Schenbeck views Dett as a leading proponent of Romantic Nationalism in music, and recounts Dett looking to Russia, among other places, for musical guidance and inspiration. In I Racial Uplift and American Music, 1878-1943, i Lawrence Schenbeck explores the relationship between music and racial uplift ideology, between the end of Reconstruction and the beginning of WWII. That said, the literature on music in historically Black colleges and universities remains extremely limited, and Schenbeck offers some possible avenues to further expand our understanding about the role music played at those institutions. Vijay Mishra's meticulous analysis of the Rushdie Emory Archive - Salman Rushdie and the Genesis of Secrecy - is one of the most significant paperbacks to have been released in humanities publishing in 2021 (originally published in hardback in 2019). In one sense this book might be understood as a literary project, one that enriches understanding of the Rushdie's published works through the perspectives gained from close reading and detailed cross-referencing of Emory's extensive collection of the author's personal papers, unpublished manuscripts, digital materials and ephemera. However, to categorise The Genesis of Secrecy simply in terms of its literary credentials would be to overlook its conceptual and methodological value to wider areas of culture and media research. Green is there again in "Creative Life", when Enid writes that in a patient's first few weeks his father had been very ill, so that "the mother who tried to feed her child must have been distracted, and therefore ceased to exist, or became dead, for the patient" (p. 105). Enid talks about a patient who was so frightened by an interpretation that Enid put her hand on her shoulder firmly, "from a spontaneous feeling that she needed a sample of closeness which was not comforting but was alive" (pp. 228-229). In the "Talking Treatments" chapter, Enid says that in any sort of talking treatment the practitioner and the patient are "emotionally involved with each other, in a special, professional way, both distant and intimate" (p. 155).
