(IS) requires that the security concerns should be properly articulated well ahead in early requirement engineering (RE) along with other functional and non-functional requirements. In this paper, based on the domain model for IS security risk management (SRM) we propose a set of transformation guidelines to translate Secure Tropos models to the misuse case diagrams. We believe that such a model translation would help developers to elicit real security needs by integrating the security analysis starting from early requirement stages to all the stages of development process. This research explored the demographic characteristics of the engineering faculty who offer and mentor Learning Through Service (LTS) experiences. Research has found a burgeoning interest in service; i.e., helping people, among engineering students, and it is important to understand how engineering faculty will help foster this desire and assist in retaining these students in engineering. The research explored how the number and type of engineering faculty who are active in LTS activities has changed over time. The research utilized a data mining approach, characterizing faculty active in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) around engineering education via the authors of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Annual Conference papers. Author-supplied biographical information in the papers and online research was used to identify the demographic characteristics of interest, including rank, disciplines, institutional affiliations, and gender. The results identified over 500 unique engineering faculty who have authored papers on LTS at the ASEE annual conference from 1996 to 2014; the rate of new faculty joining the ranks of authors of LTS papers averaged 41 per year from 2003 to 2013. The ranks of these authors averaged 23% assistant professors, 33% associate professors, and 32% full professors. The percentage of non-tenured/tenure track (non-T/TT) engineering faculty among the authors of LTS papers increased from none in 1996-1999 to 23% in 2014. Compared to the disciplines of engineering faculty nationally, engineering faculty authoring LTS papers are over-represented in civil/environmental engineering, industrial engineering, and mechanical engineering, and under-represented in chemical, electrical and computer engineering. The percentage of women among the authors of engineering LTS papers generally increased from 2001 to 2014. The authors of LTS papers were 20% women in 2001 and this increased to 50% in 2014; this includes co-authors who are students, staff, and non- engineering faculty. The engineering faculty authors of LTS papers were 15% women in 2001; this percentage increased to 39% in 2014. This is much higher than the percentage of women among engineering faculty (14% in 2013) and ASEE members (24% in 2013). Further, the engineering faculty authors of LTS papers represented 175 unique institutions; these were 36% Baccalaureate or Master's institutions and 26% research universities with very high activity (Carnegie RU/VH). This institutional representation differed somewhat from engineering faculty nationwide who were employed 16% at Baccalaureate or Master's institutions and 54% at RU/VH institutions. These data indicate the ways in which LTS faculty who are active in SOTL have changed over time and are different than typical engineering faculty. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Discussed are the requirements of a software-oriented engineering curriculum that also includes use of computer hardware. Three areas are identified as necessary in such a curriculum: functional area users, systems programming, and mini-micro technology. Each of these areas is discussed in terms of instructional methods and suggested topics. Course descriptions are given for such a curriculum at the United States Air Force Academy. (MH)

Two projects concerning the relationship between management capability and communication activities are described; both are considered interdisciplinary projects. Involved were researchers and practitioners from engineering and natural science fields as well as those from the social and managerial sciences. The objectives of the research were to: (1) develop workable criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of large-scale interdisciplinary projects, and (2) identify those organizational and personnel management characteristics most highly related to these criteria. Benefits to be achieved are: (1) to assist in efficient allocation and conservation of Federal dollars, (2) development of an efficient internal operation geared to interdisciplinary research, (3) to develop harmonious working relationships within the university or other large institutions, and (4) to enhance the initiative (and morale) or personnel involved in research. There are real opportunities for women in engineering, reflecting demands created by the dramatic rate of change in society. Increasingly complex technology, fast response time, the demands of production and managerial positions, increased levels of education and sophistication of employees, shifts in motivational needs, and new organizational structures are all factors in the rapidly expanding need for engineers. Women provide a previously untapped resource but are in short supply. Women need to make changes in the areas of: goal setting, competition, and job application skills; men in adjustment to working, or more successful wives. Couples should prepare to resolve conflicts over relocation, travel, and the role of the working mother. Industry needs to change in the areas of: stereotyped attitudes, traditional social conditioning, application of motivational factors, minimizing separations from the industrial climate, participation in more co-op programs, flexibility toward married career couples, closer relationships with universities, and broadened career paths for women. There probably will not be enough qualified women engineers for opportunities existing in the 1970's. Dramatic change in industry and educational institutions must occur if we are to respond realistically to the tremendous opportunities for women engineers. (Author/NH)

The scalar electrocardiogram (ECG) is one of the most important and commonly used clinical tools in medicine. A detailed description of the recordings of cardiac electrical activity made by the ECG is presented, and the vast numbers of uses made with the data provided by this diagnostic tool are cited. Clinical applications of the ECG are listed. More emphasis is placed on the fact that advances in the biomedical engineering aspects of clinical electrocardiography will require improved and on-going communication between the engineer and the clinician. Presented is a summary of a study made to identify existing two and four year Industrial Engineering Technology programs in the United States. A preliminary tabulation was made of the data procured and a model for identification was developed for discussion. A survey form was used and sent to 205 schools identified as possibly having such a curriculum. Ninety-one questionnaires were returned with 63 replies indicating the existence of such a program. A table is presented showing a summary of those schools that either had an AAS or BS program, or both. A copy of the letter sent, the survey questionnaire, and a bibliography are included. (EB)

The use of engineering cases as tools for learning engineering is stated to be about 10 years old. A brief account of the origin for years before 1950 is given. A note is made of an initial meeting held in 1962 when the potential of the case approach in teaching engineering was discussed. By 1964, case programs were in operation at three schools. Each are described briefly. Note is made of the formation of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Engineering Case Program Committee in 1971. The present members, 1976, are listed. The Engineering Case Library (ECL) which publishes and distributes case pamphlets is described. The Korea Advanced Institute of Science is cited as a good example of where this curriculum procedure has been successful. References are cited. (EB)

In this paper, the steps implemented by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) to upgrade the quality of the 1973 Graduate Science Student Support Survey are cited. Changes which were incorporated into the survey were intended to increase the scope and accuracy of data collected. To verify the coverage, a list of the institutions that made up the population surveyed in 1973 was compared with lists of Ph.D.-granting institutions maintained by federal agencies and professional associations with an interest in higher education. Discripancies were checked by telephone inquiry and adjustments in the survey base were made. The second major component of the study was to reconstruct the 1973 survey responses from departmental records for a sample of departments and to compare the resulting data with that which had been reported by the department. Also, selected student interviews were held in order to make comparisons with departmental records. (Author/CP)

The introductory materials science course at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (Massachusetts), while still being regarded as in a state of evolution, has remained nearly constant for the past two years. Since the course is given each term, except summer, to 40-90 students of various disciplines, there has been ample opportunity for continual experimentation and evaluation. The course material is divided into ten units of work, each with its own objective containing several measurable behavioral statements. Each student is allowed to proceed at that individual's own pace and, when ready, to be evaluated on each unit in sequence. Self-learning resources are listed with the unit objectives and include references to the "recommended" and "alternate" texts, suggested problems in each text, and designated numbers of specially made television tapes germane to the unit. Three regular class-meetings per week are scheduled. Evaluation and grading are based upon the results of a half-hour written assessment which is often called a "hurdle," followed by a ten to fifteen minute oral interview. A determination of "no pass" (0), "pass" (1), or "pass with distinction" (2) is made at that time from a combination of the written and oral evaluation. If students fail to pass, they repeat the unit. (LS)

In an effort to meet the diverse interests of the students and to move away from a rigidly structured curriculum, the Civil Engineering Department at the City College of New York has offered the civil engineering student an elective program that incorporates engineering and science electives as well as liberal arts electives. It was readily apparent that students could not be left to their own devices without being seriously impaired by taking unsatisfactory packages of electives. A pilot program was established by the Civil Engineering Department, with the assistance of the Office of Curriculum Guidance, to establish faculty mentors for all civil engineering students from upper freshmen to upper seniors. A primary objective of this program was to help improve the retention of engineering students. Faculty members were charged with the task of aiding the students in the task of selecting a program for successive terms which would lead to the successful completion of a Bachelor of Engineering program. He explains to the student the procedure for electing liberal arts electives, the restraints on the scope of the student's alternatives and the selection of the alternative civil engineering elective packages. At present, the other departments in the School of Engineering are implementing similar faculty monitoring systems. (LS)

Today, product liability cases seem to be increasing rapidly in both number and extent of liability of the manufacturer. Where analysis of defects and failures was once of interest to the enlightened company, it could well become a necessity for survival of all in the future. The materials engineer is likely to find many opportunities for displaying his prowess in this field. A course in Analysis of Defects and Failures was started in the fall of 1970 for senior mechanical engineering students at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (Massachusetts). Students helped prepare the course outline, which is included. The course presents unique opportunities for drawing together all of a student engineer's talents and training. A separate course in microstructure analysis has been developed and is recommended as background for the one in "defects." Students are given a list of the course objectives. The topics discussed are listed. The last few weeks of the course are devoted to group work in the analysis of a real failure. (LS)

Career planning seminars conducted by the Student Activities Committee of the Los Angeles Section of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics are discussed. The seminars address a forecast of trends in engineering; a discussion of opportunities in new engineering areas; and consideration of individual career goals. A sampling of a detailed evaluation of the first six seminars is presented. (MLH)

This paper examines the contributions of Industrial Engineering and Management Science toward reduction in the cost of production and distribution of food. Food processing firms were requested to respond to a questionnaire which asked for examples of their use of various operations research tools and information on the number of operations research people employed by them. Replies came only from large firms--with sales volume above $300 million annually. Another questionnaire, addressed to Directors of Industrial Engineering in food related companies, yielded responses from businesses with annual sales ranging from $85 million to $2.4 billion. Results of the questionnaire show a variety of approaches are being utilized in attacking the problems associated with food costs and availability. Although most of the work cited has been done by large businesses, the basic principles and techniques of methods improvement, work simplification, cost reduction and logical methods of problem analysis and development of solutions are applicable to small businesses as well. The organizational aspects of interdisciplinary research teams are discussed in terms of the way the following responsibilities are distributed over team members: assigning jobs, allocating resources, controlling communication, and evaluating the output of others. Suggestions are made for overcoming problems that arise from the inconsistent or indefinite assignment of responsibility in interdisciplinary teams. (MLH)

A visual problem-solving technique applicable to several different classes of mechanics time-dependent problems is discussed. The computer is used to solve the equations of motion of various mechanical systems by one of several standard methods, and the solutions are displayed in time increments. A specific example is provided to illustrate this technique. (MLH)

The flow of technology out of the United States is discussed. Methods of technology flow, such as licensing and investing, are identified, and the advantages and disadvantages of technology transfer are discussed, especially in relation to the government's role. (MLH)

This study involved approximately 1,000 girls and 300 boys from the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades of five Michigan junior high schools. The girls were randomly divided into five groups. Group A received live presentations by women engineers; Group B participated in four engineering projects; Group C received only printed materials; Group D received no special instruction, but their parents received printed materials, as did the parents of students in Groups A, B, and C; and Group E was the control group. A test instrument designed to measure awareness and attitudes toward engineering was administered before and after the study to all girl participants, controls, parents and faculty. The analysis portion of the study had not been completed at the time of this report. (MLH)

A three-year, in-house engineering course offered to selected General Electric Company engineers is discussed. It is designed to develop the ability to identify and solve real engineering problems. The course may be taken concurrently with college courses in a cooperative program that can result in a graduate degree in engineering. (MLH)

Drawn from a survey of engineering departments known to be teaching microprocessor courses, this paper shows that the adoption of microprocessors by Electrical Engineering Departments has been rapid compared with their adoption of minicomputers. The types of courses that are being taught can be categorized as: surveys of microprocessors, intensive study of one microcomputer, inclusion of microprocessors in a general course, project courses, and specific applications courses. It is proposed that the construction industry collaborate with educational practitioners and administrators to establish the objectives of construction engineering programs. Other recommendations are that the construction industry assume direct teaching responsibility for designated areas of instruction; provide program support, such as work opportunities and internships; and periodically review the operation of construction engineering programs, providing evaluations and suggestions to the program administrators where appropriate. A graduate program in engineering at the Joint Institute for Acoustics and Flight Sciences (JIAFS) is described. JIAFS is a cooperative undertaking between the NASA-Langley Research Center and the School of Engineering and Applied Science at The George Washington University. This program adopts a more practical approach than traditional graduate engineering education, providing a combination of applied research and academic studies. (MLH)

Papers are presented identifying fundamental research needs in water and wastewater treatment by industrial users of technology, industrial users of research, a municipal water department, a consulting engineer, Congress, and the EPA. Areas of research needs addressed include: (1) microbial, viral, and organic contaminants; (2) biological processes; (3) physiochemical processes; (4) control of wastewater treatment plants; (5) sludge disposal systems; and (6) water quality. In addition, research activities in environmental engineering being conducted by the National Science Foundation are identified. (BB)

Until recently, U.S. engineering education and American industry drew candidates from only about 43 percent of the potential market--white males. Many segments of American business, education, and government have been involved in a process to increase minority participation in engineering; the 1974 freshmen engineering enrollment for women increased 69 percent, versus 30 percent for Blacks and 22 percent for Mexican-Americans in 1974. Efforts by industry to increase minority interest in engineering are reported, but the need for additional programs is evidenced by the low influx of minority workers into the job market. In a series of recommendations directed to this topic, the author states, that among other things, (1) companies should not concentrate recruiting efforts solely on the national level and in their headquarters community, and (2) the development of cost-effective techniques for reaching minorities outside of urban areas is needed. The sympoisum was held to describe the roots and future plans of the Engineering Research Center's (ERC's) concept and program. The first section of this symposium compilation describes the national goals that the ERCs represent. The second section presents the point of view of the National Science Foundation on the ERCs--the concept behind them, their goals, selection criteria, and mechanisms for support. The next section provides the plans and programs of the six existing centers: (1) Systems Research Center; (2) Center for Intelligent Manufacturing Systems; (3) Center for Robotic Systems in Microelectronics; (4) Center for Composites Manufacturing Science and Engineering; (5) Engineering Center for Telecommunications; and (6) Biotechnology Process Engineering Center. Two of the presentations were on exchange methods among the centers and the relationship between engineering education and research. The last section details a look at the future of U.S. industry and engineering. Papers outline the roles that centers can play in aiding and stimulating mature industries, growth industries, and emerging industries. (Author/YP)

The Acre is a 'retrofirst' refurbishment of a 1980s office building in central London, UK, with 80% of the original structure being reuse. A key requirement was to temporarily divide the ten-storey building into two independent parts during demolition and later reconstruction of linking units. This paper describes the award-winning temporary works used to create a clear work front, with four props horizontally stabilising the building while the site was served by rooftop tower cranes. Far fewer temporary elements were required than first envisaged, leading to benefits to programme, cost, safety and emissions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper discusses attitudes toward technical-writing courses, presenting four reasons that some people view those courses with disdain and demonstrating why those reasons are inappropriate. These attitudes reflect disdain for what many people take to be the dull, unimaginative, nonhumanistic nature of the subject. In refutation, the paper emphasizes the humanistic aspects of technical writing, showing how technical writing skills can be useful and how they can affect human lives. (RL)

The paper details the current state of the art in applying technology to communication with the disabled. Noted is the increased application of modularity to hardware design allowing upgrading as improvements become available. After definitions of such key terms as "conversation,""control," and "computer access," the paper looks at components of aid systems including the physical interface, the selection technique, acceleration techniques, output forms, and the underlying processes involved in communication and control activities. Specifically critiqued are aid systems in the area of voice output, synthetic speech for telephone communication, visual displays accompanying voice output devices, and computer access and control. This paper analyses rock mass quality based on an engineering geological investigation conducted at the Rongkong diversion tunnel, Luwu Utara Regency, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The research area's surface and subsurface were mapped geologically, and drill cores were evaluated along the tunnel. In addition, laboratory test data further reinforced these investigations. This study aims to evaluate the characteristics of the rock mass in the tunnel using the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) method. However, in cases involving weak rock and complex geology, another alternative approach is known as the Geological Strength Index (GSI) method. The results indicated that the Rongkong diversion tunnel under investigation primarily comprised lithological, including granodiorite and schist. The rock mass shows varying degrees of weathering, ranging from slight to complete. The study area's RMR rock mass values ranged from 33 – 59 (poor to fair quality), while the GSI values ranged from 15 – 58 (very poor to good quality). The effect of weathering degree can be one of the factors causing poor rock mass quality. Furthermore, this paper also examines the correlation between RMR and GSI. The equation GSI = 1.66RMR – 39.44 (R² = 0.94) was obtained from analysis of the correlation between GSI and RMR in the research area. Therefore, the obtained correlation results may serve as recommendations for other regions exhibiting comparable lithology and rock mass characteristics within the scope of this study. The lifetime of Frontiers in Education (FIE), 42 years and counting, has been a time of many innovations in engineering and computing education. The FIE Conference has become the premiere conference for presentation and discussion of excellent educational research and innovative curricula in engineering education. This accomplishment would not have been possible without the vision and strong leadership of the three sponsoring professional societies - American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Educational Research and Methods Division, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Computer Society, and the IEEE Education Society. The theme of this year's conference is "Soaring to New Heights in Engineering Education." In line with this theme, this proceedings presents over 411 conference papers with a focus on expanding the diverse community of international scholars and enriching the foundation of educational research that FIE has built over its history. Individual papers contain tables, figures, and references. An index is included.

With a national shortage of skilled technicians and engineers in the microelectronics industry, developing talent to fill roles in the workforce is critical for the U.S. national security and economy. Given this, a public-private-academic ecosystem was formed with the goal of further developing the U.S. microelectronics workforce. This Work in Progress Paper describes one of seven findings of a workforce needs assessment study completed by this group. Communication was a key finding of this assessment and was a link between the technical and professional skills identified. This finding guided the research questions for this paper: (1) What value do hiring professionals and supervisors in microelectronics engineering place on communication when hiring entry-level microelectronics technicians and engineers? (2) How do microelectronics industry professionals describe desired communication skills? Looking specifically at communication, the following sub theme was identified. Within microelectronics, effective communication among individuals and within interdisciplinary teams is necessary as it allows technical information to be quickly "distilled" and understood by management and other nontechnical stakeholders. However, participants shared that individuals often lack sufficient oral and written communication skills that allow them to quickly and succinctly articulate the "so what" to non-technical stakeholders. This paper includes detailed examples of how microelectronics professionals describe and value communication skills and identifies ways that focusing on communication as a professional skill improves student development, the associated student outcomes, and career readiness. Teamwork skills are increasingly gaining importance in graduates' qualifications in engineering programs. The interconnected systems of the workflow of engineering products and projects necessitate certain technical and managerial skill sets. The need for multifaceted professionals is highlighted further by the advancement of tools and methods for remote collaboration on projects. This study's objective was to explore students' perceptions of the different aspects of teamwork. The first phase of this study was conducted in Fall 2022, in which students in the Construction, Biomedical, and Mechanical Engineering Departments at Mississippi State University were recruited to participate in a survey on different aspects of teamwork. A quantitative approach was used to ascertain essential facets of teamwork and provide content for in-depth exploration. This paper contains two main result sections. The first one addresses similarities and differences between gender-based students' perceptions. The second section focuses on the perceptions of students from underrepresented groups and highlights distinctions among groups' responses. This study contributes to the body of knowledge by providing key aspects of teamwork that can be incorporated into engineering course layouts. Also, it reports on barriers and shortcomings in team-based practices and activities. The findings of this paper help engineering scholars and educators to design and develop opportunities to inclusively develop teamwork skill sets in engineering students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The underrepresentation of women in engineering is well-known and well-documented. Women have experienced harmful discrimination due to bias, stereotypes, and an overall lack of institutional support. This paper aims to provide a platform focused on educating to empower individuals to continue to address gender inequity in engineering and computer science in academia. A structured literature review was conducted to focus on the disparities that exist for women, explore why those disparities exist, and discuss solutions that could help close the gender gap. The results of the literature review are coupled with the discussion outcomes from a panel on gender and racial equity in engineering conducted at the 2022 ASEE Annual Conference & Exposition. This paper is also meant to serve as a record of the panel and discussion that was generated. The panelist perspectives include faculty, administrative, and student roles in engineering at institutions of higher education who shared their experiences, insights, knowledge, and wisdom on what has contributed to the imbalance and what must be done to overcome it. This paper presents the initial work of a recently funded NSF project on ethical and responsible research and practices in science and engineering. The objective of this research is to improve instructor training, interventions, and student outcomes in high schools and universities to improve awareness and commitment to ethical practices in STEM coursework. The project will generate a robust snapshot of the ethical knowledge, reasoning skills, attitudes, and practices of several thousand undergraduate engineering students. This snapshot will inform the development of a three-week enrichment opportunity for high school STEM teachers. Working with university faculty and graduate students, these teachers will develop learning modules on ethical issues related to their courses. The snapshot will also identify gaps and guide the creation of targeted interventions that will be used in second-, third-, and fourth-year engineering courses. This data-driven project uses a mixed-methods approach to generate a better understanding of the impact of ethics interventions at various points in a student's academic development by developing and using a set of instruments to measure cognitive, affective, and behavioral aspects of ethical competency and self-efficacy. To that end, a second snapshot will be taken by testing and surveying engineering students in their capstone courses to provide a broad overview of the competence and self-confidence that engineering students have in dealing with ethical STEM issues, to determine the efficacy of various interventions, and to improve future interventions. Utilizing repeated measures and possessing a longitudinal dimension, the project will generate extensive data about the development of ethical competency, ethical self-efficacy, and their relationship. The interventions designed for secondary and tertiary classrooms will build on best practices for micro-insertion of ethics content that are practical and help students understand how technical competencies fit within broader social, economic, and environmental contexts. The capstone snapshot will also provide some measure of the impact of other experiences (e.g., undergraduate research, internships, service learning) and courses (e.g., humanities, social science, and business courses) on development of ethical practices. This report marks the start of a fiveyear project; therefore, the results presented in this paper represent findings from the engineering ethics literature and baseline results from survey of engineering freshmen at Texas A&M University. The findings from the survey are being utilized in developing intervention modules that will be integrated in upper-level engineering courses and training materials for high school teachers. Concern has grown that the United States is losing its competitive edge in science and technology (S&T). The factors driving this concern include globalization, the rise of science centers in developing countries such as China and India, the increasing number of foreign-born Ph.D. students in the United States, and claims of a shortage of S&T workers in the United States. A loss of prowess in S&T could hurt U.S. economic competitiveness, standard of living, and national security. The Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness asked the RAND Corporation to convene a meeting in November 2006 to discuss these issues. This volume contains the short papers presented at the meeting and discussed by the analysts, policymakers, military officers, professors, and business leaders who attended. The papers cover a broad range of topics, including science policy, the quantitative assessment of S&T capability, globalization, the rise of Asia (in particular, China and India), innovation, trade, technology diffusion, the increase in foreign-born Ph.D. recipients working in the United States, new directions in the management and compensation of federal S&T workers, and national security and the defense industry. Taken as a set, the papers provide at least a partial survey of the facts, challenges, and questions posed by the possible erosion of U.S. S&T capabilities. Contained in this volume are lectures, summaries of presented papers, and main plenary papers of a seminar, held at Helsinki University of Technology, on the education and training of engineers. The objectives of the seminar were to review the present status and trends of the continuing education of engineers in Europe and around the world, to identify and discuss common problems, and to make recommendations for future action, in particular that to be taken on a regional or international level by FEANI, UNESCO, and other bodies. Included in the four appendices are addresses delivered at the opening session of the seminar, summaries of additional papers submitted to the seminar, a list of participants, and a list of members of the local organizing committee. This report comprises papers commissioned for the World Congress on Educating Engineers for World Development, sponsored by the International Division of the American Society for Engineering Education, and held in Colorado in June 1975. The purpose of the Congress was to bring about significant changes in the education of engineers and in the practice of engineering so that engineers will be more capable of attacking world development problems. Sixteen major papers from 12 countries are included and cover the following subject areas: energy resources development, industrialization, human settlements, planning and management of projects, agriculture and food systems, and technology and cultures.
