Organization, individuals, and families in Saudi Arabia need more attention on recycling in their daily waste. The average generated daily rate of municipal solid waste is 1.72 kg per capita and the yearly kingdom waste recycling is around 15 million tons. Saudi government set a goal to reach 30million tons per year by 2033. This study examines the awareness level of paper recycling for university students in Saudi Arabia. A survey model consists of 26 measures that concentrated in attitudes, actions, and beliefs, is used. Seventy students in college of engineering at University of Jeddah responded to the survey. Moreover, barriers of adopting recycling paper in Saudi Arabia is analyzed and prioritized using Interpretive Structure Modeling (ISM) software. The findings indicates that the current state level of paper recycling awareness in Saudi Arabia is considered low, the education system does not support this issue, and there is a strong agreement that recycling for individuals and families in Saudi is not easy due to the absence of facilities such as containers and poor infrastructure. Optimization of OEE factors provides significant impact to the organization through efficient operations, cost effectiveness, gaining competitive advantage in the market and to provide sustainable supply of products. Optimization is providing sustainable solutions to the problems identified through root cause analysis through total productive maintenance or lean manufacturing methods or techniques towards the goal of zero to minimal wastage. Sustainability of Public Transport System is a hot topic that has become a rather taboo issue to be discussed in South East Asian countries like Bangkok, Thailand and Jakarta, Indonesia. Malaysia too with its high vehicle congestion also belong to this category. The respective government dilemma is whether to increase allocation for more highways or to provide more fund to build more Public Transport such as Light Rail Transit (LRT), Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) or Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). The aim of this study is to identify the determinants and challenges in ensuring sustainability of Public Transport in Kuala Lumpur and to propose policy to encourage more LRT ridership. This paper will also utilize A+ Organic Pads as a form of comparison, as a way to showcase the fact that is possible for companies to manufacture purely organic or environmentally conscious products. Construction project within construction industry is deemed as high process industry through its perspectives of reliability and quality. Therefore, misconduct of the execution in this industry plays vital role of generating wide array of accidents and diseases. On empirical perspectives and on Indonesia's Construction project the risk intertwines wide spectrum of activities and processes. To some extent, it requires improvement and decision-making strategy. Subsequently, on theoretical perspectives, the risk mitigations in construction industry have been implemented. To begin with, failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA) is deemed conventional method in proceeding vis-à-vis construction industry. Furthermore, FMEA is followed by other methods, e.g., FTA, known as fault tree analysis; ETA, identified as event tree analysis. Ultimately, there are HAZOP study, as refer to hazard and operability study, and root cause analysis. The objective of this paper is to harness the theoretical and empirical perspectives of FMEA through the lens of improvement and decision-making strategy, within Indonesia's construction project. In term of improvement strategy, FMEA contributes not only to improvement strategy but also in failure risk reprioritization within FMEA methodology. Precisely, this FMEA methodology, is using index of risk priority number, namely RPN, through trilogy of detection ability (D), occurrence (O), and severity (S). In term of decision-making strategy, FMEA contributes to lean and sustainability concept, to some options of reducing waste with goal of augmenting productivity and enhancing customer's value proposition. This paper refers to the FMEA's improvement and decision-making strategy in both theoretical and empirical perspectives within Indonesia's construction project and its relevant research methodology. Lean thinking is an essential concept that has emerged in most organizations and industries. This is due to its proven outcomes in improving the process by removing waste and delivering value to the customer. Applying lean has also benefited the process by making it more sustainable by reducing the waste that negatively affects the three pillars of sustainability (Environment, Economy, and Society). Although lean has been established as a concept to improve the manufacturing process, it has extended to cover the maintenance process with reliance on established maintenance principles like Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) and existing lean methods. This paper aims to study and analyze a preventive maintenance (PM) process of a construction company in Qatar and implement lean maintenance methods with TPM to improve the process by minimizing lean waste with a focus on improving process sustainability. The methodology has been assessed through a real case study from a construction project of the company selected. The project equipment preventive maintenance process was analyzed, sustainability indicators were identified, and lean maintenance tools were implemented. A systematic literature review was conducted to explore indicators published in peer-reviewed articles that are relevant to industrial sustainability performance measurement. A total of 1013 indicators were identified and analyzed: 277 for economic, 402 for environmental and 334 for social dimensions of industrial sustainability. The majority of the indicators were used only once, implying a lack of consistency and consensus on their application for measuring industrial sustainability, and invites an ongoing debate on how sustainability should be measured in different industry contexts. On the other hand, few indicators such as profit, research and development expenditure, product quality, revenue, material cost, labor cost, water consumption, energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, material consumption, employment/job opportunity, employee turnover and work-related injuries were consistent and frequently used for measuring industrial sustainability. The consistent indicators have been used to measure industrial sustainability performance associated with financial benefits, costs, market competitiveness, resources, emissions, wastes, employees, customers, and the community. This paper provides a comprehensive view of indicators considering the triple bottom line dimensions of sustainability. There is a growing interest in the concept of Industry 5.0 (I5.0), which supports a transition towards a more sustainable, resilient and human-oriented industrial paradigm. This paper focuses on the I5.0 sustainability pillar, which is crucial to optimize and support I5.0's data-driven and circular supply chains. In order to pursue a Sustainable Supply Chain (SSC) and improve data quality management across it, it is first imperative to understand to what extent the existing SSC quality indicators are aligned with the opportunities of the digitalization era, and if they support the path to I5.0 sustainable practices. This paper aims to do a comprehensive study and analysis of relevant groups of SSC metrics and indicators. Through a broad literature review, SSC metrics and indicators are identified. Then, they are assessed to determine if they are suitable and relevant to assist decision makers in the challenges towards SSC 5.0. Results reveal that despite growing interest in the progress of data-driven SSC in recent years, there are still research gaps, mainly concerning the standardization of indicators, the simplification of models, and the use of consistent models for the treatment and conversion of proper data into relevant information. A plethora of studies have been conducted to address sustainable product fulfillment. To facilitate the understanding, authors have published their review papers focusing on different issues, e.g., green product design approaches, decision support systems implemented in sustainable manufacturing, cross relationships between product attributes and consumer decision-making. Although these review papers potentially advance research on the respective issues or topics, an overview of the product life cycle stages in sustainable product fulfillment, which were the most frequently examined, is not seen. This study is to review the relevant literature, in attempting to identify these life cycle stages and further explore the relevant issues, such as the methodologies used, the sustainability dimensions (i.e., economic, environmental, and social) considered, and the industries involved. Based on a rigorous search and selection process, 114 papers were retained for analysis. As shown in the results, green consumption was the focus in 54 papers, thus being the most examined stage. It is unexpected to see that the end-of-life treatment stage was discussed in only 5 articles. Regarding methodologies, quantitative research was the most frequently conducted, contributing to 65 papers. While a variety of industries was involved in the 114 papers, the automotive industry was the study background in 11 papers. Although achieving sustainability from all the three dimensions is very important, most of papers (79 out of 114) considered one or a combination of two dimensions. With the results and analysis, we further shed on the prospects, obstacles, and future directions in facilitating sustainable product fulfillment from all the three dimensions of sustainability. Since what is not measured cannot be improved, the determination of a baseline helps to locate a starting point to establish further goals and best practices based on actual behavior. This paper explores and reviews the studies for fuel economy to determine the measurement and analysis methods that aim to the construction of fuel consumption and/or gas emission baselines by conducting a systematic literature review (SLR). The overview of literature published globally in the last ten years shows hardly any research focused on HDVs, as well as few investigations reporting gross and load weight values. Studies committed to measuring fuel consumption and/or gas emissions show small sample sizes due to limitations in scope related to the methods used, explaining the tendency to make estimates through statistical and estimation tools. Furthermore, it is important to emphasize that by abounding in the methods and the literature itself, the recent interest in expanding the sample sizes in line with the precision of the data, has presented new techniques for the measurement and estimation. Supply Chain Management (SCM) cannot distance itself from seeking both sustainability and resilience to deal with consecutive change. To achieve this objective, SCM has seen the adoption of digital technologies as a decisive tool to face challenges, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine. These disruptions guide SC managers to search for new opportunities and strategies that impact them in the short and long term. The terms “supply chain sustainability” and “supply chain resilience” have been well explored in literature as independent terms, but there is a lack of studies on their combination, especially in the digital field. This paper aims to explore the extant literature focused on the adoption of digital technologies that contribute to the development of sustainable and resilient SCs, recurring to a systematic literature review. The objective is to identify the trade-offs and the synergies that characterize the relationship between technological-enabled practices for sustainability and resilience. The database used was Scopus and the formulated query resulted from de author’s discussion including words related to supply chain, sustainability, resilience, and digital technologies. Only articles published in journals and in English were considered, and there was no restriction regarding the date of publication. The first search presented a total of 136 articles (March 2023). The selection was performed in two stages: (1) reading the abstracts and keywords of all papers; (2) full reading of the papers selected in the first stage. After the first analysis (step 1), we selected 63 articles. After step 2, 42 papers that address the relationship between digital technologies and sustainability and resilience were kept. The results showed an increase in the production of papers approaching the themes, possibly (at least in part) due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the pressure that competition provokes on the stakeholders. The technologies majorly identified are related to Blockchain, Additive Manufacturing, Big Data, and the Internet of Things as means to achieve SCs with higher levels of resilience and sustainability, being also identified papers that approach the terms “industry 4.0” and “industry 5.0”. The main fields where papers have been conducted are food supply chain, agriculture, and automotive industries because of the traceability capabilities of most technologies. These findings lead to the conclusion that these technologies are the ones with the potential to change organizations and research is focusing on the initial links of SC. According to the quantitative analysis, 2022 was the year when more articles were published in the journals Operations Management Research, Annals of Operations Research, and Production Planning and Control as the ones that published more. Most papers focused on the utilization of one technology and do not identify a specific theory. We conclude that there is crescent interest in this topic and a lack of theoretical support. This study contributes to increasing the body of knowledge related to digital technologies in SCs that simultaneously contributes to achieving resilience and sustainability in those SCs. This applied research paper reports efforts of engineering technology faculty and students to design and build a sustainable charging station that is fully sponsored by an energy services company. The objective of this project is to install a 33.6 kW solar array on Sam Houston State University’s (SHSU) campus and connect it to a university owned substation by a 50 kW capacity grid-tie inverter. A Charge-Point Express 250 DC fast charger will also be installed on the SHSU campus near the PhotoVoltaics (PV) array to charge electric vehicles (EV). The project also includes an outdoor educational display describing how the system operates, and offsets carbon emissions providing environmental savings on campus. The project provides a multitude of benefits by placing an EV fast charger on campus with it being convenient for the citizens of Huntsville, TX and electric vehicle drivers that are traveling between Houston and Dallas, TX. It will also showcase to the SHSU community the increasing importance of renewable energy resources and display an example of how clean power is generated. We are promoting more sustainable operations of the university using renewable energy systems by designing a unique PV based EV fast-charging station due to lack of locations where EV owners can charge their vehicles. It will also introduce a cleaner form of energy that will help reduce the overall cost of the charger. The initial requirement of the project was to install 120 PV panels with a total capacity of 50 kW. In the 21st century, the automotive industry is witnessing a significant shift as it transitions from Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles to Electric Vehicles (EVs). This transformative wave, fueled by increasing environmental concerns and advances in technology, calls for an in-depth analysis of the potential nexus for sustainability. This paper explores how the integration of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) in electric vehicles (EVs) has the prospects to meet sustainability. We have followed the exploratory research and secondary literature review based on selected indicators that will make a nexus and ensure to meet the EVs sustainability. We have found key challenges and new possibilities of both electric vehicles and ADAS that need to address while the reconciliation of electric vehicle and ADAS go on which can impact potentially on different dimensions and aspects of the sustainability of electric vehicle. By Analyzing the analytical framework of ADAS in EVs, this paper also aims to give insights into the possibilities and limitations of increasing EVs' sustainability, including overall sustainability and the environmental benefits caused by EVs. In light of these findings, we recommend strategic modifications to state-of-the-art technologies and key indicators to maximize sustainability outcomes. The increasing customer’s environmental conscientious, the strict environmental regulations and the need to keep market competitiveness, is pressuring organizations to reduce their environmental impacts. Hence, organizations are looking for new approaches to achieve sustainability. Several studies discuss the relation between Lean and Green Manufacturing approaches not only to reach Leaner results but also to decrease the environmental footprint of organizations. However, most researchers evaluate the global impact of Lean Manufacturing tools, and so their individual impact is lost. To overcome this gap, this work presents a comparative study of the Kanban system’s environmental impacts, evaluating Green KPIs, such as, Energy usage, Material usage, Water usage, Waste, and Air and Water pollution. The analyzed papers showed a positive impact related to the Energy usage, Material usage and Waste, when Kanban and its related practices are applied. Regarding Water usage and pollution, the findings are very scarce. Additionally, the results show that Air Pollution is the most controversial Green KPI. This comparative study allows for a global view on Kanban’s environmental impacts to prevent them in advance. The Earth, a complex and interconnected system, faces an imminent threat from climate change, exacerbated by escalating carbon emissions. The Philippines addressed air quality concerns with the Clean Air Act of 1999, emphasizing mobile sources like vehicles. This paper proposed a catalytic converter prototype incorporating zeolite to assess its efficiency in reducing carbon emissions. Employing an experimental approach, the study utilizes t-tests as a statistical tool to compare carbon emissions between vehicles with and without the zeolite-based catalytic converter and value analysis and value engineering to optimize the production process and reduce costs. Based on the obtained results, "Z-Lite" is a profitable alternative exhaust filter for diesel engines, showcasing its potential to reduce carbon emissions significantly. The statistical analysis, yielding a low p-value, supports the hypothesis that zeolite filters effectively reduce carbon emissions. With over 100 emission centers in the Philippines, the marketability of ZLite in Marikina City underscores its practicality in addressing environmental concerns and promoting sustainable practices in the transportation industry. The integration of value analysis and value engineering ensures that it is both environmentally friendly and affordable, making it a promising and sustainable choice for mitigating the environmental impact of diesel engine emissions. The element of leadership, employee productivity and sustainability seem to share significant value within an organization, however the question that is left unanswered is how then leadership has an impact on employee productivity and sustainability. This paper seeks to explore the impact of leadership on employee productivity and sustainability within an organization. A quantitative methodological approach was selected for this study to comprehend the impact that leadership has on employee productivity and sustainability. A questionnaire consisting of three sections was distributed to middle and lower ranking workers at an organization in South Africa. The result from the study clearly indicates that leadership has a philosophical impact on employee productivity. The adaptation of a transformational leadership style by the leader with attributes such as intellectual inspiration, personalized consideration, idealized influence, and motivation stimulate positive outcomes from a worker, which results in achievement of desirable outcome. This leadership style effectively creates a positive working environment for workers to foster productivity and contribute to long-term success of the organization. Major fast fashion companies have recently launched resale platforms for second-hand shopping. Although many experts consider these initiatives as a greenwashing strategy, it is unclear whether consumers agree with that or rather find such initiatives sustainable. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to examine consumer attitudes towards the sustainability of second-hand fast fashion. Accordingly, Instagram reels and posts related to second-hand fast fashion are identified and all comments under those contents are extracted. Next, these comments are analysed with a sentiment analysis and a content analysis. Results show that consumers express more positive sentiments towards resale companies that ban fast fashion items than towards resale companies that specialize in fast fashion. Comments referring to companies banning fast fashion resale show consumers' predominant support of the ban, while companies doing fast fashion resale receive strong criticism on social media. Consumers are specifically concerned about the quality of second-hand fast fashion items as well as express social and ethical concerns towards fast-fashion resale. Recent events unveiled that it has become eminent to understand the wide dimensions of the supply chains disturbance and how to mitigate its effect on the performance. The complexity of globally stretched supply chains of different products and specifically agricultural food supply chains have increased the sensitivity of the performance if any disturbances occur. This paper reviews the literature from 2017 concerned with resilience in supply chains and agro food supply chains, with the aim of building a complete understanding of the methods and strategies to deal with disruptions. The review classifies the risks, decision variables, and objectives (with a deeper look on resilience and sustainability measures) considered for both general and agro food supply chains to reach a conclusion on the most appropriate strategies. The different model types are addressed together with the appropriate solution techniques to reach an optimum performance for the model. We identified the research gaps and highlighted the different research paths that are scarce in literature. The results show the dearth in research on agro food supply chains and application of the models on real case studies. Sustainability is rarely addressed and linked with resilience. The strategies and approaches to appropriate and effective adoption and implementation of SDGs, particularly in cities of the developing world, have not been well documented. Consequently, this paper examines the strategies and approaches of implementing SDG-11 towards the attainment of urban sustainability in the city of Ekurhuleni. The paper bestows the escapade of the approaches and strategies for the implementation of SDG-11, though data which was collected by means of interviews with officials and relevant stakeholders in the City of Ekurhuleni and through observations. The results of the study divulge that the City of Ekurhuleni has sufficient policies, legislative frameworks, and strategies to implement SDG-11.
