Swift has now detected a large enough sample of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) to allow correlation studies of burst parameters. Such studies of earlier data sets have yielded important results leading to further understanding of burst parameters and classifications. This work focusses on seventeen Swift bursts that have also been detected either by Konus-Wind or HETE-II, providing high energy spectra and fits to Epeak . Eight of these bursts have spectroscopic redshifts and for others we can estimate redshifts using the variability/luminosity relationship. We can also compare Epeak with Eiso, and for those bursts for which a jet break was observed in the afterglow we can derive Eg and test the relationship between Epeak and Eγ . For all bursts we can derive durations and hardness ratios from the prompt emission. © 2006 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We propose an improved version of the redshift indicator developed by Atteia, which gets rid of the dependence on the burst duration and provides better estimates for high-redshift GRBs. We present first this redshift indicator, then its calibration with HETE-GRBs with known redshifts. We also provide an estimation of the redshift for 59 bursts, and we finally discuss the redshift distribution of HETE-bursts and the possible other applications of this redshift indicator. © 2006 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HETE-2 localized 63 flares from SGR1806-20 and 6 flares from SGR1900+14 in the summer periods from June 18 2001 through August 7 2005. We report on the temporal and spectral analyses of short flares from those SGRs. The estimation of T90 durations in 2–30 keV and 30–100 keV revealed that there is no difference between them with a few exceptions. For these exceptional short flares, there seems softening or possibly hardening during flares, but these spectral evolution are not common. We also found a good linear correlation between the rise and decay time, and they do not depend on a peak flux. We also found that the spectra are well reproduced by a sum of two blackbody models for all short flares. The temperatures are lying around 4 keV and 11 keV which are consistent with previous studies. They are not depend on either the magnitude of flare, the event morphology or the source. © 2006 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is claimed by many authors that there are tight correlations between the spectral peak energy Ep, and the “brightness” such as isotropic energy Erad, collimation-corrected energy Eγ, or peak luminosity Lp. In many long GRBs, their light curves consist of several pulses or humps, and each pulse has a different spectrum. Using data of multi pulsed GRBs observed by HETE-2, we investigated these relations for each pulse and found it looked to have some correlations. This may imply that each pulse could behave as a single burst. Considering that the GRB rate follow the star formation rate of the Universe, we should have already detected a number of distant GRBs. Some methods are proposed to estimate a redshift by applying the above mentioned correlations. Extending the previous studies, we apply the redshift estimations using Ep-Erad correlation for an individual pulse. © 2006 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the recent observation of the very high redshift burst source GRB 050904 made by the TAROT robotized telescope. We have compared our data with the SWIFT XRT light curve to analyze the broad ban spectrum. We show that the luminosity and the behavior of this event is comparable with that of GRB 990123, suggesting the existence of very bright events. They can be detected at very high redshifts, even with small or moderate aperture telescopes, and they may constitute a powerful means for the exploration of the young universe. An update of the last TAROT observations performed as a response from SWIFT alerts is made. © 2006 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the results from an extended monitoring of GRB 050525a taken minutes after the trigger time with the robotic telescope TAROT (Klotz et al. 2005) and more than one day later with the infrared camera WIRCam mounted on the 3.6-mt Canadian French Hawaii Telescope. A re-brightening feature was detected 33 minutes after the burst by TAROT. Together with GRB 021004 and GRB 050319, this is the third burst that shows an optical rebrightening in the rest-frame time interval of 0.01–0.02 days after the burst. We found no evidence of spectral variability before the re-brightening. The late times infrared data are nicely consistent with the expected power law decay with slope -1.6 derived from previous near infrared observations. © 2006 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since November 2004, we attempt to detect GRB optical afterglows in near real-time on images taken at the Canada France Hawaii Telescope within the Very Wide Survey, component of the CFHT Legacy survey. To do so, a Real Time Analysis System automatically and quickly analyzes MegaCAM images and extracts from them a list of photometrically and astrometrically variable objects which is then validated by a member of the collaboration. Each month, we repeatedly observe 15 to 30 square degrees down to magnitude i′ = 22.5. A few objects are classified as candidates and analyzed more deeply, and statistics are done showing the treatment’s performance. © 2006 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The availability of a few dozen GRB redshifts now allows studies of the intrinsic properties of these high energy transients. Amati et al. recently discovered a correlation between E peak, the intrinsic peak energy of the vfv spectrum, and Eiso, the isotropic equivalent energy radiated by the source. Lamb et al. have shown that HETE-2 data confirm and extend this correlation. We discuss here one of the consequences of this correlation: the existence of a ‘spectral standard candle’, which can be used to construct a simple redshift indicator for GRBs. © 2004 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During its >2.5 years of operation, the High Energy Transient Explorer (HETE-2) has detected nearly 300 GRBs, over 800 XRBs, and ∼50 bursts from SGRs in on-orbit operations and sophisticated ground searches of archived data. In addition to these bursts, there have been over 1500 other triggers detected using on-board or ground algorithms, hundreds of which are as yet unidentified and may come from cosmic sources. We have developed the HETE Burst Catalog as a means of organizing and analyzing the data from these nearly 3000 triggers in a systematic way. We present preliminary results from the HETE burst catalog. © 2004 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

FREGATE, the gamma-ray detector of HETE-2 is entirely dedicated to the study of GRBs. Its main characteristic is its broad energy range, from 7 keV to 400 keV. This energy range can be further extended down to 2 keV using the data from the WXM, the X-ray detector of HETE-2. Such a large energy range allows studies of the prompt emission of GRBs. determining with a high precision their spectral parameters. Moreover, because this energy range is at low energies, the sample of GRBs detected by both FREGATE and WXM contains a significant fraction of X-Ray Rich GRBs and X-Ray Flashes. We present here the distributions of the spectral parameters mesured for the time integrated spectra of 50 GRBs. We put emphasis on the distribution of the low energy spectral index α. Because FREGATE and WXM detected all classes of GRBs, we also discuss the connection between GRBs, X-Ray Rich GRBs and X-Ray Flashes. © 2004 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report HETE-2 WXM and FREGATE observations of two X-ray flashes (XRFs), XRF010213 and XRF020903. The signal is only seen in < 25 keV and < 10 keV for XRF010213 and XRF020903 respectively. Both events show a double-peak structure in their light curves. The durations of the bursts are > 10 seconds, and this feature is similar to that of the “long” GRBs. According to the time-averaged spectral analysis using both WXM and FREGATE data, the fluence ratio of 2–30 keV to 30–400 keV energy band is 11.4 and 5.6 for XRF010213 and XRF020903 respectively. The Epeak energy in the Band function is < 10 keV. They are likely to belong to the same class as the X-ray flash events detected with GINGA and BeppoSAX. In this paper, we will present the detail study of the prompt emission of XRF010213 and XRF020903, and compare with the characteristics of classic GRBs. © 2004 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a summary of the observations performed with the Télescope à Action Rapide pour les Objets Transitoires (TAROT — Rapid Action Telescope for Transient Objects) performed over the period 1999 – 2003. Seventeen GRB localization observations where performed shortly after the burst (10s – 90min.), and in at least one case, even while the source was still active in gamma-rays. During this period CGRO. HETE-2 and INTEGRAL were in operation. Though no alert was missed, no source was detected, to a magnitude limit between R = 15 and R = 20. Future plans are also presented, featuring the duplication of TAROT at ESO — La Silla. © 2004 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the in-flight calibration results of the detector response matrices of the X-ray instrument, Wide-field X-ray Monitor (WXM), on board the HETE-2 satellite. WXM consists of four one-dimensional position-sensitive proportional counters and two sets of one-dimensional coded aperture. Its energy range is 2–25 keV. The detector response matrix (DRM) of WXM is calculated numerically using the ground measurements for each anode wire. It is then calibrated with the observation of the Crab nebula in December 2001 and January 2002. The spectral parameters and the normalization of the spectra are investigated at various incident angles, and compared with the known values in literature. With the current DRM, the derived spectral parameters are mostly consistent with the values in literature, expect for 10–20% uncertainty in normalization for individual anode wires, and at large incidence angles. © 2004 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

GAMMA ray bursts ,GAMMA ray astronomy - Abstract
The High Energy Transient Explorer (HETE) mission is devoted to the study of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) using soft X-ray, medium X-ray, and gamma-ray instruments mounted on a compact spacecraft. The METE satellite was launched into equatorial orbit on 9 October 2000. A science team from France, Japan, Brazil, India, Italy, and the US is responsible for the METE mission, which was completed for ∼ 1/3 the cost of a NASA Small Explorer (SMEX). The METE mission is unique in that it is entirely "self-contained," insofar as it relies upon dedicated tracking, data acquisition, mission operations, and data analysis facilities run by members of its international Science Team. A powerful feature of METE is its potential for localizing GRBs within seconds of the trigger with good precision (∼ 10') using medium energy X-rays and, for a subset of bright GRBs, improving the localization to ∼ 30' accuracy using low energy X-rays. Real-time GRB localizations are transmitted to ground observers within seconds via a dedicated network of 14 automated "Burst Alert Stations," thereby allowing prompt optical, IR, and radio follow-up, leading to the identification of counterparts for a large fraction of METE -localized GRBs. METE is the only satellite that can provide near-real time localizations of GRBs, and that can localize GRBs that do not have X-ray, optical, and radio afterglows, during the next two years. These capabilities are the key to allowing METE to probe further the unique physics that produces the brightest known photon sources in the universe. To date (December 2002), HETE has produced 31 GRB localizations. Localization accuracies are routinely in the 4'-20' range; for the five GRBs with SXC localization, accuracies are ∼1-2'. In addition, METE has detected ∼ 25 bursts from soft gamma repeaters (SGRs), and >600 X-ray bursts (XRBs). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The FREGATE gamma ray detector of HETE-2 is sensitive to photons between 6 and 400 keV. This sensitivity range, extended towards low energies, allows us to explore the emission of GRBs in hard X-rays. We fit the spectra of 23 GRBs with Band's spectral function in order to derive the distribution of their peak energies (E-peak). This distribution is then compared with the E-peak distributions measured by BATSE and GINGA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

GAMMA ray bursts ,GAMMA ray astronomy - Abstract
After a long period of quiescence, the soft gamma repeater SGR1900+14 was suddenly reactivated on April 2001. On July 2[sup nd] 2001, a bright flare emitted by this source triggerred the WXM and FREGATE instruments onboard the HETE-2 satellite. Unlike typical short (∼ 0.1 s) and spiky SGRs recurrent bursts, this event features a 4.1 s long main peak, with a sharp rise (∼ 50 ms) and a slower cutoff (∼ 250 ms). This main peak is followed by a ∼ 2 sec decreasing tail. We found no evidence of any precursor or any extended 'afterglow' tail to this burst. We present the preliminary spectral fits of the total emission of this flare as observed by the FREGATE instrument between 7 and 150 keV. The best fit is obtained with a model consisting of two blackbody components of temperatures 4.15 kev and 10.4 keV. A thermal bremsstrahlung can not be fitted to this spectrum. We compare these features and the burst energetics with the other strong or giant flares from SGR1900+14. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

GAMMA ray bursts ,TELESCOPE maintenance & repair - Abstract
TAROT-1 has been operating routinely since July 1999. During that time 6 alerts have been observed in good weather conditions, leading to limits in magnitude of about R=14 to 17 for the early afterglow of the gamma-ray burst sources. Future prospects include the replacement of the present camera by a more sensitive one, a larger field of view, and an improved readout time. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
