This study traces the evolution of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) through published Research Articles (RAs) in four major journals: "ReCALL," "CALL," "Language Learning & Technology (LL&T)," and "CALICO Journal." The paper outlines the rationale and the methodology of this, which begins with downloading all 2,397 full RAs published in English, from the very first issues up to the end of 2019. This preliminary report already gives an overview of the history of the field; in particular, the increasing number of papers attests to the healthy state of research in CALL. Subsequent analysis focuses on a subcorpus of 426 papers chosen by the frequency of citation in each year as a gauge of impact within the community. The final analysis will use computer tools to help identify methodologies, themes, and theories as they rise and fall over the years. The world of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) is dominated by English, and to a lesser extent, French, Spanish, and German. While these languages are the main focus of EUROCALL conferences, there has always been a presence of Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTLs) at these conferences. Most of the official languages of the EU and European languages more generally have been discussed by CALL researchers at EUROCALL conferences, but some languages have yet to make an appearance. There have also been presentations on other LCLTs outside of Europe, including Mandarin, Arabic, Japanese, and less widely spoken languages such as Thai and Nahuatl. This paper looks at the presence of LCTLs at EUROCALL conferences since 1993 and reflects on what has changed over the years. It notes the importance of the conference location on the languages discussed at the conference and the role of EU projects in supporting LCTLs. The 2017 Central States Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages was held at the Palmer House Hilton in downtown Chicago. The theme focused on moving students from knowing about the language to becoming proficient in the language. The conference boasted 328 sessions and workshops. This report contains conference articles that focus on developing proficiency from PK-16. Topics include the promotion and assessment of performance and proficiency in a variety of contexts, and through the use of multiple technologies. Articles also explore the possibilities that exist for intercultural understanding, community engagement, and advocacy for language learning.

The 2016 Central States Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (CSC), a joint conference with the Ohio Foreign Language Association, focused on fostering language and culture connections within and outside the language classroom and across the curriculum at all levels. A variety of approaches aimed at improving skills in language, literacy, and critical thinking were highlighted in order to engage students and prepare them for global citizenship in the 21st century. This 2016 report entitled "Fostering Connections, Empowering Communities, Celebrating the World," contains 12 articles that focus on fostering connections between and among language students and teachers, language, culture and content, the language classroom and the world and between K-12 and higher education. Through the integration of meaningful curricula, engaging learning tasks, media and technology, authentic materials, and cultural products in the language classroom, teachers can connect their language classrooms with the authentic lives of their learners. All of these articles underscore the important role of connecting learners with the target language and culture through a variety of means aimed at improving language skills, knowledge and attitudes of language learners in order to prepare them for global citizenship in the 21st century.

The 2008 Central States Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages focused on learning about the diverse backgrounds and needs of today's students. The 2009 Conference continued that focus and added diversity by instructors in using a variety of teaching methods, strategies, themes, technologies, and assessments. Presenters from all 17 states that make up the Central States Conference offered a diverse program, including "Best of…" sessions selected by their respective states. "All-Star" 2008 sessions chosen by the Central States Conference Board were invited to share their expertise again with 2009 conference attendees. There were workshops and sessions for language professionals at all levels and languages. This year's volume offers a varied set of articles representing some of the best practices and innovations in language teaching and learning. Topics range from technology to travel, and should offer something of interest to all members of the readership.

There exists a power asymmetry between instructors and students in the physical classroom and other learning spaces which symbolizes the distribution of power in social spaces. Because of the structured power asymmetry in most learning spaces, promoting effective classroom teaching sometimes requires instructors to replace existing hierarchical power relations and with fluid, organic, and transgressive classroom dynamics in their relationships with their students. This approach has the potential to empower students to become their own agency for interrogating the assumptions and ideologies that they bring to the classroom. This paper outlines the instructional strategies that I incorporate in my "nonwestern" course that aims to introduce students in my university to the sub-Saharan African region. The course uses the interdisciplinary approach to explore the complicated ways history and social changes (including globalization) intersect to shape education reforms, and economic and social development in sub-Saharan Africa. Students bring a plethora of assumptions about sub-Saharan "Africa" to this course and my goal as an instructor is to help students interrogate their own assumptions and deconstruct the myths and distortions about the "Africa" in a broader term. The paper outlines the way I deliberately select course materials, and sequence course contents and themes to scaffold and promote incremental knowledge about the region for students during the semester. Furthermore, the paper outlines the strategies that help nudge students' critical thinking and restructure the power relations in the classroom. While these strategies may not automatically change students' assumptions about sub-Saharan "Africa", they nonetheless become opportunities for my students and I to reposition for effective discussions about the region with the goal to interrogating students' prior assumptions and views about the region. Technological revolution has continued to permeate all aspects of society. Its roles and impacts cannot therefore be overemphasized. Nevertheless, the roles of technology in law practice and law education in Nigeria have not received considerate research attention. The aim of this paper is to fill this gap by examining law practice and education in the context of the roles technology plays. The doctrinal research method was adopted. The paper found that Section 1 of the Act established the Council of Legal Education and vests it with the responsibility for the legal education of persons seeking to become members of the legal profession. The role of technology in law practice includes documentation of client's instructions, case management, file management, personnel data management and the documentation of accounts of the law firm, research, filing of court processes and virtual court sittings. Similarly, technology plays important roles in law education including research and teaching aids. However, the integration of technology faces several challenges such as inadequate regulatory framework, inadequate infrastructure, lack of funds and technological illiteracy. The paper concluded that addressing the challenges will be critical to enhancing and expanding the roles of technology in law practice and education and that without a strategic long term approach, the roles of technology in law practice and education in Nigeria will remain very insignificant and slow to sustainable growth. Eponymous terms play an important role in STEM education. This research focuses on the current state of Mendeleev eponyms in the context of education and ethnocentrism, addressing their usage in various languages, their educational value, cases of questioned priority and copyright violation in Mendeleev major eponyms--periodic table and periodic system. 106 chemistry textbooks in 4 languages including Soviet-time and current Russian textbooks were perused to identify and trace Mendeleev eponyms over 1924-2016. Advanced Google Search with queries in Belarusian, English, Latvian, Polish, Russian, and Ukrainian was conducted to evaluate online presence of eponyms "Mendeleev periodic table" and "Mendeleev periodic system." It was found that while Mendeleev eponyms occur generously on the Internet, periodic table and system with Mendeleev's name attached are seldom used on non-Russian webpages. Most Mendeleev eponyms were made up in the USSR and remain popular and Russia, which can be explained within the framework of ethnocentrism as a ruling tendency. Recognizing Mendeleev's priority, Flinn and Ross's periodic systems can be considered plagiarized; a few factors might favor their emergence, but ethnocentrism is unlikely to be one of them. Mendeleev eponyms remain valuable assets for science education, acting as shortcuts to the history of science and actualizing interdisciplinary connections. [For the full proceedings, see ED629086.]

Recent research emphasizes the need for a more sustained interaction of schools with universities and research institutions. For example, informal after-school programs integrated into the school curriculum can provide opportunities for meaningful interaction with researchers in active learning settings. At the physics department of University of Calabria it has been launched in 2016 a program aimed at recovering disused, and in several cases ancient, instrumentation in laboratories of some schools in the region of Calabria. In 2022, our local project merged into Lab2go, a national project of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) (Lab2go; https://web.infn.it/lab2go/) and of University of Rome "La Sapienza" devoted to the enrichment of the laboratory activities of the schools. Lab2go involves a steadily increasing number of schools and has expanded to include chemistry, robotics and other subjects. This contribution discusses some didactic activities developed within Lab2go. The activities of Lab2go are integrated and form part of the (formal) school curriculum as work based experiences, which have become mandatory during the last three years of secondary schools. Thus, this project is an example of how specific policy interventions can lead to the kind of long-term structured collaboration between schools and research institutions needed to favor the shift of focus in science education. For more than 20 years, traditional medicine of Mexico, the U.S. Southwest and other countries has been taught as a series of academic course at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque in the United States. These courses focus on traditional uses of healing plants and rituals for students in higher education and the community. These courses discuss the incorporation of diverse Hispanic and Indigenous ancestral methods of healing based on experiential learning through a series of traditional medicine classes offered at the University of New Mexico. This pedagogy is a unique approach to the reclaiming of ancestral perspectives into the university curriculum that have an enduring impact in the students enrolled in these courses. This article provides a definition of "curanderismo" and mentions three major historical figures that have impacted traditional medicine in Mexico and the United States. The article also discusses the impact that these classes have on the diverse students at a Hispanic-Serving, Level I Research American university. Finally, we discuss the development of these courses in the university system and how a program has been created that also allows community members and staff in diverse health professions to enroll in the summer face-to-face institute through the Center for Continuing Education. There is a long-standing interrelationship between the military and medical spheres in society. Military actions rely on medical services to tend to casualties, and medical advances often come from the pressure of military campaigns that generate large numbers of patients. That interrelationship is a linear one of simple paired interaction. However, there is a deeper and more subtle relationship that influences military and medical theory. Both disciplines are schools of applied philosophy; real world result is required for the philosophical principles and theoretical approaches to be validated and maintained. Ornate intellectual edifice, which cannot produce a quantifiable result, is unacceptable in both these disciplines. As such there is a cognate type of intellectual discourse that involves observation, supposition, abstraction to principle, manipulation of principle, application, and evaluation of result. This process differs from abstract philosophy wherein the application, efficacy and assessment are often couched in qualitative and unclear parameters, which belie an accurate summation of result. This paper seeks to explore the relationship of the military and medical traditions of China, through a structured comparison of the intellectual framework of these two systems of applied philosophy. By exploring the medical and military conceptualizations of space and boundary, and the cognate vocabulary used in these two traditions, a better understanding of the deep structure of the core rubrics within the systems can be derived. Further, through comparative evaluation of source texts I will examine the parallelisms and dissonances of the views of space, boundary, power, and strategy. Continuing art activities in art try to undertake a different mission. It is very valuable and important for individuals who receive Art Education to be able to say I am in art activities. Because of the spread of art and the understanding that it is a value on its own, the exhibitions provide a lot of benefits to the field in terms of accepting that it is an original method of expression. The importance of those who are enthusiastic to see many good works together, the pride and determination have given to them if they have been exhibited, raising the standards of aesthetic perception with the psychology of competition and increasing their interest in the field are important situations. In the field of deep-rooted competitive exhibitions, the links of the chain can be seen year by year and a social memory of art can be created. The fact that it is not possible to collect artistically qualified works that have achieved certain standards from a historical perspective is important. In addition, if the historical development and perspective of social memory from an artistic point of view are to be mentioned, it will be better understood why similar activities are important. Math classes do not usually offer students an opportunity to learn about the diversity within the field of mathematics. As a result, students tend to hold inaccurate, negative perspectives about diversity in the world of mathematics and many may not feel a sense of belonging in the classroom when they do not see themselves reflected in the curriculum. The relationship between history and mathematics should be explored as one way to correct inaccurate views about what defines a mathematician and what the benefits are of studying mathematics and its relevance in daily life. One of the teaching practices that can support diversity and inclusion in the mathematics classroom is exposing students to a diverse group of mathematicians. In this study, we investigated the effects of using this teaching practice on creating an inclusive classroom. The participants in this study were 36 undergraduate students enrolled in a Precalculus course. Data were collected using a pre- and post-test tool and analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. An in-depth analysis through close comparisons between students' responses in the pre and post-tests. The results indicated that participants gained a new knowledge from the treatment (the historical projects) that expanded their horizons about mathematics diversity. The research seeks to collaborate to advance the debate on the intertwining between Ancestry, History, and Environmental Education. It analyzes the pedagogical experience developed by the authors in the project "Young Environmental Guardians from Riverside Communities", which takes place in the Brazilian Amazon. The project's purpose is to reinforce the youth's commitment to the Amazon and the riverside territories, reaffirming the principles of the defense of life, "buen vivir," and socio-environmental justice. The article narrates the project's meetings, their objective and subjective aspects, in conjunction with a critical view of the History of the Amazon. It is argued that the recognition of Ancestry can pedagogically contribute to reestablishing the links of collectivity towards a more equal society and healthy environment.

This paper examines the potential causes of gender exclusion and the tension women face within the military today by drawing upon Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) to examine the interaction of mediating tools within the military, as well as cultural and historical factors, that inhibit gender inclusivity. Using this theory, contradictive elements within the activity system of gender inclusivity will emerge to spotlight areas of future research into women's activity in the military and the role they play as an underrepresented part of the organization. This will hopefully lead to finding areas of expansive transformation regarding how women learn and survive in the male-dominated working environment of the military. The study reported in this paper centred on the question whether the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 had any effect on the status of religion / religious education in South Africa. Although South Africa is geographically far removed from Eastern Europe, the socio-political situation in South Africa was deeply affected by the fall of the Wall, particularly by the subsequent collapse of the Soviet Union. One of the upshots of the socio-political reform in South Africa after 1994 was that religion / religious education was relegated away from the public school to the private sphere of the parental home and religious institutions. This study aims to explore seventh-grade students' understanding of negative integers as they engaged in mathematics history integrated model-eliciting activities in small groups. For this educational case study, we designed model-eliciting activities based on six design principles of the models-and-modeling perspective that incorporated history of negative integers. Both written data and video records of students were analyzed to elicit the facets of their models of negative integers. We found that students' thought that either daily life contexts or people's need drove the invention of negative integers. The findings also indicated students' reasoning on the evolvement of mathematics ideas by contribution of different culture, revealing the role of math history integration into the modeling process. Mythology tells about the character traits and relationships in human society. Topics are about tenderness, betrayal, motherhood, or the courage of love. In the visual arts, the mythological genre was formed in the Middle Ages; He painted legends and traditions. Images of ancient heroes and gods appeared in the pre-Christian period and occupied an important place in the works of Renaissance artists. In the 18th century, mythological scenes became part of the national ideology and began to have social and political overtones. Depicting generals and rulers as ancient gods, artists conveyed state events through "Heavenly" battle or genre scenes. At the center of the mythological scene are gods, heroes of fairy tales and legends, fairy creatures and fictional historical characters. The artist pays great attention to image perspective and volume to give the viewer a realistic impression of what is going on. A large number of vivid images, attention to detail, rich and dynamic subject matter, an abundance of nudity distinguish this type of painting. Using the play of light and shadow, bright tones and deep contrast, painters brought their subjects to the fore, created image depth and increased the effect of the canvas on the audience. In this article, based on the stories of mythological characters, the connections between mythology and the art of painting are explained, the use of mythological elements in the art of painting and its transformation into the art of painting are exemplified. There are forms identified with the field in ceramic art. Examples of these are bowls, vases, plates and teapots. As works of art, these containers can be the expression language of the artists. In particular, many ceramic bowls and teapots have entered the literature with successful examples. The fact that the teapot form is used by many artists in the field of ceramics, which is a branch of plastic arts, is a richness of today's contemporary art. The ability of industrially produced containers to be good designs depends on carrying the design elements on themselves. The teapot forms, which are the continuation of an ancient heritage and produced in today's ceramics, are also followed carefully by artists and art lovers. In this study, a brief history of the teapot form is given. After this short history of the teapot, which spread from China to Europe, ceramic teapots were tried to be interpreted as a functional and plastic form through personal applications. Most people might see graffiti and street art as two similar art forms. They decorate the buildings and walls of city streets. There is some truth in making this assumption. Both are forms of creative expression found on walls and other parts of the city. However, there are some notable differences between the two. The most well-known difference is that graffiti is illegal. Street art has a history of approval to improve and revitalize areas of the town or city. Well-known artists are often asked to put together these works of art. Street artists willingly sign their works with their own names. Graffiti artists remain anonymous and hide behind tags or work in groups to make illegal art expressions. Graffiti and street art are among the contemporary art genres and can be seen side by side in the same environment. Culture draws attention as the whole of life activities organized in certain periods of humanity with social values, norms and relations. Culture, as the whole of these life activities specific to each period and society that is in a constant state of being, changing, develops with the norms and values that are accepted as the common acceptance of the majority in some similar societies and forms the current culture, while at the same time completing its structure with cultural subcultures with their own distinctive styles. This research deals with a possible use of history of mathematics in mathematics education. In particular, history can be a fundamental element for the introduction of the concept of integral through a problem-centred and intuitive approach. Therefore, what follows is dedicated to the teaching of mathematics in the last years of secondary schools, where infinitesimal calculus is addressed. The thesis here proposed is that the resort to Archimedes' use of exhaustion method and to Newton's initial lemmas expounded in his Principia Mathematica are useful means to reach a genetic comprehension of the concept of integral. Hence, two demonstrations by Archimedes and two lemmas by Newton are used to prove such thesis. At present, in the literature that is are devoted to social life, it has become commonplace to claim that we live in the era of the "digital revolution". Our paper deals with computer science in the period from the late 40's to early 60's of the twentieth century, which is considered from the point of view of "intellectual history". We concern ourselves with, in the main, two problems. First is self-consciousness of members of the computer science community in relation to other spheres of scientific and engineering-practical activity, including the question about the correlation of theoretical and applied components in the structure of the knowledge. Secondly, we tell about interactions of a new sphere of professional activity have been occurred in this period with various social practices - scientific, industrial, political and so on. In recent years, major schools of architecture have considered that teaching architectural history has become obsolete, for it could not possibly respond to the crisis our contemporary buildings and cities are facing, a crisis that derives, as increasing research demonstrates, from breaking apart architecture from its user, the human being. Architectural history represents, simplistically expressed, the account of centuries of interaction between human beings and the spaces they created. This paper will present a novel pedagogical methodology that uses a phenomenological approach in teaching the history of architecture, its purpose being to progressively and intuitively help students realize spatial perception is not a high abstraction, a complicated notion, but an objective biopsychological human feature they can access at any time and use to feel, understand and create spaces that will become places imbued with meaning. Contemporary architectural pedagogy is preponderantly focused on cultivating spatial intelligence through a series of conceptual studio projects and theoretical courses dealing mainly with abstract notions. Even architectural phenomenology, when and where it is taught, remains at a theoretical level. Pedagogy focused on conceptual architecture creates architects with highly skilled aptitudes to produce only geometrically feasible and sound spaces, spaces that are not necessarily places to be inhabited in the sense Husserl, Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, Norberg-Schulz, Alvar Aalto, Juhani Pallasmaa, Tadao Ando or Kengo Kuma would have meant them to be. In such a conceptually-driven studio culture, using historical architectural precedents, analyzing them and extracting the essential, objective and unchanging principles they hold, and using those principles discovered though analysis in joint studio projects, has proved to offer interesting and unexpected benefits in students' ability to sense space, to understand the inherent qualities of various types of spaces and to subsequently make use of the acquired spatial experience in their projects, the results being architectural places, not just architectural spaces. Though studying the different ways in which physical spaces have been artfully created and used, programmatically speaking, throughout the history of architecture, students are given the opportunity to understand how those spaces and their interrelations objectively affect humans as conscious beings, regardless of the culture they come from or the language they speak, and offer them a deeper understanding of the spatial "alphabet" some architects write dry prose with, while others create profound, meaningful poetry. Transformation of post-socialist educational systems is perhaps one of the most interesting and at the same time underestimated in its importance, developments in the history of comparative education. After the three decades of post-socialist development one can note significant differences between the countries which once had identical or very similar educational systems. Perhaps the most interesting topic for comparativists to explore is the question: why instead of convergence do we observe the increasing divergence of education in the post-socialist area? One of the possible answers is that post-socialist countries perceived the new ideology, namely, the ideology of neoliberalism, in their own specific way, which was determined by their historical, cultural and religious heritage. The concepts of effectiveness and efficiency in education can be considered as one of the typical cases of recontextualization. The article is devoted to the study of the experience of using the capabilities of Digital Humanities in the preparation of research projects in history. In particular, the article reveals the methodology for using a complex of areas of information computer technologies when working with sources, on the example of studying Russian Theosophical Journalism of Emigration of 1920s-1930s, which can be used when studying other topics by students of humanitarian orientation. The teacher can teach students to use information technology in different ways. First, get acquainted with the databases of archives and electronic libraries. Modern capabilities allow you to remotely analyze the catalogs of emigrant publications. Secondly, the researcher has access in a number of cases to already digitized sources in databases, for example, in the Consolidated Catalog of Periodicals of the Russian Emigration - Emigrantika (http://www.emigrantica.ru/), getting acquainted not only with the text, but also visual information. Thirdly, Digital Humanities allow using a variety of tools for interpreting texts, in particular, programs for creating author's databases with the introduction of hypertext, programs for conducting content analysis. It is these components that allow us to conclude that modern information computer technologies are increasingly allowing historians to conduct a source study of electronic resources, interpret the received primary data, and in the future create more and more advanced distributed systems. Acquaintance of students with the models of work of researchers using the capabilities of Digital Humanities should also contribute to the more active implementation of modern methods of working with various types of information contained in historical sources. This paper explains the concepts of Affirmative Action (AA) and Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) and the policies developed in post-Apartheid South Africa. It compares it to similar policies adopted in different contexts in Malaysia, India and the U.S.A. It explains and critiques the South African policies on AA and BEE, its history since 1994 and how class has replaced race as the determinant of who succeeds in education and the workplace. It analyses why these policies were essential to address the massive racial divide in education and the workplace at the arrival of democracy in 1994, but also why it has been controversial and racially divisive. The strengths and limitations of these policies are juxtaposed, the way it has benefitted the black and white elites, bolstered the black middle-class but has had little success in addressing the education and job futures of poor, working class black citizens in South Africa. The views of a number of key social analysts in the field are stated to explain the moral, racial, divisive aspects of AA in relation to the international experience and how South Africa is grappling with limited success to bridge the divide between the rich and poor. After World War II, in Hungary the caretaker government formed as a result of the coalition of left-wing and bourgeois parties created the slogan 'Free state, free church'. The political power promised the churches unrestricted operation, not only in the field of religious life, but also in fulfilling various social functions. However, the consolidating left-wing made efforts to take over control right from the beginning. The left-wing forces, especially the Hungarian communist party forming the government regarded the churches to be their dangerous opponents as they had wide-ranging social influence. The left-wing has done everything to reduce the churches' far-reaching social influence. The communist party (in secret), was already busy with preparing the consolidation of monocracy. It regarded the churches as serious rivals not only ideologically, but also from the point of view of the monopolization of ruling. Churches had far-reaching social connections. They were present in almost every villages, towns, and cities. Denominational schools comprised one of the important elements of the churches' connections. Consequently, the left-wing first of all wanted to acquire church schools. The government kept explaining the public that school nationalization was implemented for the sake of progress and democracy. The communist party considered this school matter as a question of power. Left-wing forces made efforts to gain influence over society to the highest possible extent. They also wanted to control the formulation of the growing generation's thoughts and view of life. Consequently, acquiring the schools was an important step on the way of expropriating political power. Drawing upon the historical experiences of Filipinx American student and community activists in dialogue with the critical race literature, this article forwards a Filipinx Critical (FilCrit) Theory. The paper foregrounds the racial formation of Filipinx Americans framed within the complexity of global migration and the collective resistance to these interlocking processes. With this history, the paper demonstrates how FilCrit Theory can contribute to the further radicalization of anti-racist projects through theoretical linkages and social movement solidarities uniting the struggle for racial justice in the United States to anticolonial struggles in the Philippines. I conclude the paper exploring how a FilCrit Theory can be applied to link history with the future; the academy to activism; and knowledge to action.

This volume includes two sections of the 2018 NORDSCI international conference proceedings: (1) Education and Educational Research; and (2) Language and Linguistics. Education and Educational Research includes 22 papers relating to scientific topics in the full spectrum of education, including history, sociology and economy of education, educational policy, strategy and technologies. This section also covers pedagogy and special education. Language and Linguistics includes 13 papers covering scientific topics related to theoretical, literary and historical linguistics, as well as stylistics and philology.

Learning to read and write is a fundamental right. Yet official figures by the National Bureau of Statistics indicate that 38% of African adults are illiterate. This study ascertained the level of literacy of Igbo-Ora community and the effects on community development. Mixed methods of survey were applied. A questionnaire of 32 items was used to collect data and information on the literacy level and socio-economic development of the community. The instrument applied for the National Assessment of Adult Literacy as applied by the National Center for Education Statistics in one of its studies was modified and applied. It provided the basis for a measure of the literacy level of the sampled 25-year-olds and above. It measures the prose, document and quantitative types of literacy. The 750 copies of the questionnaire were randomly distributed and were returned and analysed via this framework. Additionally, three Baales were interviewed on the history and level of literacy of their parts of the community. The high level of illiteracy demonstrated has enormously affected the socio-economic development of the community. This study argues for sustainable literacy for sustainable development. It recommends that to enhance the literacy level, all governments must make logical guidelines, as well as improve funding for the relevant agencies of governments saddled with the execution of the mass literacy programme. Similarly, literacy-inclined groups and other related NGOs must increase their activities and drives to highlight the significance of literacy. Furthermore, the State Universal Basic Education Board must strengthen its efforts to ensure no child is left out of the mass literacy initiative. [For the full proceedings, see ED597456.]

What stories of the past do young Canadians tell? What impact does identity have on their ideas and ways of thinking historically? What role does schooling play in transmitting a national narrative? In this paper, we address these questions in a large-scale national study of young French Canadians' understanding of the collective past. Drawing on the notion of historical consciousness, we sought to investigate two complementary features of history learning: (1) students' narratives of national history, and (2) the impact of collective identity on their historical understanding. Instead of assessing the mastery of content knowledge, our research aimed to address a more fundamental question: how do they narrate the history of their national community?

Can different people from different regions tell the same narratives of the nation? How are these stories constructed? What role does schooling play in that story-telling process? In this paper, we address these questions in a large-scale study of young French Canadians' understanding of the collective past. Drawing on the notion of historical consciousness we sought to investigate the relationship between students' narratives/narrative structures and the forces that contribute to the transmission of a collective memory in a divided society. Our goal was to study the role of school history--and other 'historicizing forces'--on the shaping of people's historical consciousness.

Kinyarwanda, the national official language used by the population of Rwanda, was greatly affected by the tragic history that faced the country. The 13th annual national dialogue held at Kigali from 21st to 22nd December 2015, recommended the government of Rwanda, to put in place all measures to enhance and maintain the above mentioned language. This language, Kinyarwanda, holds the national identity and culture heritage values for the country, since its existence. This study proposes M-Kinyarwanda, an autonomous Mobile language learning application that will integrate multimedia techniques to teach and learn Kinyarwanda, in order to improve the efficiency in the language. The design and development of this mobile learning application will apply the prototype software development lifecycle approach, which requires more user involvement to allow them to see and interact with the prototype for better and more complete feedback and specifications. To measure the success of the developed system, evaluation will be carried out in the lab and expert-walk-through. Also, system field-testing will be conducted. We hope that M-Kinyarwanda will increase the motivation and efficiency of Kinyarwanda language learners, no matter where they are and when. [For the complete proceedings, see ED579190.]

In this article, we suggest that the history in Mathematics Education combined with mobile technology, can provide analysis of concepts, theories and significant logical structures in the process of teaching and learning of Mathematics, as the main objective of this study is to analyze the students' motivation and learning using tablets in the classroom. From a collaborative work, high school students have created applications that told a little the Mathematics' history. A private school situated in the east side of São Paulo city conducted this experiment. With the participation of 4 teachers and 107 students of the first year of the high school, we observed that the tablet generated a stimulating and challenging environment in search of mathematical historical elements to explain concepts and theories so far not questioned by students in conventional classes. The results presented in the study indicate that the use of tablets in the work development was of paramount importance not only in the motivational issue, but also in getting knowledge about some mathematical theories put in its history. The Adult Education Interview Series (AEIS) started at the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) and was inspired by the use of TED talks and other similar videos in online and distance education courses. It is a collaboration between the Adult Education and Safety Science Department and the Center for eLearning and Connected Environments at UCO. The intent of the AEIS is twofold: to preserve the history and stories of adult educators and to analyze the interviews to determine common or contradictory themes that provide insight into perspectives of professionals in the field. By understanding the perspectives of the field, we can better ascertain where the field was, is and where it might be going. An examination of past research, policies, and reforms in mathematics education suggests that there have always been, and remain, tensions in conceptualizing the aims and goals of mathematics teaching and learning. While the disproportionality and conditions of marginalized learners is a cause for concern, it is important to understand that addressing the needs of these learners may not have been the primary goal of prior policies and reforms in mathematics education. Derrick Bell, a former attorney with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) during the Civil Rights Era, employed his interest-convergence principle to explain how the United States Supreme Court issued the landmark ruling in "Brown v Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas" ("Brown I") in 1954. The Supreme Court's ruling in the "Brown" case revoked the "separate but equal" doctrine, which legally sanctioned segregation in public education and all aspects of daily life. Bell (2004) argued that the "Brown" decision was not the result of America coming to terms with its democratic ideals or moral sensibilities. Rather, the Supreme Court was more interested in providing "immediate credibility to America's struggle with communist countries to win the hearts and minds of emerging third world people" than in doing what was morally right (p. 233). "Brown" provided the impetus for legislation, such as the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) of 1965 and it reauthorizations Improving America's School Act of 1994 and No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2001 (Zion & Blanchett, 2011). These along with other legislations and mandates established requirements that address the need to ensure that all students in the United States are provided equal educational opportunities. Although not fully realized, the requirements of these legislative acts and mandates created pressure to address the historical inequity in educational opportunity, achievement, and outcomes. Zion and Blanchett (2011) argued that the reason why large scale improvement in outcomes for all students have yet to be realized is that the problem has not yet been framed appropriately. The problem must be framed as part of the history and legacy of racism, and as an issue of civil rights and social justice, viewed through a critical lens. This article use a critical lens to apply the interest-convergence principle informed largely by the work of legal scholar, Derrick Bell (1980 & 2004), to examine motivating factors of policies and reform efforts in mathematics education. Specifically, this article makes the case that policies and reforms in mathematics education were not designed to address the needs of marginalized learners; rather these policies and reforms are often designed and enacted to protect the economic, technological, and social interests of the dominant culture. This study examines international students' experiences of othering on their campuses. To achieve this goal, a case of a South Korean international student's experiences was addressed from postcolonial perspectives. In particular, this study asks: "What does a Korean international student's experiences of othering look like?" and "What is the base of a Korean international student's experiences of othering?" To achieve the purpose of this study, the concept of othering is utilized to interrogate how the participant projected othering onto her peers while simultaneously was a recipient of othering in her campus experiences. As Fine (1994) explains, othering is a co-construction of self as well as other. So, through othering, the action and process of finding differences between us and them take place while similarities within our group are also constructed. Additionally, othering is usually seen as colonizers' exclusive property. However, in this study, othering includes not only colonizers excluding the colonized, but also excluding by the colonized. This qualitative study employed a semi-structured interview. Through repetitive and reflexive reading of the interview transcript, I constructed preliminary findings. First, the participant's othering was selective based on specific contexts. She had various relationships with diverse people within different contexts. Social, economic, and political contexts where she was situated contributed to her stereotypes about others. She defined some Americans as her second family with positive impressions, but other Americans were classified with neutral or negative stereotypes. Second, the participant's historical and educational background had an impact on her othering. Her learning about Cultural Studies in a US institution influenced her focus on differences between South Koreans and Americans or other Asians, rather than understanding similarities across their nationalities. Further, her knowledge about the modern history of South Korea impacted her negative stereotypes about South Korea's education system. Through these findings, I question and complicate theories of othering based on specific contexts and backgrounds, rather than simplifying that othering is conducted only by the colonizer position. In particular, this study intends to complicate theories about othering by focusing on how international students experience othering on their campuses, especially in terms of historicization (During, 2000) and the context of education and research (Minh-Ha, 1989).

An historical case is presented in which extra-mathematical certainties lead to invalid mathematics reasonings, and this is compared to a similar case that arose in the area of virtual education. A theoretical-methodological instrument is proposed for analysis of certainties. The article focuses on the research on the most massive children's organisation of the 20th century, i.e., Vladimir Lenin All-Union Pioneer Organization, and its activities. The period of soviet pedagogy has been most actively investigated by Russian scientists, who have analysed its various phenomena, including pioneer activities, not only from historical but also from anthropological, sociological, educational, literary and other perspectives. However, the scientific discourse on the soviet pedagogy issues is relatively stagnant in the Baltic States and in Lithuania in particular. The soviet history is considered to be too 'fresh', 'painful', whereas the pioneer organisation, as one of the cogs of communist propaganda, does not deserve any attention of researchers. Applications are often useful to economic educators. For example, one economic focus is inflation. Both North and South switched from gold to paper money during the Civil War. This became a problem for both sides -- but more for the South -- when the quantity of paper money was expanded. There was simply too much money chasing too few goods, which resulted in inflation. For the scholarly field of Comparative and International Education, which uses the reconstruction of its historical evolution to define itself and to chart a trajectory for its future development, the periodisation of its history assumes special importance, more so in times when a next or nascent epoch of education needs to be factored in this stock-taking exercise of past, present and future. This paper surveys the present stock of periodisations in use in the field and found these wanting. One urgent need is that the present phase in the development of the field should be identified, named and described. Besides providing an outlook for the future development of the field, one requirement for building this construct of the present phase in the field, is that it should take cognisance of the nascent epoch in education. This paper offers a set of ideas of the main features of this epoch, in the belief that the discussions contained in the remained of the papers of this book, will contribute towards forming a clear idea of this new or nascent epoch in education and thus contribute towards gaining an intellectual hold on the present phase in the evolution of Comparative and International Education. The paper aims at a retrospective analysis of the evolution of the NATO in the context of the new security challenges that have arisen, especially in the eastern and northeastern areas of Europe, and of the factors that have substantially contributed to the strategic orientation of the political-military organization, acting both from within, as well as from without. The work follows in stages the events that had a major impact on the positioning of the Alliance in one direction or another, while remaining consistent with the principles established in the Washington Treaty.
