This book presents a selection of papers from the annual, international, interdisciplinary conference of the World Association for Case Method Research & Application. Papers are categorized into six areas: (1) "Case Studies and Research" (e.g., subjectivity as a source of insight in case study research, evolution of a teaching case, and preserving the individual case in behavioral research); (2) "Innovative Resources and Case Method Teaching" (e.g., mentoring in the academy, managing diversity in colleges of agriculture, and accountability cases); (3) "Web-based Projects and On-Line Learning" (e.g., teaching and learning online, online instruction via a dynamic roving community, and distance education in business schools); (4) "Case Writing and Use in Various Settings" (e.g., developing gender-based cases, cases from the theory of inverse problems in mathematics, and the power of questions in second language case discussions); (5) "Various Case Method Applications" (e.g., total quality management in education, options for describing individuals in cases, and making simple but effective presentations); and (6) "International Case Studies" (e.g., the event as a case study, better preparation for case discussion using Internet tools, and accounting for intangible assets in partnerships). In September 1984, the Chinese government asked the Economic Development Institute of the World Bank to assist the officials of the Chinese Ministry of Education in thinking through some policy options for examinations and standardized testing. This document summarizes the descriptions of testing programs and advice provided to these Chinese officials at a meeting held in April 1985. In addition to an introduction by S. P. Heyneman and I. Four papers on biological and medical sciences libraries were presented at the 1986 International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) conference. "Activities and Services of Medical Libraries in Japan--Past, Present, and Future" (Kazuo Urata and Toshinobu Suga, Japan) discusses the inauguration of the Japan Medical Library Association (JMLA), the present situation of Japanese medical libraries, bibliographic control of medical literature, international cooperation, and future themes. In "The Status and Development of Biomedical Libraries in China," Daxun He of China traces the history of medical libraries in China, presents statistics on the current state of Chinese medical libraries, and discusses the provision of information services. In "Current Developments in Medical Bibliography in Australia," Sandra Henderson of Australia describes major projects of the National Library of Australia and the Australian Department of Health that have increased the scope and availability of bibliographic resources in that country. Finally, "Union Lists of Serials" (Erika Love, United States), a syllabus prepared for an IFLA Section of Biological and Medical Sciences Libraries workshop, describes the purpose, uses, and benefits of union lists of serials, and provides an introduction to the basics of union list planning and project implementation. An appendix includes a glossary of technical terms; a bibliography of articles, guidelines and standards, and related readings; and sample forms. (KM)

This study aimed to reveal general landscape of research on teacher resilience, employing descriptive and bibliometric analyses. Descriptive analyses were performed utilizing Web of Science's internal system, while bibliometric analyses were executed through the VOSviewer program. Web of Science Core Collection was used as a data source. Citation analyses of publications, authors, and journals, as well as co-authorship, co-citation, and common word analyses were conducted. The research reveals a timeline of publications, indicating a notable surge in 2006, and a substantial increase in 2021. The countries with the highest number of publications on teacher resilience, in descending order, are the United States of America (USA), Australia, the United Kingdom (UK), and the People's Republic of China (PRC), according to the research findings. Authors such as Gu, C. Day, S. Beltman, C. Mansfield, and A. Price emerged from the citation analysis. Based on the results from the co-citation analysis, C. Day and Q. Gu were identified as the most frequently co-cited authors. The co-occurrence analysis of keywords highlighted key terms like resilience, teacher education, early career teachers, teacher candidates, professional learning, school leadership, and COVID-19. The findings were contextualized within the existing literature, leading to recommendations for future research. Augmented reality (AR), a cutting-edge technology, has the potential to change the way students learn by superimposing virtual items and information onto the real environment. Through more immersive and interesting interactions with digital content, AR might help students better understand difficult concepts and boost their drive to learn. As a result of its contribution to student learning, AR has become increasingly appealing to educational researchers. This study aimed to descriptively explore the characteristics of AR studies in education and to qualitatively analyze the most influential ones indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) between 2000 and 2022. A scoping review was conducted to determine the sample of the AR studies in education based on the inclusion criteria. Accordingly, descriptive analyses were conducted to identify the characteristics of the AR studies in education between 2000 and 2022 in terms of publication year, country, affiliations, journals, funding agencies, and citation trends. Then, the research methodologies and implications were found among the most influential AR studies in education between 2000 and 2022 by synthesizing qualitatively. The overall results indicated that AR studies in education have been conducted since 2008, with an increasing number of studies over time. Based on the implications of the most influential studies identified in terms of citation numbers, it was detected that AR has the potential to enhance education and training by providing interactive and engaging environments, linking real-world contexts with digital resources, and promoting efficiency and effectiveness in learning. The transition between arithmetic and algebraic thinking is challenging for students. One notable difficulty for students is understanding algebraic symbols--pronumerals. Researchers are exploring pedagogical approaches in seeking to address this issue. The current paper is contributing to this body of literature by illustrating how an online card matching game-based learning activity supports students' understanding of pronumerals.

In recent years an increasing number of Chinese international students have made a decision to attend regional Australian universities rather than following the large city tendency. However, so far little attention has been paid to this trend. This paper proposes a holistic theoretical framework to interpret Chinese students' decision-making in choosing regional Australian higher education. Inspired by the Engel-Kollat-Blackwell (EKB) model, according to which choices, factors and process are main components in people's decision-making, this paper combines the following three theoretical approaches. Firstly, in cognitive perspective, six choices relating to Australian higher education made by international students (Duan, 1997) provide a theoretical basis to explain core choices of Chinese students about regional Australian higher education. Secondly, using migration theory, Mazzarol and Soutar's push-pull model (2002) refers to factors influencing Chinese students' decision-making of regional Australian higher education. Thirdly, again in terms of cognitive perspective, three classic decision-making process models (Lawley (1993), Duan (1997), and Pimpa (2002)) offer an additional insight to analyze Chinese international students' decision-making process. By integrating these three approaches, the framework develops a multidimensional and systematic theoretical comprehension of Chinese international students' decision-making in selecting regional Australian higher education.

This paper reports on an investigation of the student interaction and group development of a four-student group during collaborative mathematics problem solving. Video and written transcript of the group interaction were analysed. The group problem solving has been described by the flow of negotiative events in terms of topics discussed within the group. Positioning theory framed four interaction positions which described student interaction. A mutual relationship between the two has been identified in this case. Implications for collaborative problem solving are discussed.

This paper challenges the prevailing understandings of homogenous Chineseness in the context of children's mathematics learning in Sydney. Recent research which examines the influence of culture on student's mathematics performance tends to see Chinese as one homogenous group. Research data collected from six Chinese families living in Sydney, however, suggests a contradictory view on Chineseness. Through the use of narrative inquiry as storytelling of lived experiences, it was found that families have different interpretations of Chineseness and hence, different representations of their identities. Their hybrid identities shift over time and in different social situations. While they see mathematics as important for their children's future, there do not seem to be clear links between their perceptions of identities and their children's mathematics learning in Australia. Data gathered in the interviews with the six families were first analysed with themes derived from the literature on identity and Chinese students' performance in mathematics before they were written in the form of narratives. Interpreting data with different analysis crystallises the experiences of the participants. This paper also provides some insights into how the researcher's own narrative can provide a special lens in the interpretation of that of the participants' in an ethnographic study.

Autoethnography is adopted as the procedure and orientation for this PhD study which aims to explore the cultural identity of the Chinese families and its influences on their children's mathematics learning. The purpose of this paper is two-fold. First, readers are invited to travel with the researcher a journey in which she explores her diasporic identity by engaging in the stories of others. This will be done by examining how her understanding of her own Chinese identity was challenged by those of the participants in the interviews. Second, through her experience and reflections, readers are provided with an insider's lens to understand some of the data collected in the interviews. Data are collected through interviews, journals, observations and fieldwork memos. As an autoethnographic study, it is not the aim of this thesis to provide a generalization of data. Rather, rich data sets which are partially contrastive and partially congruent to one another challenged the homogeneity of Chineseness. This paper discusses how the researcher uses her dual positionality to explore blurred boundaries between the observer and the observed, insider and outsider. It highlights how self is an important instrument in both the collection and analysis of data.

This paper showcases a culturally sensitive mixed method research approach used to evaluate aspects of an international executive education program. The multi-million dollar program was delivered in Australia over a ten-year period to middle and senior managers from the Chinese up-stream oil and gas sector. The executive education program was a non-award but MBA level program that explored aspects of leading and managing within the Chinese oil and gas sector. Fundamentally, the study consisted of a quantitative survey followed by a focus group to investigate four aspects of the interest to the researchers: the participants perceptions of the effectiveness of the program; aspects of social capital support; industry-based human capital; and, the participants opinions about Chinese energy policy. The program was delivered in Australia over a ten-year period and during this time the Program Managers had provided formative and summative reports on each of the six- or three-month courses. This information along with anecdotal information from the Program Director provided an excellent starting point for the survey. Participants were asked to comment on four key areas of interest to the researchers including: their opinion of the effectiveness of the program; aspects of social capital support; industry-based human capital; and, their opinions about Chinese energy policy. An exploratory sequential mixed methods research design (Creswell and Plano Clark 2007) was employed. This paper focuses not on the responses of the participants but rather on the culturally sensitive, mixed-method approach that was adopted to the gather the data. In summary, we conducted an on-line survey and facilitated a focus group. However, we were conscious of the need to adapt our data gathering methods to ensure maximum responses that were insightful and robust. The advent of Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs) has led to the availability of large educational datasets collected from diverse international audiences. Little work has been done on the impact of cultural and geographic factors on student performance in MOOCs. In this paper, we analyze national and cultural differences in students' performance in a large-scale MOOC. We situate our analysis in the context of existing theoretical frameworks for cultural analysis. We focus on three dimensions of learner behavior: course activity profiles; quiz activity profiles; and most connected forum peer or "best friends." We conclude that countries or associated cultural clusters are associated with differences in all three dimensions. These findings stress the need for more research on the internationalization in online education and greater intercultural awareness among MOOC designers.

The study obtained cross-cultural measures of quality of life (QOL), based upon perceptions of individuals with mental retardation/developmental disabilities (MR/DD) of their degree of satisfaction, productivity, independence, and community integration. The Quality of Life Questionnaire was administered to 92 persons in MR/DD programs in Australia, the Federal Republic of Germany, Israel, and the Republic of China and 552 persons from MR/DD programs in Nebraska and Colorado. A very consistent trend was found across the five countries: quality of life scores increase as one lives and works in more normalized environments. The paper also outlines characteristics of mental retardation/developmental disabilities services in the four countries (excluding the United States), focusing on: public laws regarding services to persons with MR/DD, funding patterns, administrative structures for MR/DD services, current living options, and current employment options. The paper notes that the concept of quality of life in habilitation services can be used cross-culturally to foster international QOL-oriented public policy, implement QOL-oriented program practices, and complete QOL-focused cross- cultural research projects. The Gender and Sexuality in Mathematics Education Working Group convened in 2018 with a focus on (1) language use, multidimensional understandings of gender and sexuality, and influences of these on methods, results, and interpretations; (2) interactions between gender/sexuality and students' self-perceptions; and (3) the roles of curriculum, pedagogy, and teacher education in students' experiences of gender and sexuality. The 2019 Working Group will continue with these foci, but with an added dimension of learning through examination of work in gender and sexuality in mathematics education across the world, including country/culture-specific studies, and cross-cultural studies. The rapid global market integration diminishes potential diversification benefits from investing into the equities of different countries. Industry sector diversification is recognized as an efficient risk management technique for domestic portfolios as cross country diversification was not sufficient. This study provides a comparison of benefits from diversification for an investor with a consideration of industry sectors and finds if industry sector selection will enhance benefits of diversification in their domestic portfolios. Study extends Gupta and Basu (2011) study who compare industry sector diversification with in Australian and Indian stock markets using Asymmetric DCC GARCH model for estimation of time varying correlations and retest the sectoral allocation effect in China's stock market. Study makes important contribution by applying Asymmetric DCC GARCH model to estimate correlations between sector indices and measuring the diversification benefits from sector indices of emerging markets in a dynamic process that are more realistic within the changing global financial environment. Higher education has been deeply involved in the process of globalisation and has experienced consequent changes. In order to successfully operate in the globalised higher education landscape, universities worldwide continue to foster a commitment to internationalisation. As internationalisation has become a central concern of universities, more sophisticated information and useful tools are needed to help with mapping and measuring the phenomenon. This article examines how internationalisation is being measured in different universities in Australia and China. Through in-depth interviews with university leaders and head of office, the study presents an analysis of the current practice in 15 selected universities in relation to measuring the degree of internationalisation. The findings of the study shed light on the importance of the assessment of internationalisation as well as the obstacles impeding the development of effective measures for it.

The Commission on International Adult Education (CIAE) of the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education (AAACE) provides a forum for the discussion of international issues related to adult education in general, as well as adult education in various countries around the globe. The following purposes summarize the work of the Commission: (1) To develop linkages with adult education associations in other countries; (2) To encourage exchanges between AAACE and associations from other countries; (3) To invite conference participation and presentations by interested adult educators around the world; and (4) To discuss how adult educators from AAACE and other nations may cooperate on projects of mutual interest and benefit to those served. This study examined the psychometric characteristics of a 62-item parenting questionnaire completed by parents from the United States, Australia, China, and Russia. Factor analyses yielded three global parenting dimensions for each culture which were consistent with D. Baumrind's (1971) authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive typologies. The global parenting dimensions were subsequently analyzed to assess their internal structures. For each of the three global dimensions, a number of specific parenting practice factors were identified and compared cross-culturally. The internal factors for the authoritative style were: (1) warmth and involvement; (2) reasoning/induction; (3) democratic participation; and (4) good natured/easy going. The factors for the authoritarian style were: (1) verbal hostility; (2) corporal punishment; (3) non-reasoning, punitive strategies; and (4) directiveness. The factors for the permissive style were: (1) follow through; (2) ignoring misbehavior; (3) and self-confidence. Quite similar parenting practice factors were found for authoritative parenting across cultures; for authoritarian and permissive styles there were substantial cross-cultural differences among the specific parenting practices. Factor scores of the global parenting styles and specific practices were correlated with preschool behavioral problem outcomes to assess the validity of the instrument's cross-cultural use. For the United States and Australian families, mother and father authoritativeness and authoritarianism were related to child preschool behavioral problem outcomes. (KDFB)

As is shown in the paper, Russia and its Far Eastern region (RFE) possess large amounts of mineral wealth, comparable to that of China, USA, Australia, Canada and other major mineral producing countries. The same can be said with respect to the production of mineral commodities, including highly valuable ones. Unfortunately, country's and region's mineral potentials are insufficiently geologically explored and are not used to their full capacity. Presumably, the situation can be substantially corrected in positive direction by attracting foreign and transnational capitals and expertise, both on intrastate and transboarder bases. This study compares the regulations and practices of cross media ownership in Australia, Hong Kong, and Singapore, utilizing a conceptual framework to explore triangular relationships between the government, service providers and. Government regulatory policies are then analyzed in the context of recent technological trends pushing media convergence. Study findings suggest that market size does not affect policy-making and that private ownership is the key determinant of policy outcomes.
