Super teak is a fast grown species of teak (Tectona grandis Linn. f) derived from several clones. This has facilitated plantation rotations as short as 5 years. The main target of conventional plantation teak was initially for high value logs. Young teak wood from plantation forest usually has a small diameter. Moreover, the wood from very young stems is unsuitable for direct utilization, but advance wood processing technology can improve the wood properties of small diameter logs. This study aimed to assess the potential utilization of young super teak for high quality products namely furniture, flooring, and veneer, and assess the possibility of the use of manufacture waste for pulp paper and wood pellets as side products. The evaluation were carried out according to the National Indonesian Standard and other international standard requirements. 18 logs from wet (Bogor) and dry (Magetan) sites representing large, medium, and small diameter classes were collected. According to SNI 01-0608-1989 Timber for Furniture, 5-year-old super teak was suitable for furniture production. Furthermore, according to SNI 7732.1: 2011: Teak Veneer, the super teak was classified as Grade C because of the presence of sapwood, pinholes, tight and lose knots. According to Australian Timber Flooring Association, 5-year-old super teak was classifiesd as soft flooring group, the same group as mature teak & radiata pine. The young super teak was classified as Class Quality/Group II with very low active alkali consumption and low Kappa Number according to Indonesian wood fibre criteria for pulp and paper materials and Association of Pulp and Paper in Brazil. Finally, based on SNI 802: 2014 Wood Pellet, the super teak was recommended as by-products for utilising the wood waste. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Organized to focus world-wide public attention on the massive gender inequalities in many areas of the world, a seminar entitled "Women and Literacy Development--Constraints and Prospects" was held in Sweden during August 1991. Case studies and seminar reports are provided that were presented at an international seminar to examine field experiences in using a culture-based approach to nonformal education. Part I, containing an introductory paper and nine case studies, focuses on indigenous institutions and processes in health, family planning, agriculture, basic education, and conscientization. The introductory paper discusses indigenous sociocultural forms as a basis for nonformal education and development. Seven countries are represented in the case studies: Indonesia, Bolivia, Java (Indonesia), Upper Volta, Botswana, India, and Bali (Indonesia). Section II focuses on the performing arts in both mass campaigns and community nonformal education programs. An introductory paper overviews folk media, popular theater, and conflicting strategies for social change in the third world. The seven case studies consider the specific strategies used in Brazil, Sierra Leone, China, India, Mexico, Jamaica, and Africa. Section III contains the seminar reports developed from discussions of the four regional working groups: Latin America, Africa and the Caribbean, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. Configuration, strategy, and leadership style in five Brazilian universities are examined. Though research tends to focus on the university as a professional bureaucracy, it is demonstrated that other configurations are also applicable. The link between configuration and strategy making is traced, with insights into how strategies are formed in universities provided. Ways in which leaders set strategic direction are examined. Topics of discussion are: (1) decision making and structure in higher education (bureaucracy, collegiality, political model, organized anarchy, mixed models, and models of governance in higher education); (2) the business literature; (3) configuration: a framework for analysis; (4) strategy making in the university; (5) Brazil's universities; (6) university configurations (organized anarchy, the political arena, the adhocracy, the missionary organization, and the machine bureaucracy); (7) strategy making (disconnected academic strategy, emergent strategy, umbrellas and ideology, and planned and unrealized strategy); and (8) leadership style and strategy. Administrators may focus on elements other than academic strategy. Academic strategy corresponds to university outputs (research and teaching) and inputs (staff and students). Physical strategy is related to the various support components on which the university relies to get its work done (physical facilities, fund raising, and support staff). They are usually centralized functions and are more amenable to central intervention. Problems facing Brazilian universities are rooted in a problem of goals, the disintegration of the community of scholars, and growth and bureaucratization. Different goals of the university that need to be conciliated are the roles of teaching and research, or helping the young become men and conducting scientific and technological investigations capable of assuring the autonomy of Brazilian industrial expansion. In Brazilian universities it is difficult to exchange professors with foreign institutions, acquire and subscribe to books and journals, and hire and transfer professors. The growing diversity of the fields of knowledge has led to departmentalization and specialization with the consequence of isolating professors. Students cannot limit themselves exclusively to studying and exchanging ideas because of socioeconomic conditions. The university department is the operational unit responsible for teaching, research, and extension of all fields of knowledge and should coordinate and integrate these functions. Coordination is the principle problem of an organization. An administrative body should be based upon the departments; administrators should be trained at the department level and rise to higher levels with a sensitivity to the problems of the smaller departmental unit. The university should characterize itself as an integrated functional unit where everyone has specific and interdependent functions. The organizational theory of Mary Parker Follett is discussed. The aim of the study is to examine how multiculturalism and peace studies have been viewed in Brazilian and North American literature as gleaned both from Brazilian research studies and articles presented at Peace Education Special Interest Group (SIG) in American Education Research Association (AERA), within the scope of 2010-2014, which concludes that multiculturalism and peace studies may offer groundbreaking venues to promote education provision to every one, civilian and military students together with reforms in higher education. The CELDA 2013 conference aims to address the main issues concerned with evolving learning processes and supporting pedagogies and applications in the digital age. Women participation in computer science and related areas in Brazil is fewer than men, considering quantitative researches on both labor market and academic space. Brazilian Society of Computing supports an initiative to discuss the disparities in this issue in Brazil: Women in Information Technology - WIT. We analyze 81 short papers published on 10th, 11th, and 12tth editions of the event to highlight information on interests, practices, and origins of these papers. We base our analysis on Science, Technology, and Society (STS) and Feminist studies and we point out to plural and inclusive computing that open participation of all people in all spheres of society considering the social, cultural and historical aspects of society in the 21st century. This document contains seven papers about and from an international meeting on promoting linkage between technical and vocational education and the world of work. The first paper, a Final Report on the "International Expert Meeting on the Promotion of Linkage between Technical/Vocational Education and the World of Work (Tokyo, Japan, 3-6 February 1997)," examines the following: the meeting's purpose; main points raised in the keynote and country papers and multimedia presentations; major issues (major implications of multimedia and networks and their use to develop competencies through self-learning; financing of the development of multimedia approaches; evaluation of student achievements through multimedia methods; and new roles of teachers); field visits connected with the meeting; and recommendations to United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) member states. In this paper, we bring a comparison study between the original genome sequence of SARS-CoV 2 virus, ID: MN908947, coming from China 2019, and sequences of SARS-CoV 2 virus - P.1 variant, coming from Brazil 2021. Using tools of stochastic processes and through the identification of each sequence as being a sample of a stochastic process, after finding the best model for each sequence, we build dendrograms using a metric introduced in [1] that show that the original sequence can be considered in a separated cluster when compared with the P.1 variant. In this paper, we report on a study that took place during the COVID-19 pandemic and for which we interviewed ten experienced, university level, language instructors about their digital practices as they found themselves teaching in an Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT) mode. The study sought to describe how, through their professional activities and experiences, they developed new and/ or further online competencies and how the ERT context brought them to rethink their pedagogical practices and namely, their Written Corrective Feedback (WCF). Our results show that language instructors' digital competencies are on a dynamic continuum of changes with some who faced challenges, while others sought opportunities or provided solutions during that unprecedented period. An adapted version of the SAMR (Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition) model (Puentedura, 2010) is suggested, which takes into consideration this ERT context. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were developed by the United Nations in 2015 to encompass universal respect for equality and non-discrimination regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, and cultural diversity. Since 2000, Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS) have aligned with SDG 4.3 by developing higher education institutions (HEIs) which aims to "By 2030, ensure equal access for all women and men to affordable and quality technical, vocational and tertiary education, including university". This was intended to create equal opportunities and permit full realisation and prosperity of human rights and human dignity. This paper explores the effectiveness of managing racial integration in BRICS HEIs and illustrates remarkable progress in research and policy enactment. Particular attention is devoted to the period from the mid-2000s when evidence around the globe exposed the presence of many forms of violence, which inhibit management of effective racial integration. Based on case studies from selected BRICS countries (South Africa, Russia, and Brazil), this paper explores how the management of racial integration is being addressed within these contexts. AMCIS is once again returning to Latin America! This research-in-progress study provides a brief review of information systems (IS) research with Latin American relevance during the past four years. It showed that the majority of the studies focused on IT innovation and digital government, with Brazilian and Mexican cases being prominent. For 47 years, the purpose of the genetic breeding program "Uvas do Brasil", led by Embrapa Uva e Vinho, has been the development of novel grape cultivars adapted to Brazilian conditions. The program uses classical breeding methods and biotechnological approaches to create new cultivars based on the genetic variation of more than a thousand genotypes preserved in the Germplasm Bank at Embrapa. Since its inception, the program has released 21 cultivars meeting the demands of national grape growers and wine industry alike. These locally bred cultivars allowed juice and wine production in the tropics, expanded seedless grape exports in the semi-arid Northeast, and, improved the quality of the grapes and their derived products in the traditional region Serra Gaúcha. These new cultivars represent genuine Brazilian products, boosting yield and quality. The use of adapted genotypes also lower production costs and reduces the environmental impact of vineyards. In conclusion, locally bred grapevine cultivars increase the growers' security and result in competitive advantages for Brazilian grapes in the national and international markets. This exploratory study examines (non)white candidate textual and visual framing (Reese, 2003) in the context of a local election as informed by print national press and a telenovela to assess the current state of media opening in Brazil. Media opening is the process by which mass media become more representative of societal viewpoints and more independent of official control (Porto, 2007). A sample of 313 newspaper and newsmagazine reports and 292 photos concurrent with when municipal campaigns were gearing up for October 2008 elections are analyzed to see how Brazilian leaders and local election candidates are framed. Likewise, 31 episodes of concurrent TV Globo 8 p.m. telenovela Duas Caras spanning its first to final episodes are studied to understand telenovela local election candidate portrayal. The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between the percentage of expenditure on public education of a country and the effect that each percentage mark has on the economic growth, and therefore Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of a country. The goal of this paper is to explore how investment in education impacts the economic growth of a country through the production of more skilled workers in the workforce. This paper aims to draw a comparison between the BRICS countries, and a representative number of the countries in the European Union to compare the investment, process and product delivered through these groupings. By looking at the production function from a Marxist perspective it is inevitable to notice that the error coefficient is significantly higher within the BRICS countries than in the European Union, which is reflected in the rate of economic growth. This paper would be of interest to economists, education policy makers, researchers, and scholars.

The objective of this paper is to report the preliminary results of a telecollaborative project between a Brazilian university (UTFPR) and a Colombian university (Universidad de Pamplona) that both offer a Licentiate degree in English. The project had two purposes: a pedagogical one to show student-teachers how they can develop their communication skills in English in a collaborative way by sharing information with other student-teachers from a different culture, and a technological one to put future teachers in contact with some technological tools. The paper is divided into three parts: (1) a brief description of the context and the participants; (2) the project itself -- the first steps, the objectives, and the tasks; and (3) the Brazilian view of the whole process/project as well as the students' feedback. The aim of this paper is to present the evaluation process Higher Education Institutions go through in Brazil when offering distance education courses at graduate and post-graduate levels. The paper highlights the main aspects of the legislation, discusses what the accreditation processes entail, presents a graduate course (a teaching qualification), the evaluation instrument, and the feedback received, and concludes with some final considerations on the process experienced. As imperceptible as it is, mathematics is fundamental and is present on several occasions in our daily lives, but among 65 countries Brazil still ranks 53rd in education. The lack of investment in primary education has affected students learning since the early years. From this perspective, this paper proposed to verify teaching/learning in mathematics discipline for elementary school students through playful games, a fun method that can be used at various times and aims to review and fix the content in a practical way and interactive. For this, a game named "Mathematical rods" was elaborated a renewal of the hobby "Cat rods". The operations present in the game are simple, focused on basic mathematics and can still be adapted depending on the level of knowledge of the students. The game was applied to three groups of six 9th grade students of the State College Professor Izidoro Luiz Ceravolo, located in the city of Apucarana, Paraná in Brazil. Therefore, in addition to dynamic and creative, we conclude that this educational interpretation is easy and accessible, a tool that can be used in any public institution, contributing to the learning process of students. This paper presents how Brazilian judiciary organizations are advancing towards a preserved digital environment, and how this process is improving the country's legal system. First, it analyzed the legal norms published by some of the most relevant Brazilian institutions and how these norms fostered the major courts to immediately start projects related to digital preservation. Second, the major challenges faced by these organizations while fulfilling the legal requirements were listed, and a general strategy to attend to them was defined. Subsequently, a model was established to fulfill these requirements. The model was structured to consider the possibilities of future expansion. As the main result of this research, a model capable of setting archival digital preservation projects was designed for the first time, enabling their consequent application by judiciary institutions in Brazil. Explaining behaviors around telemedicine acceptance in developing countries is an important developing area of study. This study aims to explore the effect of plasticity on telemedicine acceptance in Brazil. This paper focuses on Brazilian patients and their acceptance of telemedicine through the Theory of Planned Behavior and the concept of Plasticity as a superordinate factor of the patients’ personality traits. An online survey of Brazilian patients was carried out, and PLS analysis was then utilized on the results. Results indicate that the proposed model explains 62.1% of the behavioral intention of the use of telemedicine by the patients. Furthermore, the findings indicate that attitude has the strongest direct effect on behavioral intention, with plasticity playing a considerable role in the strength of the effect. Rice husk ash, sludge, fly ash and fly ash are waste materials used in concrete mix as supplement of cement. All these waste materials enhanced the mechanical and physical properties of concrete mix. Nowadays Sugarcane bagasse ash is getting the more attention of researcher due its fineness and help to improve the setting properties, strength properties and corrosion retardant. Pandemic has changed the way education has taken place in Brazil, which has occurred remotely. The classes have been taught in the public network especially through lives or WhatsApp. In this paper, the way in which the training activities of the supervised internship and the Pedagogical Residency in the teaching of Physics in schools took place will be addressed. As a result, the abundant use of new information and communication technologies was verified. Resources and methodologies such as digital platforms, simulators, gamification, among others, were used by pre-service teachers during supervised internship and/or Pedagogical Residency activities. With this, pre-service teachers were able to immerse themselves in the current school reality, better understanding how teaching has occurred in this period and to propose activities that could help to improve the quality of teaching offered in basic education schools and in the recycling of in-service teachers, as well as in the motivation of students, too. Since 1987, Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra (FMUC) has been engaged in mobility programs, making efforts to encourage and support the internationalization of its students. Mobility programs are designed to strengthen the dimension and quality of the Higher Education, to encourage transnational cooperation between Universities, to improve transparency and academic recognition of studies and qualifications. The objective of this paper is to present a report on the evolution of mobility of the FMUC undergraduate students in the period between 2009 and 2019. A descriptive report was carried out. During this last decade, the FMUC has dealt with mobility applications from 1,500 incoming and 1,350 outgoing students to attend both classes and clinical traineeships as part of their Master's Degrees in Medicine. In the academic year 2015-2016 there was an increase in the number of applications, coinciding with the introduction of clinical internships in hospitals. The top countries where the FMUC sent students (538); and from where it received students (978) were, Italy, Spain and Brazil. In Portugal, the FMUC is one of the main medical schools with the largest number of students attending mobility programs, which has contributed to fostering the internationalization of undergraduate medical students' training. Students' perceptions of an activity involving visualization are important in assessing their learning of the task. In view of this, this study was developed with undergraduate students from different courses at a public Brazilian university. The research objective was to determine how three students, who are majoring in different courses (chemistry graduation and engineering), perceive their participation in an inquiry-based metavisual activity (IBMA). For this, the students were interviewed and data were categorized according to similarities and differences in the reports. The findings indicate that the IBMA was able to facilitate the reconstruction of concepts with an emphasis at the submicro level, for the students that were majoring in chemistry. The engineering student reported a partial construction of concepts. The student's learning may have been compromised due to the smaller repertoire that he had in chemistry and on models at the submicro level. [For the full proceedings, see ED629086.]

The construction of a concept can be developed from the students' prior knowledge. Regarding deaf students, it is considered their conceptions conceived through vision. Given this, the present research was conducted with a group of deaf students in the 7th year of elementary school with the aim of verifying what ideas these students had about science. The research was carried out with a qualitative approach, using action research. For data collection, an activity was proposed with the elaboration of drawings, carried out in three stages: (1) initial conversation and elaboration of the drawings; (2) explanation of the drawings (in Libras); (3) closure of the activity. Drawings were prepared, speeches (in Libras) transcribed and notes from the logbook were used for analysis. The analyzed data revealed three categories in which students conceived decontextualized views, also demonstrating a distance from science and applications in everyday life. In relation to the visuality of the deaf student, the difficulty was evidenced in selecting and interpreting the various information that was conveyed around them. Science education objectives in Brazil have evolved over time. Initially, the focus was on creating scientifically literate citizens who could relate scientific concepts to their daily lives. In 2017, the São Paulo City Curriculum for Natural Sciences was introduced to teach students scientific literacy through inquiry-based teaching methods. This study focused on the perceptions of teachers from an primary school in São Paulo who participated by filling out a Google Forms questionnaire. The findings revealed that the majority of participating teachers had undergone curriculum implementation training. While they considered the organization of disciplinary content to be similar to their previous teaching methods, they struggled with implementing inquiry-based teaching strategies and linking scientific content to the United Nation Foundation 2030 sustainable development goals. Biodiesel is the most promising alternative fuel for replacing diesel in diesel engines, its use as a diesel substitute can reduce emissions of greenhouse gases and smoke. Among the techniques capable of promoting the production of biodiesel, the most used on an industrial scale is the transesterification of raw materials. Brazil has a socioeconomic advantage in the production of biodiesel due to the high availability of raw materials in the agro-industrial sector. A culture capable of providing a low-cost source of triglycerides in the Rio Grande do Sul is the rice culture, as its processing generates bran as a by-product of rice, considered an agricultural residue, from which it is possible to extract vegetable oil. Brazil is the ninth largest rice producer in the world, therefore, the present study aims to explore the production of biodiesel via basic transesterification of rice bran vegetable oil with high quality in order to encourage the use of biofuel and promote the diversification of its matrix. On the whole, the paper leads the conclusion that biodiesel of rice bran oil production via methyl transesterification using KOH as a catalyst with 7.5:1 of molar ratio, 1.25% catalyst and 60 minutes of reaction, is viable and capable of producing biodiesel with the quality required by ANP, EN and ASTM specifications for yield, moisture, kinematic viscosity, acidity index, saponification and iodine. This paper aims to identify limitations and opportunities for using live streaming for distance learning classes in a course offered at a Brazilian public university. The number of videos on social networks in different fields and about various topics increases each year. Real-time classes are also increasingly being used in distance learning courses. Live streaming through YouTube enables an interactive experience because it allows for images, videos, music, and screenshots to be used during the broadcast. This enhances the experience and interaction between the spectator and presenter and enables real-time discussions. A distance learning course was offered in the first semester of 2019 (between May and July) to foster discussions about pedagogical architectures for the construction of digital competences in Distance Learning (DL). During the course, six classes were live-streamed and broadcast via YouTube. There was one class per week, lasting an average of 40 minutes each and covering distinct topics. This is a qualitative case study with 14 subjects between the ages of 35 and 64. They were primarily female and mainly their mobile devices to watch the classes. Different types of data collection instruments were applied including an online questionnaire and YouTube video platform metrics. The students reported that the classes were essential for interaction and helped to answer their questions due to real-time feedback, which qualifies the teaching and learning processes. The metrics from the YouTube platform revealed that the videos were watched mainly in Brazil and the United States, with over 1,500 views so far, 10% of which had live interactions through chat. This example shows both the range and engagement of students with the live streamed classes as well as the possibilities for interaction. Therefore, live-streamed classes are important for DL courses and should be integrated in planning in order to contribute to the distance learning process. [For full proceedings, see ED621941.]

Homeschooling is an alternative method of teaching where parents take the responsibility of education and teach their children at home. This method of education is increasing worldwide. Various authorities around the world have taken note of this trend and recognized homeschooling as an alternative method of education in their legislation. The paper examines the educational policy and practice of homeschooling in the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) through a literature study, with the aim of comparing the five countries to hit. It also looks at what the BRICS countries can learn from each other regarding homeschooling. Most of the BRICS countries have education law that does not provide for homeschooling. In the countries where homeownership is legal, there are strict requirements that must be met. These requirements place a heavy burden on home school parents. However, it is clear from the investigation that homeschooling is increasing in the BRICS countries legally and illegally. There are also other similarities arising from the study.

In this paper, we discuss the impacts of the pandemic generated by COVID-19 on Brazilian Higher Education, specifically at a State University of Bahia, Brazil. To do so, we present a brief contextualization of the progress of the pandemic in Brazil, in the state of Bahia and in the region where the University is located. We also present the laws and regulations elaborated by different governmental bodies, especially the Ministry of Education, for the continuation of classes, in face-to-face undergraduate courses, by remote means. Despite the initial emphasis of these regulations on the use of Digital Information and Communication Technologies, later there was a flexibility regarding the means for offering the remote classes. As for the case of the University discussed here, the continuation of undergraduate courses' classes interrupted by the pandemic, via the Emergency Remote Education, was approved on July 9th. We focus specifically on the outline of the student digital inclusion program, which provides scholarships for the acquisition of equipment, internet services and transportation. The results show that the resources allocated to this plan are insufficient, given the socioeconomic low-profile of the students. In addition, many of them live in locations with insufficient or no internet available, as well as are working and/or taking care of people full-time during the pandemic. Thus, the guarantee of access of students to the Emergency Remote Education, as well as the quality of this Education, may not be ensured through this plan. Innovation technology is essential for the development of companies, especially in the technology sector, and is linked to the economic and social development of a country. However, in Brazil, knowledge is normally produced by universities, lacking alignment with the industry. Thus, technology parks act as promoters of interaction between university-industry-government, favoring the creation and development of technology-based companies and the transfer of knowledge between universities and companies. However, there is no consensus on what constitutes a successful technology park, and there is a lack of common evaluation metrics that allow for systematic comparison of parks. Evaluating the performance of parks is important to provide transparency on how public resources are being spent. This study aims to present the evolution of technology parks in Brazil. The results indicate that the country has 59 technology parks, housing 2,516 companies, generating approximately 53,000 jobs, with an estimated revenue of over R$12 billion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Risk management involves both objective and subjective factors. In principle, objective factors are expressed by numerical values being classified by limit values or ranges, while subjective factors express values that can hardly be represented numerically. The evaluation problem tends to worsen when events must be compared and a selection or ordering must be performed. Besides that, projects are part of day to day of the organizations and it is quite common that the number of demands exceeds the capacity of the team available. For this reason, the importance of considering defined processes to help select and prioritize those who are most relevant to an institution. This paper presents a solution proposal to measure and analyze the efficiency degree associated to Brazilian Small Hydroelectric Power Plants (SHPs) in terms of resources and of efforts allocation on implementation of their Dams Safety programs, against the background of National Security Policy established for this of infrastructure type, having like motivation the need to support and rationalize the regulatory oversight process of the governmental authority that supports it. The method, based on multicriteria analysis and data envelopment methods, focused on improving the knowledge and techniques related to the the conformity monitoring process of the facilities by weighing a relevant set of consolidated and technically recognized factors. Its application made possible to measure and guarantee the judgments consistency throughout the process, minimizing risks, promoting greater rationalization and administrative transparency, enabling, within the principles of Collaborative Governance, the access of interested parties to understandable information that goes beyond those determined by legal provisions. This papers aims at analyzing the perception of Accounting professors about the necessary qualifications in Accounting undergraduate courses. The contribution of this study is to theoretically discuss the education of Accounting professors, with empirical data, because Accounting teaching requires specific competencies in the digital area. The research is applied in the Accounting Higher Education, descriptive in relation to the objectives, a qualitative approach to the problem with quantitative elements for descriptive data analysis. The technical procedure was the survey by online questionnaire via Google Forms. The research population are professors of the Accounting professional education in undergraduate courses in Brazil. The sample consisted of 378 professors, selected by the representativeness and typicality criteria. The results evidenced the perception of professors about the complexity of Accounting teaching, by applying a set of professional, academic and pedagogical competencies as well as practical knowledge about the accounting practice and teaching. However, they indicated the prevalence attributed by professors to the technical competency and professional practice knowledge over the other educational competencies. The professors showed feeling of deficiency in relation to the academic education received and they worried about the need for continuous training. They also prove, with empirical data, that mastering contents by Accounting professors is not enough to the teaching practice in Accounting courses. The results obtained in this paper may support institutional policies regarding continuous education of professors in Accounting undergraduate courses as well as the proposition of initiatives to develop them systematically by the education institutions. Multicultural organizations can be central to mitigate organizational situations in which envy could potentially flourish, therefore contributing to fostering organizational conduct that leads to institutional social responsibility. The paper focuses on the inner workings of organizations related to their leaders' understanding of what the expression "social responsibility" means. The article highlights how envy among its members could be tackled in order to boost social responsibility, and promote social justice. The paper analyses institutional leaders' discourses from an enterprise and from a higher education institution (HEI), gleaning their meaning of social responsibility and their perceptions of their role in challenging envy as part of that social responsibility agenda. In order to challenge envy and promote fair conducts and social responsibility, the role of positive multicultural leaders and the strengthening of an organizational collective identity should be emphasized. The findings suggest that organizations need to be better equipped in order to face organizational turbulences detrimental to the social responsibility success, by focusing on cultural diversity and retention of good workforce as part of their social responsibility and social justice remit. The paper discusses social responsibility in a way that goes beyond the hitherto prevalent focus on environmental concerns and corporate accountability. Also, it is relevant comparatively in that it shows aspects to be addressed for the success of social responsibility in international contexts. The NoSQL database is an alternative to manage big data. It is essential to change from a relational database to a NoSQL database to evaluate the new scenario's performance. In this context, our paper presents an empirical performance comparison between MySQL and MongoDB on analytical queries in the COMEX Database. The COMEX Database is responsible for all Brazilian foreign trade statistics and many agencies need to constantly make big analytical queries on it to analyze businessrelated queries. This paper details the redesign process of the bank reconciliation interface of ContaAzul, an online cloud-based financial management software for small businesses in Brazil. The reconciliation is a feature that allows the users to import bank account statements and easily register them into the software, generating automated reports that help the financial control of the small companies. The research problem was motivated by use cases that are not covered in the current version of this feature, as well as by recent technological advances, such as application programming interfaces (APIs) and similar software available in the market, justifying the redesign. Interaction design was chosen as the project approach and Garrett's five planes as the methodology. As the final deliverable, a prototype was composed of static, bitmap screens, elaborated from a participatory design perspective, which was presented to the software engineering team for further implementation. This research was developed as a course conclusion project in the Master's Degree in Design of University of the Region of Joinville, which is focused on industry-based, applied research and development. Due to the advance of technologies and the increase of their use around the world, it shows a need to include them in education, as tools that could help the current teaching methods. Taking into account that most English classes in Brazilian public schools have been happening in the same way for many years, and considering the importance of learning a foreign language in this new technological world scenario, the objective of this study, that is part of a Master Degree dissertation, is to understand the perception of Brazilian English teachers in relation to the use of games and digital technologies, in the practice of face to face and remote language teaching classes, in different educational environments. Based on the participation of English teachers in the research stages, it is possible to explore their experiences and points of view, directly related to the English teaching and the use of technologies and digital games. This research collected information through a focus group research method. In this way, it was possible to verify that teachers, together with technologies and digital games, are very important in the classroom and those are extremely important tools to be used in teaching, including English. It was also noticed that keeping learning and qualifications are very important for the updating and practice of teaching. In addition, it was possible to conclude that, through the planning of activities, visualizing the right moment to insert digital games and technologies in their classes, teachers have support tools in these, which will help to engage and motivate students in learning a new language. The research presents the objective of analyzing the challenges and potentialities of teaching with the use of m-learning, in literacy classes during remote teaching caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, based on learning results regarding the appropriation of the writing system alphabetical. In view of the constant social and educational changes caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, in which social isolation became a security measure imposed to reduce the circulation of the virus, they led to the reconfiguration of educational spaces and the adoption of strategies for the continuation of formal education, as an alternative, emergency remote teaching was adopted. Remote teaching has driven changes in education, such as the use of mobile and wireless technologies, cell phones, tablets and notebooks, m-learning, to facilitate the teaching-learning process. A bibliometric review was carried out in order to study and explore the phenomenon with the identification of relevant scientific publications, which were obtained by applying quality and approach evaluation criteria, which showed scientific interest in m-learning and remote teaching. This is a qualitative research on the challenges and potential of using mobile learning with Brazilian children in literacy classes and is configured as an ethnographic case study. The locus of the research were two classes of the 1st year of Elementary School in a public school of the State Department of Education of the Federal District - SEEDF, Brazil, Brasília, Federal District, with a temporal cut of the 1st semester of 2021, having as research subjects 26 children of approximately 6 and 7 years old. The results indicate that despite the challenges faced, the data presented reveal that activities mediated by educational tools such as Google Classroom, Google Meet and the use of student interaction platforms such as the use of digital games and presentation of videos, music and stories interactive activities, among many other factors, demonstrates the potential of m-learning, with the appropriate interventions and pedagogical mediations, however, it is worth noting that access to the online teaching-learning process is still worrying, due to the difficulty of students accessing the internet and the lack of technological devices to monitor the educational proposals, such as computers or smartphones, and the formative weaknesses in relation to the use of TDIC's, therefore, teaching mediated by m-learning, can be considered as a modality of high potential, among other factors, if it is accessible to all. The intention of the present paper is to show that people have a series of educational needs in the era of information, so that they can become competent digital citizens. These educational needs are evident in the policies promoted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, which were well known to Latin American governments of the decades from the 1960s to the 1990s. Therefore, it is to be hoped that the educational reforms of 1990s have elements based on the principles of education that they advanced, which emphasises the preparation of subjects in the digital era, based on advances in information and communication technology, focusing on the teaching and learning of computer science. This paper addresses whether and how mechanisms to capture value from innovation interact in fragile conditions of appropriability. In addition, this research investigates whether these interactions (if any) are responsive to changes in the institutional environment. In order to explore these issues, the empirical analysis of the paper is based on responses to the second and fourth rounds of the Brazilian Industrial Survey of Technological Innovation (Pintec), and is carried out by means of an econometric framework where the decision to use formal and informal appropriability mechanisms is jointly modelled. The evidence shows that complementarities emerge even if the business environment is not welcoming to the enforcement of property rights. Moreover, the estimation results indicate that changes in the institutional environment that aim at fostering innovation modify how secrecy interacts with patents - from complementarity to independence, and how lead-time advantage interacts with complexity - from independence to complementarity.
