Sub-Saharan African societies had contacts with China that stretch back to the early days of the Silk Road where the two regions facilitated trade relations and exchanged technology and ideas. Beginning in the 1950s China formalized relations with SSA based on South-South cooperation. At the end of the Cold War, China intensified its relations with SSA within the frameworks of "One Belt one Road" in Africa and the Forum for China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). The China-Africa relations have scored benefits in the areas of promoting infrastructural development, strong investments in SSA, trade links between the two regions, less expensive technical assistance for nations in SSA, cultural exchanges, and student scholarships. Nonetheless, the relations raise complicated issues around trade where China is flooding markets in SSA with inferior goods, acquisition of resources, Chinese mining companies causing environmental destruction in many countries in SSA, and the Chinese government's debt trapping of many sub-Saharan African nations. Many suspect that China is surreptitiously forging a relationship with SSA that may help it assert its "trusteeship" over sub-Saharan Africa's political, economic, and development processes. The paper is developed within these broader contexts to examine the paradoxes and contradictions of the China-sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) relations and their potential impacts on education policy and practice in the region. The paper focuses on SSA, a region that constitutes forty-eight of the fifty-four countries of the African continent. This sociohistorical paper is part of my ongoing study to examine the impacts of external forces' economic and political relations on education policy and practice in the SSA and the potential of the relations to destabilize the epistemological processes of sub-Saharan African societies. This paper reflects on research methodological considerations of how legitimacy of publicly funded universities occurs. From an ecocritical ontological perspective the paper uses a metaphor and sense-making techniques to shed light into effective modalities universities use to connect with local economies. The Milky way Galactic ecosystem metaphor is used not only to make sense of the ecocritical ontological stance taken to make sense of legitimacy but is used as a metaphor to make sense of the findings. The paper asserts that the legitimacy theoretical lens is particularly appropriate to probe universities' legitimacy and connectedness to the local communities they are embedded in. The rationale behind this assertion is that legitimacy is only conferred to the extent the actions of an entity are perceived as desirable, efficient, proper, or appropriate by the ecosystem stakeholders. The theory is thus useful for examining connectedness of publicly funded universities to its local community. The paper argues that the university system that is delinked from local economic development is like a Milky way Galaxy delinked from its Galactic ecosystem. Against this backdrop, the paper juxtaposes Mondragon University, located in a rural part of Northern Spain with two South African universities embedded in poverty stricken rural South Africa. Mondragon University is presented as a hallmark of success when it comes to local community legitimacy. The paper is centered around the following question: (1) how does university legitimacy yield impactful local community outcomes? Using the Milky way Galaxy metaphor, the findings show a considerable variety in local community connectedness depending on bureaucratic arrangements of the universities. The findings also showed that alternative income sources, outside the public purse, just like the gravitational force in the galactic ecosystem, is the key force that determines legitimacy in a university setting. The paper contributes to business research methods by fusing metaphorical as well as sense-making research techniques to bring to sharp focus permeability of the university space to enable local economic development. The present study examines the relationship between Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) and Six Sigma methodology, recognizing the importance of SMEs in global economies. It is difficult for SMEs to seamlessly implement new processes due to a lack of resources. Developed in the manufacturing sector, Six Sigma emerges as a systematic approach to defect minimization. It is, however, critical to navigate the challenges SMEs face strategically in order to integrate successfully. Using an extensive literature review from 2012 to 2023, this paper examines the challenges and opportunities of implementing Six Sigma in SMEs. Using existing research, the paper synthesizes frameworks, models, and best practices for implementing Six Sigma in SMEs. A comprehensive resource will be established for Six Sigma implementation in SMEs, addressing the literature gap specific to SME contexts. Using systematic literature reviews, the paper answers key research questions and identifies Six Sigma implementation models and frameworks. A discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of recent models is presented in the results and discussion section. Designers must be equipped with methods to contribute to sustainability transitions. Scenario planning arose as approach to integrate future uncertainties while the low-tech concept promotes technological discernment. This paper looks at how low-tech fuelled scenario planning. Analysing institutional and archetypical scenarios shows a partial integration through high and low-tech extremes. However, more nuanced considerations are lacking. The paper examines the theoretical interconnection between the concepts of voluntourism, community-based tourism, and regenerative tourism. Voluntourism, widely criticized for its implementations unethical towards local environment and community, is re-evaluated in the light of community-based and regenerative tourism principles including unequal power dynamics and questionable long-term benefits to host communities. This paper claims that re-imagining voluntourism within the framework of regenerative tourism offers a new perspective. Regenerative tourism, characterized by its commitment to restoring, revitalizing, and enhancing the wellbeing of both natural environments and local communities, can serve as a guiding principle for voluntourism programs. Community-based tourism is integral to this theoretical exploration, as it emphasizes local participation, cultural and natural preservation, and economic empowerment. When voluntourism aligns with community-based tourism principles, it shifts its focus from shortterm, self-serving actions to responsible community-driven initiatives. By channelling the motivation and resources of volunteers towards community-led regenerative initiatives, voluntourism can contribute to positive, lasting impacts. Ethical reflection is done within the actors only. This paper is theoretical; however, its purpose is in the pragmatism of tourism concept development. It concludes to enhance the understanding of voluntourism's potential to transition from a problematic form of tourism to an ethical and responsible force for change. By reconciling voluntourism with the principles of regenerative tourism and community-based tourism, this paper aims to provide a theoretical foundation for the development of more responsible and sustainable tourism practices. Sustainable tourism and local economic development as a mechanism for religious pilgrimages in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). This is particularly pertinent for religious pilgrimages in KZN province which boosts historical landmarks and pilgrimage destinations. Pilgrimage tourism and several other forms of tourism related to it have significant affinities to the tenets of sustainable development. The purpose of this paper is to examine the complications that could arise from religious pilgrimages' potential as a form of travel that, once implemented, would be beneficial for sustainable tourism and local economic development (LED). This paper further intends to assess the pilgrimage destinations to be viewed as a mechanism for local economic development. A quantitative research design was employed, as the nature of this research necessitates the use of numerical data and descriptive statistics to draw conclusions. A standardised questionnaire was used to collect data from 410 respondents selected using a convenience sampling technique from different pilgrimage destinations in KZN, South Africa. Descriptive, bivariate, and multivariate analyses were conducted using IBM's SPSS version 28 sotiware. The pilgrims and local communities' perceptions of socio-economic contribution indicate that the availability of tourism facilities might be perceived as a socio-economic contributor to pilgrimage destinations. The findings further reveal that African religious pilgrimages can be sustainable and be a local economic development catalyst in KwaZulu-Natal. The study recommends that the South African National Christian Forum (SANCF), in collaboration with the South African government (national and provincial), develop an operational plan to provide business education, entrepreneurial skills, and relevant support to local communities surrounding religious pilgrimages or religious destinations, to empower them to contribute to the development of the local economy. Economic globalization is the increasing economic interdependence of national economies across the world through a rapid increase in cross-border movement of goods, service, technology and capital. Whereas globalization is centered on the rapid development of science and technology and increasing cross-border division of labour, economic globalization is propelled by the rapid growing significance of information in all types of productive activities and marketization; the advance of science and technologies. It provides several things to several people with removal of all trade barriers among countries. Globalization happens through three channels: trade in goods and services, movement of capital and flow of finance. Globalization in India is generally taken to mean 'integrating' the economy of the country with the world economy. The real thrust to the globalization process was provided by the new economic policy introduced by the Government of India in July 1991 at the behest of the IMF and the World Bank. India currently has the world's second-largest startup ecosystem. One of the most crucial ways to handle the urgent problems facing humanity is through startups, as they are able to come up with answers and react to problems faster than other organizations. Incubators are becoming more prevalent, and young people's enduring inclination to establish their own companies is another factor propelling early-stage startups and entrepreneurship in India. While startup claims to be able to transform the world are sometimes overblown, successful businesses may make a big difference in the world. Over the past 20 years, India's view of startups has changed dramatically, moving from a specialized business to a thriving ecosystem that has fueled the nation's economic growth and elevated its prominence abroad. India's market has a wide spectrum of wants and aspirations because of its huge and youthful population as well as its expanding middle class. The youth talent pool in India has been crucial in fostering innovation and accelerating economic expansion. India has developed into a hub for logistics, cars, and IT, which encourages start-ups. The objective of this paper is to analyse the current expansion and advancement of Indian startups. This research is based on the secondary data available through various journals and reports. The Government of India as well as State Governments have provided a strong support to the start-ups as it has a proven track record of employment generation which help to tackle the increasing unemployment in India. Tourism has a significant and, for some countries, even a dominant impact on economic growth and more efficient use of natural, technical and human resources. The main goal of the research is to explore the current state of international tourism, and the basic causes of that state, as well as to indicate possible ways of increasing income based on the export of tourist services. The paper will use the descriptive method, the method of specialization and comparison, the methods of analysis and synthesis, as well as the methods of generalization and observation. The main conclusion is that the global Covid-19 pandemic has hit the international tourism sector the hardest, and that it is gradually returning to the pre-crisis level. Chronobiology studies physiological variations due to the time of day, an unexplored factor in design research. This paper explores the effect of time of day on designers' physiological responses in idea generation. Convergent (CT) and divergent (DT) thinking, as building blocks of designing, are explored using pupil dilation as a proxy for cognitive load. Time of day and educational background are explored for engineering and industrial designers. Results show a larger pupil diameter in the afternoon than in the morning, especially for DT, with higher values for industrial designers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The transition to renewable energy resources is a challenge for Romania, as well as for the whole world. The goal of the European Commission is to accelerate the use of renewable resources to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030. Romania had in 2022, 40,171 prosumers with the forecast that they will reach 100,000 in 2023. The previous research carried out showed a positive attitude of the household population in Romania towards these energy resources, but also important barriers that considerably slow down the process, Romania being behind the target set by the European Commission. Through this research, we seek to identify how gender differences are reflected in the approach to renewable energy resources to facilitate this transition. The present research covers a gap in the specialized literature by investigating, differentiated by gender, the perception of Romanian residents regarding renewable energy resources. The case study was carried out in 2023 on residents of two cities out of the 266 in Romania, Oradea and Timișoara. The reasons for choosing the two cities are related to their similar economic development, positioning in the same part of the country, and, in particular, their performance in increasing the number of green energy prosumers. A questionnaire survey was carried out with a result of 1098 valid questionnaires with a gender structure that allows a differentiated analysis (42.53 men, 53.18 women, 4.28 unspecified). The internal consistency of the answers was carried out with aCronbach. The data processing methods used are Importance-Performance Analysis, RStudio202207.1+554, and qualitative processing with Atlas.ti22. A hypothesis we tested is whether women are more sensitive to environmental issues and the type of energy produced and consumed or the cost factor is the one that dictates. The results suggest gender-differentiated solutions for raising public awareness and encouraging action. Limits of the paper are found only in the two Romanian cities, the geographical extension of the sample being a possible future research direction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Sociological review of migrants and migration is a widespread attraction in contemporary times. Future development of tourism should be in line with sustainable development. The Republic of Serbia receives the most tourism inflows from the countries with the biggest tourists' arrivals and overnight stays in the Republic of Serbia. However, a significant discrepancy between tourism inflows and outflows has a negative impact on the economic development of Serbia. This paper aims to investigate the possibilities for eliminating these inconsistencies in line with developed countries and sustainable tourism development. The research method is based on the ranking of countries according to the mentioned criteria and mutual comparison. Tourism development of the Republic of Serbia lags behind developed countries, considering the limited importance tourism has for economic development, as well as the negative balance of inflows and outflows from tourism. That is why the economic dimension of sustainable development has the greatest discrepancies in sustainable tourism development, in relation to the ecological and social aspects, bearing in mind the significant cultural heritage and minor pollution from tourism in the Republic of Serbia. The purpose of this paper is to prepare the most commonly used cluster analysis; hierarchical and non-hierarchical cluster analysis algorithms which are the K-means, the Partition Around Medoids (PAM) and the agglomerative hierarchical, to group 37 African countries on the basis of measures of COVID-19 cases, economic development and general health resources. We found that the optimum number of clusters is four and countries like Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Gabon, Botswana, Tunisia, Mauritius, and Seychelles are grouped together into one cluster, and how Egypt and South Africa formed another cluster. Transportation electrification is one of the most effective ways to reduce the emission pollution in metropolitans. For this reason, the government of many of countries defined an incentive based policies to increase the penetration of electric vehicles in the cities, especially in large cities. Although the electric vehicles can have a positive impact of emission reduction, their development have some strong challenges that should be considered in roadmap designing process. The electric vehicles have various strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) that need to be analyzed. In this paper, the SWOT analysis of electric vehicles will be carried out from technical, economic, and environmental perspectives. The challenges of electric vehicles integration on electricity networks will be investigated and the practical solutions to address these challenges will be presented. Moreover, from the economic perspective, the market challenges from the buyers, manufactures, and governments points of view will be analyzed. This study aims to validate assumptions established by primary literature regarding the bidirectional causality between military spending and economic growth, and further develop the analysis of the main drivers of military expenditures in NATO countries. The empirical analysis is based on a sample of 30 NATO countries, with the main objective of investigating the role of other factors that might influence military spending. In addition to the common view that economic growth and population are the main drivers, we propose additional exogenous factors, such as fiscal policy determinants, that could play a key role in enhancing or reducing military spending. Our findings support the existence of a bi-directional causality between GDP and military spending. Additionally, we find that military expenditure is highly responsive to tax revenues collected for public coffers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Innovation technology is essential for the development of companies, especially in the technology sector, and is linked to the economic and social development of a country. However, in Brazil, knowledge is normally produced by universities, lacking alignment with the industry. Thus, technology parks act as promoters of interaction between university-industry-government, favoring the creation and development of technology-based companies and the transfer of knowledge between universities and companies. However, there is no consensus on what constitutes a successful technology park, and there is a lack of common evaluation metrics that allow for systematic comparison of parks. Evaluating the performance of parks is important to provide transparency on how public resources are being spent. This study aims to present the evolution of technology parks in Brazil. The results indicate that the country has 59 technology parks, housing 2,516 companies, generating approximately 53,000 jobs, with an estimated revenue of over R$12 billion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study of the energy impact on the economic and social sphere under the modern conditions is highly relevant. In this paper, two different approaches are used to answer the question of the energy impact on economic development and the status of the social sector. The first approach is based on the bibliometric analysis, which allows determining the current areas of studying the role of energy in the economy and the place of these studies in science. The information base for the analysis is a thematic selection of Scopus publications. The second approach is based on the economic and mathematical analysis of statistical information from open sources to determine the impact of energy consumption and the energy intensity of GDP on a number of economic and social development indicators. In recent years, the concepts of SSCM and sustainability performance (SP) have gained significant attention in both academics and industry. Organizations across the globe are striving to adopt sustainable practices in their supply chain operations. While much research has focused on developed countries, this study aims to explore the practices and dimensions of sustainability, sustainable performance, and the interactions between SSCM and SP in the manufacturing industries of EDEs. This research adopts a systematic literature review approach to identify the current state of knowledge on dominant dimensions of SSCM, SP, and the SSCM-SP interactions. The findings reveal that these factors revolve around environmental, social, and economic dimensions following the TBL principles. However, environmental practices are still the dominantly investigated aspects of sustainability research with social aspects having relatively lower consideration. Moreover, this study investigates the SP dimensions mainly investigated by extant literature and identifies eight dimensions. The extant literature has principally measured SP in terms of environmental, social, and economic dimensions. However, the operational performance dimension is underrepresented in the literature despite theoretical assumptions. Furthermore, the study results reveal that the SSCMSP nexus in the context of manufacturing industries in EDEs remains inconsistent despite the disproportional skewness towards the positive link. The study also reveals that environmental and social performance positively affect economic performance. This research contributes to the existing literature by providing insights into SSCM and SP. Tourism induced by video games represents a new form of tourism that is emerging as an opportunity for economic development. Due to its particular characteristics, the tourism induced by video games stands out as an attractive form and related to a special category of tourists, namely those who are part of the gaming industry. The purpose of the study is focused on the identification and analysis of Romania's tourist attractiveness elements, within the Resident Evil Village game based on a comparison between the frames presented in the game and frames from reality. At the same time, the development of the study also included the analysis of the evolution of tourism induced by video games by consulting the specialized literature. The main results of the study were highlighted by the identification of multiple elements and locations related to Transylvania within the video game, thus shaping an innovative touristic image of the historical province through the video game. Purpose: In recent years, there has been a growing interest from tourism sector companies in the implementation of sustainable management practices that combine economic growth with nature preservation and social responsibility measures, to ensure true sustainability of their enterprises. The purpose of this study is to understand how the management practices adopted by companies in tourism sector can contribute to the fulfillment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In this work, it is proposed to analyze the sustainability practices in small-scale accommodations, assuming as a reference to sustain future business project. Methodology: Based on research developed in a post-graduation academic project, tourism companies were taken as case studies to explore if their management is aligned with SDGs. In a qualitative methodological approach, a literature search was used to support theoretical framework, and benchmarking technique to prepare a comparison, in this initial phase, between two tourism companies based on the standard of geographical location (Baixo Alentejo); subsector (local and rural accommodation) and Biosphere certification. Results: After the analysis of different SDGs to which they attend, selected companies had sustainable practices, although the degree of awareness and execution of these practices were relatively consistent. Research limitations: This is an ongoing investigation, and after the initial exploratory phase based only in 2 examples, next phase is to move towards a broader approach to a more representative number of selected projects in Alentejo´s region. Operational analytics is the direction of research related to the analysis of the current state of computing processes and the prediction of future states in order to anticipate imbalances and take timely measures to stabilize a complex system. There are two relevant areas in ATLAS Distributed Computing that are currently the focus of studies: user physics analysis including the forecast of popularity of data samples among users, and evaluating WLCG centers for their readiness to process user analysis payloads. Studying these areas is challenging due to the complexity involved, as it requires a comprehensive understanding of numerous boundary conditions typically found in large-scale distributed computing infrastructures. Forecasts of data popularity are problematic without the categorization of user tasks by their types (data transformation or physics analysis), which do not always appear on the surface but may induce noise, which introduces significant distortions for predictive analysis. Evaluating the WLCG resources by their analysis workloads is also a challenging task as it is necessary to find a balance between the workload of the resource, its performance, the waiting time for jobs on it, as well as the volume of jobs that it processes. This is especially difficult in a heterogeneous computing environment, where legacy resources are used along with modern high-performance machines. The UK construction industry is an important aspect of the UK economy; however, it is struggling to keep pace with wider economic growth and if it does not change it will not be able to keep up with demand. There is a gap between academia and practice, and little understanding of how to successfully innovate within the industry. Following a workshop with 25 construction industry professionals on the barriers to innovation in the construction industry, key themes were developed through thematic analysis including regulation, fragmentation and constant change. Sustainable Product Development (SPD) enables the systematic incorporation of sustainability into product development and can be achieved by implementing a number of management practices. An industry survey was conducted to investigate the capability of manufacturing companies to apply a consolidated set of 61 SPD management practices. The results indicate that despite the high interest for SPD, the uptake of SPD practices in industry is still behind the state-of-the-art literature. To enable the circular economy paradigm, it is important to design easy-to-disassemble products. A new method, known as Design for Circular Disassembly (DfCD), has been proposed to enhance product disassembly performances toward circularity. The method was tested on a small-sized product, showing promising results. However, its applicability to medium-sized products remains unclear. The goal of this article is to assess the effectiveness of DfCD on medium-sized products, particularly washing machines. In an ever-changing landscape, family businesses, characterized by their unique blend of tradition, familial bonds, and entrepreneurial spirit, stand as bastions of resilience and continuity, playing a pivotal role in economic growth and societal development. Indeed, family businesses account for 80 percent of all business enterprises worldwide, making them the prevalent form of conducting business. As these entities grapple with the imperative to remain economically viable while navigating the intricacies of the contemporary business landscape, the incorporation of sustainable practices into the organizational fabric takes centre stage. By actively seeking a harmonious and reciprocal relationship between financial objectives, social responsibility, and environmental accountability, family businesses can not only secure their own longevity but also contribute to a more equitable and sustainable global environment. This narrative becomes especially compelling at the intersection with gender. Exploring the intersection between gender and sustainability provides insights into how gender dynamics influence and are influenced by efforts to achieve sustainable development. Moreover, understanding and addressing this interplay is essential for devising holistic and effective strategies that promote social equity, economic prosperity, and environmental stewardship. It underscores the need for inclusive and gender-sensitive approaches in all aspects of sustainable development. Acknowledging the significance of this ongoing dialogue, this study delves into the intricate relationship between gender dynamics and the environmental dimension of sustainability within family businesses. Through a systematic literature review of empirical research, this work specifically aims to uncover the linkage between board gender diversity and corporate environmental performance. The findings indicate that gender-diverse boards improve environmental value creation, and women in leadership positions correlate positively with environmental disclosure in family-controlled businesses. Overall, a strong positive correlation emerges between the proportion of women directors on the board and the level of environmental sustainability. The findings of this study hold implications not only for family business practitioners but also for policymakers and academics interested in propelling gender equality and sustainability agendas, notably within the framework of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This study explores the intersection of feminism and entrepreneurship within prominent management studies, emphasizing the vital role women entrepreneurs play in economic growth. Despite feminism's societal impact, a significant gap exists in leading management studies, potentially reinforcing a male-centric perspective. To investigate this gap, we conducted a systematic literature review focusing on the top 50 journals in "Business Management and Accounting" and "Strategy and Management." Our review, utilizing the SPAR-4-SLR method, revealed only 11 documents on feminism and entrepreneurship, highlighting limited coverage in top academic journals.
