To examine effects of plate size on meals, I developed a method I label plate mapping. To validate plate mapping, a quasi-experimental between participants study was conducted that asked university students to accurately draw their lunch meal. Participants were randomized into groups where they were asked either pre-consumption or post-consumption to draw their lunch on either a 9″ or 11″ paper plate. Coding plate drawings for total meal size revealed that students drew bigger meals on larger plates and participant meal size drawings were more accurate when the plate provided was the same size as the meal plate used. Gender moderated meal size drawings, with women generally drawing meals that were more highly correlated and similarly sized to actual meals when compared to the drawings of men. Overall, the size of plate drawings was highly correlated with the size of actual foods, which provides support for the validity of the method of plate mapping. These findings suggest that plate mapping can be applied to estimate meal size and assess sensitivity to plate size. Gaining a better understanding of the mechanisms and processes that influence food consumption habits can help increase awareness of these cues for both academics as well as for consumers of food and benefit short- and long-term health goals. Background and objectives As a result of their involvement in a campus health fair, the authors of this paper became interested in the extent to which other academic libraries were engaged in health information outreach ( HIO). The authors present the results of a nationwide survey they conducted in 2010 and share a specific example of HIO at their own institution. Methods The authors conducted an online survey of approximately 1700 U. S. general academic and academic health science libraries with the objective to create a broad picture of HIO activity and its context within patron information-seeking behavior. Results The survey yielded a 21% response rate. Nearly 55% of all respondents indicated that their libraries did not participate in HIO, while 37% indicated that they did. Other responses yielded information on patron usage patterns concerning health information, specific types of HIO that libraries are involved in, and barriers to library involvement in HIO. Conclusions As libraries' traditional roles and information delivery methods evolve, librarians must do more to provide services that are relevant and accessible to users. Even as virtual services become more commonplace, librarians involved in HIO should consider also increasing their visibility by collaborating with others on campus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Internet and the World Wide Web have influenced the new approaches taken in teaching and learning at institutions of higher learning. The nature of the courses offered, the geographical spread of the teaching sites as well as the diverse and distributed student population are the catalysts for the changes. These non-traditional, or distant learners, have emerged as a significant subset of the student population, however, they are usually at a disadvantage because they do not have access to the information experts who would be able to assist them with their reference and research queries. Many libraries have adapted innovative e-reference services in the mainstream of their operations to bridge this divide. In 2009 the author received the 2008 Fulbright Visiting Researcher Scholar Fellowship and explored the theme “Digital Reference Services—Trends, Use and Implications for Academic Libraries in Jamaica.” The author was based at Syracuse University from September to November 2008, and visited other libraries such as the Ohio State University and the University of Illinois in the United States of America. This paper seeks to provide an overview of the research project that was undertaken. The findings presented are based on review of academic discourses through literature, interviews and observation. The article discusses the highlights of the 87th Annual Meeting of the Midwestern Psychological Association (MPA) which was held on April 30 - May 2, 2015 at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago, Illinois. Twenty-one psychologists were designated as 2015 MPA Fellows and graduate students were recognized for best student papers. John B. Pryor gave the 2015 MPA presidential address. Other speakers include Roy F. Baumeister, Charles S. Carver and Nora S. Newcombe.

This article presents abstracts of various papers related to teaching animal science to undergraduates and graduates, that were presented during the symposium held on July 26, 2005, Cincinnati, Ohio, which was organized by the American Dairy Science Association, the American Society of Animal Science and the Canadian Society of Animal Science. One of the papers presented is "Determining Graduation Rate of Students Who Initially Enrolled As Animal Science Majors at the University of Missouri During a Consecutive Four-Year Period," by G. Jesse and M. Ellersieck. Data obtained primarily from the University of Missouri's Student Information System were used to determine graduation rate of students who initially enrolled as animal science majors as freshmen or transfer students during the fall semester of 1996, 1997, 1998 or 1999. Another paper discussed is "Perceptions of High School Students Towards Advanced Life Science: Animals, Academic Honors Curricula," by A. Huerta, B. Hains and M. Balschweid. The objective of this study was to evaluate high school students' perceptions, opinions, and perceived benefits gained towards a new academically rigorous animal science curriculum.

The article presents a message from the Student Involvement Chair of the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality for 2005-2007. The winners of the student paper award for 2008 were Clinton Colaco and Andrew Porter. According to the author, the students also gave him some excellent feedback about the conference and suggestions for services they would like SSSS to provide to students. The Midcontinent/Eastern Region's meeting is in Cleveland, Ohio in May and the deadline for submission is January 31, 2008.
