem solving. What opportunities (affordances) can a dynamic geometry system (GeoGebra) offer to allow in-service and in-training teachers to formulate and solve problems, and what type of heuristics and strategies do they exhibit during this process? Results show that combining semi-structured problems with the use of GeoGebra can be useful in motivating and involving teachers in various episodes of problem formulation. In this context, important strategies included analyses of the variation in the attributes of figures using dynamic points and loci. [For complete proceedings, see ED581294.]
