- Abstract
A conference was held by the University of New South Wales, Australia, to enable staff and students to examine the purposes of student assessment, implications of various forms of assessment, and ways in which assessment might be most effectively conducted. Eric Daniels spoke on the jury system of assessment in architecture, Raja Bandaranayake spoke on the need for a rational and analytical approach to the planning of assessment, and Dixie Coulton spoke on student participation in the assessment process. Study groups considered the following areas: grading/assessment, continuous assessment, assessment as feedback to students and staff, student participation in assessment, and assessment of class participation. Workshop reports presented are: "Diagnostic and Other Feedback Based on Exam Analysis," by Max Dunstan; "Assessment of Laboratory Work," by Ian Sefton; "Assessment in Pre-Service Teacher Education Programmes," by Lee Owens and David Smith; "Essay Marking," by Stan Ross; "How to Organise a Course without Grading," by Dave Boud; "Selecting Appropriate Assessment Methods for a Course," by Jackie Lublin; and "Criterion-Referenced Assessment," by Michael Bailey. A bibliography, rules of the law school on the use of the writings of others and plagiarism, and a paper on teaching the writing of academic papers by Peter Bamford are appended. (SW)
