ABSTRACT This paper describes an innovative effort to invite the public to participate in the creation of a public resource - to leverage collective wisdom in the health domain. This project involved building a website where people could contribute their experiences of body listening and how they learned/were learning to do it. Within the context of this study, body listening was described as the act of paying attention to the body's signals and cues, which can improve individuals' long-term health management. Over the course of the study, participants and moderators together authored 431 posts and contributed 818 tags. This paper presents an initial analysis of these tags. This analysis makes several intellectual contributions. First, we present a preliminary classification scheme for concepts associated with body listening and self-management that might be used in future efforts to organize knowledge in this domain. ABSTRACT This paper presents results of a study that applies a historical bibliometric treatment on the Journal of the Siam Society in the period from 1972 to 1976, aiming to chart a life story of the Journal in such the timeframe. The research approach taken brings together quantitative and qualitative research methods to trace the historical development of a learned publication devoted to the academic studies of Thailand. The bibliometric methods examine the trend and change in the Journal's bibliographic characteristics which are viewed as the intellectual contours of the Journal. Then, these contours are contextualised and interpreted through historical research methods which primarily engage documentary evidence. The findings of the study show that both bibliometric and historical analyses complement each other, suggesting that the research design and methods are workable. ABSTRACT Participatory mapping is a promising data collection method for use in information behavior (IB) research. It provides an opportunity for participants to think spatially and critically about their community-based information practices. This methodology paper provides an example and offers some critical insights into the use and value of participatory mapping. This paper presents the findings from an online survey investigating how new students seek geospatial information in an unfamiliar environment. By surveying 149 new graduate students at University of Maryland, College Park, this study identifies the geospatial information needs and information sources used during their adjustment in new environments, and examines the factors that may affect different geospatial information behaviors (GIBs) of new students, such as populousness of students' countries of origin on campus, gender, age, and program level (Master's, PhD). Findings include (1) international students' greater emphases on survival-related geospatial information; (2) gender differences in the importance of navigational and transportation information and frequency of using navigational information sources during adjustment; (3) significant differences among socio-national and demographic groups for geospatial information needs and for the use of information sources. The findings are discussed in ways to further our understanding of new students' GIB in unfamiliar environments and inform further research in human information behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT In this paper, we present preliminary findings from an exploratory mixed-methods study of foreign-language searchers' credibility assessment of web documents when searching in English. Findings highlight a set of criteria used by these searchers to assess the credibility and accuracy of English web sources, the most frequent of which relates to source reputation. Foreign language searchers are more likely to trust an English language source if it is familiar or if it is the official source of information. Design aesthetics and functionality also have an impact on credibility. ABSTRACT This paper describes a case study investigation of a city-wide digital storytelling initiative led by two libraries and one municipal cultural department in Hamilton, Canada. Data collection involved one-on-one interviews, document review, and participant observations with governance stakeholders from the two libraries and municipal cultural department involved in the case study. Using activity theory as a conceptual framework, data were analyzed using grounded theory techniques. A variety of factors - motivations, goals, actions, tools, rules, divisions of labour, tensions and contradictions - were found to influence the implementation of the digital storytelling initiative under investigation. Importantly, activity theory provided a robust, holistic framework for understanding and describing the phenomenon of digital storytelling initiatives led by memory institutions. This paper describes a longitudinal analysis of online social networks designed for patients diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. Observational analysis of 20 indicators in three domains - practices for auditing and moderating the quality of content provided by users, accessibility of privacy policies, and data sharing policies and member control over data sharing - was conducted on 10 sites in 2013 and again on 12 sites in 2015, with 7 of the same sites included in both samples. The sites were identified using Google. Indicators for each domain were scored dichotomously. These scores were compared among sites in order to analyze their general practices and policies. Total composite scores were also analyzed to determine whether individual sites had significantly different practices and policies in comparison with the group. Finally, scores for each domain were compared across years in order to assess whether practices and policies had changed over time. Differences in site practices and policies between 2013 and 2015 were not significant, although there is much room for improvement in all domains. Quality was variable across all sites, with gaps in medical disclaimers, a lack of external review of privacy policies and data safety audits, and missing information about internal quality control in the form of moderators. Although most sites employ moderators, their credentials are not often reported. Privacy policies are inaccessible across the board, with none readable at below a twelfth-grade level. Data safety practices are also problematic, with most sites sharing user data with third parties. The quality and safety of social networks for CKD is variable, and improvement is feasible. Suggested improvements include auditing privacy policies and data safety practices, making information about moderators easily available, and third-party audits of information posted by users to ensure the removal of misinformation. In this paper, we present data findings from the pilot study focusing on utilizing content moderators from Brainly, a social learning Q&A platform, to assess the quality of answers. Because it can be argued that Brainly users who actively moderate contents may have better contextual understandings of how users interact with each other through question-answering activities, and which answers are more likely relevant and appropriate to a question in a context of Brainly. The findings indicate that helpfulness, informativeness, and relevance are the most critical factors that have impacts on the quality of answers. Further content analysis also identified two new criteria : 1) descriptiveness - evaluating how well answers provide descriptive summaries through detailed and additional information, and 2) explicitness - clearly constructing answers to reduce vagueness of what information answerers intend to provide to satisfy an asker's need. ABSTRACT In this poster we describe the Linked Open Data (LOD) for Digital Special Collections project at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and describe some of the particular challenges that legacy metadata poses for representation in LOD formats. LOD formats are primarily based on the World Wide Web Consortium's Resource Description Framework standard which demands both that entities be named by opaque universal identifiers whenever possible but also that metadata descriptions for entities be as unambiguous as possible. The challenges for disambiguating those descriptions are illustrated through examples drawn from digital special collections based at four different digital libraries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT This poster presents preliminary findings of a quasi-experiment think-aloud study where scientists were presented four canned results of information regarding earth science data in a counter-balanced design. Scientists were asked to think-aloud regarding what information about the data assisted them in their ability to determine reusability of that dataset. Sixteen scientists from various earth science fields participated in the study. Each scientist responded to four canned results, a post-result usefulness survey, a post-search rank-order survey, and a post-search survey. Participants stated that concise data descriptions, attribute and unit lists, as well as research methods steps were particularly important in their ability to determine reusability of data. Participants preferred more robust results over less robust results, and stated that they would rather have too much information than to request the data to find out it actually did not serve their needs. ABSTRACT Everyday hundreds of millions of metadata records provide users access to information. To remain functional, metadata schemas changes in response to shifts in information user needs and standards of information representation. This poster presents results of the longitudinal quantitative analysis of change occurring in a select group of library metadata records over time. This study traces the evolution of a sample of OCLC WorldCat metadata records created in MARC format according to new RDA standard of information representation. The same records were obtained at four data collection points at approximately one year intervals. Findings reveal a significant increase in the number of instances of a variety of metadata elements: both those introduced by the RDA standard and traditional pre-RDA elements. ABSTRACT As management of research data becomes increasingly important to scholars and academic institutions, academic libraries can play a major role by offering research data services (RDS). This poster presents the results of a survey of the Ligue des Bibliothèques Européennes de Recherche-Association of European Research Libraries (LIBER) academic member library directors to find out what types of RDS their libraries are currently offering and what services they plan to offer in the future. The survey found that while most of these libraries currently offer or are planning to offer at least some RDS, consultative or reference-type services are offered more often than are technical or hands-on services. Most of these libraries are in discussions regarding data policies, collaborate with other organizations within or outside their own institutions to offer RDS, and most provide support for RDS skills development for staff members. ABSTRACT We conducted a pilot study to explore refugee students' access to and use of information during the settlement process. Using arts-based elicitation and semi-structured interview techniques, we probed the information world of a refugee student studying in Canada. Our findings begin to identify the scope and variety of information sources that students consult at various stages of settlement and their utility. Our continued work in this area seeks to assist the Student Refugee Program (SRP) on our campus to advocate for and meet the information needs of refugee students by understanding what information is needed, when it is needed, and how to provide optimal access to it. In the United States' battle against sexual human trafficking, the nascent integration of criminal justice and social service agency work is severely hampered by an array of information problems, which are amenable to mitigation from Information Studies scholars. Naïve information organization and infrastructure design undermine many of these integrated projects. More critical however, is their general focus on process with little reference to supporting victims' personal agency through their required mastery of information resources. Using a systematic analysis of current scholarly research articles on sexual human trafficking, this study identified 31 research and application projects developed in reference to concrete support for government and social service agencies. For each study, analysis examines the nature of the victims' personal information agency, as well as the primary actors in each information situation. Disciplinary distinctions regarding the human rights approach to prostitution, underpin many of Information Studies' missed opportunities for contributing to agency effectiveness.
