Data Science is a burgeoning area in the iField. But Data Science practices have far outstripped the field's ethical safeguards. We argue that Data Science graduate education programs must address this critical problem. In this theoretical and conceptual paper, we posit an ordinary macroethics that we call data flourishing. We contend that this macroethics is most appropriately developed through a holistic, human‐centered data science (HCDS)‐based pedagogy that concentrates on cultivating communities of ethical practice (COEPs) through social learning. We favor embedding this macroethics throughout iField programs' graduate data science curricula and by extension, the entire data science education enterprise. This paper aligns with the 2023 ASIS&T annual meeting theme of translating research into practice, particularly the subthemes of "improving decision‐making" and "understanding the power of information to develop human happiness, equality, and wellbeing." The Z‐Inspection® Process is a form of applied research for the ethical assessment of AI systems. It is quickly establishing itself as a robust method to ethically assess AI in Europe. The process is predicated on the European Union's Ethics Guidelines for Trustworthy AI, outlining ethical principles intended to guide European AI development. In contrast, the United States has only recently released its holistic version of such guidelines, the Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights. The aim of this paper is to assess the suitability of the Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights as an ethical framework underpinning the use of the Z‐Inspection® Process in the United States. This paper provides preliminary findings of comparative analysis of European and United States ethical frameworks for responsible AI development. Findings outline primary ethical concepts that are shared between respective frameworks. Findings suggest the US Blueprint is suitable as an ethical framework for the Z‐Inspection® Process. There are notable omissions within the US framework which would require further development for Z‐Inspection® use. The welding industry in the U.S. faces a serious shortage of skilled welders. The goal of this paper is to explore welding instructors' attitudes toward applications of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) as well as artificial intelligence (AI) in welding training. Such approaches could allow future welders to acquire welding skills faster and in a safer work environment. Also, the welding industry could attract a more diverse group of workers. This paper builds on previous literature and studies researching the use of AR, VR, and AI in welding and in other comparable industries. The paper reports findings from interviews with eight welding instructors at a community college to obtain insights regarding how they believe AR, VR, and AI could be used in welding training. This paper aims to investigate the Trustworthy Repositories Audit & Certification (TRAC) process by examining the communication practices and risk communication dynamics among auditors during the audit. Through an in‐depth, qualitative analysis of the audit process and the interactions between auditors, this paper provides valuable insights into the importance of diverse backgrounds, effective communication, and consensus building in the assessment of TRAC checklist requirements. Furthermore, the paper highlights potential areas of improvement within the audit process, addressing concerns related to disagreements, reliance on leadership, and the comprehensiveness of risk identification and communication. We reviewed 22 papers to identify the most prominently studied factors related to information use in group decision making processes and explore the research gaps in this topic. We identified eight main factors of information use in the process: sense of group identity and group diversity, group heterogeneity or homogeneity, task perception, and personality/individual viewpoints; and access to information, argument analysis, communication medium, and decision rule. Our literature review suggested several research directions: investigations of the members' motivations in sharing information; studies that use mixed research methods to examine a topic; and exploration of various information sharing and use modes besides verbal and written information channels. Epistemicide refers to knowledge destruction and is perpetuated through epistemic injustices, which are the ways we harm knowers in the process of their epistemological development. Within acts of commemoration, epistemic injustices can influence the prioritization and politicization of memory, thus shaping our shared understandings of cultural heritage. This paper situates epistemicide within discussions of cultural heritage and collective memory by drawing from existing literature on archival silences. This framing allows us to articulate and define commemorative injustices– memorial injustice, performative injustice, and documentary injustice– expanding the previously established epistemicide framework. Naming commemorative injustices promotes the development of a meta‐language to connect related concepts of knowledge destruction, silencing, and absence across disciplines in cultural information studies. While commemorative injustices are not necessarily committed out of individual mal intent, this paper notes that they are byproducts of culturally constructed historical precedents and social norms. Beyond a theoretical expansion, we explore the designation of evidence of cultural heritage as manifestations of information, name enforced archival silences as instances of commemorative injustice, identify how multiple epistemic injustices may act concurrently to inflict harm, and provide critical theory to inform interventions by drawing on examples of epistemic injustice inflicted by U.S. cultural heritage institutions. The citizens' right to access government information, through legislations like the Right to Information (RTI), is now the norm especially in democratic countries. However, the effectiveness of its implementation is still a challenge. This paper investigates the legal framework and the implementation of RTI in the Philippines by examining the Executive Order no. 2 and analysing a sample of 180 RTI requests submitted to the three government agencies with the greatest number of requests. Findings reveal issues on accessibility, FOI literacy, and privacy happening across the three government agencies. We argue that these issues are related to institutional capacity. The paper examines information practices of five projects that emerged in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The projects are conceptualized as resistance projects, i.e., the initiatives that stand against misinformation, censorship, and the invasion itself. The study used virtual ethnography and discourse analysis to examine the projects' web presence and social media channels and the materials about them. The paper describes the driving forces behind the projects, the technologies they use, and their information‐related practices. The latter include information gathering, dissemination and mediation, extralinguistic communication, support and advice, and mobilization. One of the first attempts to document Russian information resistance, this paper provides insight into information behavior under oppressive conditions. It broadens the theorizing of misinformation and disinformation by shifting the focus from algorithmic countermeasures to misinformation, such as detecting bots or fake news, to human‐centered activism. This paper observes that studies on the explanation of recommender systems lack a normative lens. Specifically, it uses Facebook's micro‐targeted advertisement explanations as a case for discussion, and shows how research mostly take a descriptive lens and focus on answering the what and how questions while the normative questions concerning how things should be are under explored. The paper argues that the normative and descriptive lenses are interdependent, and the lack of the normative lens contributes to inconsistent research suggestions. Numerous studies have revealed that cultural factors play an important role in intellectual property (IP) management in cross‐national contexts. Although understanding the factors is currently recognized as an essential problem, little research has been done on systematically analyzing and modeling these cultural norms and values. This paper reports on a work in progress that aims to build a theoretical model to explain the differences of people's perceptions about IP infringement in different countries. ABSTRACT A major challenge to formal scientific communication is the retraction of published works. This study includes a detailed analysis of retracted articles in biomedical literature, including categorization of the reasons for retraction. The examination covers the years 2010 through 2014. Analysis also includes citations to articles retracted between 2001 and 2005. The totality of the investigation is couched within the context of communication in the biomedical sciences and, to a lesser extent, of the formulation of theories of citation. ABSTRACT Prior studies have identified a need for engaging researchers in providing and curating their identity data. This poster reports preliminary findings of a qualitative study exploring how researchers use and engage in online research identity management (RIM) systems. The findings identify nine activity or task related motivations of using RIM systems. This study also identified three levels of participation in RIM systems: Readers, Personal Record Managers, and Community Members. Most participants of this study fell into the category of Personal Record Managers, who may maintain their own profiles in a RIM system. This suggests that a majority of researchers may be willing to maintain their research identity profiles. Institutional repository managers may consider recruiting researchers as not only research information and data providers, but also curators of their own research identity data. This paper presents a mobile data collection method using a 360° camera developed in an ongoing qualitative doctoral research project. The method captures audio, participant action and the running environment visuals of a situation in an immersive way compared to traditional audio‐video capture. The method contributes towards an understanding of information types, use and value amongst those who run. This paper is about the politics of technological progress as it is being played out among a loose network of Ghanaian makers. It unpacks how the practice of 'making' unfolds as a site for positioning the self and the nation within a global imaginary of techno futures. The paper argues, first, that 'making' in Ghana is emblematic of a crossroads of imaginative possibilities for technological design and production, and second, that this marks a distinct turn in the politics of technological progress, particularly when situated against ongoing econo‐political negotiations between the Global south, the West, and China. In this paper, we examine the ways in which the evolution of federal and agency‐specific data management policies has affected and continues to affect the long‐term preservation of digital scientific data produced by the United States government. After reviewing the existing literature on the role of archival theory and practice in the preservation of scientific data, we present the case of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to analyze how data management activities at this agency are shaped by legislative mandates as well as both government‐wide and agency‐specific information‐management policies. Through the connected network of law, federal policy, agency policy, and the records schedules which govern recordkeeping practice in the federal government, we propose a number of further questions on how government agencies can effectively provide for the management of scientific data as federal records. This paper presents initial research from a broader project about the impact of libraries on the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In 2015, the UN launched the SDGs, a set of 17 goals for global development by the year 2030. Librarians helped shape the inclusion of access to information in these goals and are involved in furthering them through providing access to information. The OCLC Global Council has selected the SDGs as its area of focus for 2020 and is formulating a research program that will identify and advocate for the ways that libraries can help further the SDGs. This paper details the history of the SDGs and the role that librarians played in shaping them. It shows examples of ways that librarians and library initiatives have helped further them through providing access to information and information literacy skills. Finally, it offers suggestions for ways that library leaders could structure their information activates around the SDGs, based on data from a survey of OCLC Global Council delegates. The Journal of the Association for Information Science & Technology (JASIST) is a leading information science journal, recognized by many ranking metrics. Understanding patterns in articles published would be helpful to new researchers seeking to publish with the journal. However, the last comprehensive bibliometric analysis on JASIST is more than a decade old. The objective of this paper is to analyze the bibliographic information of full‐length research articles published in JASIST during the last two decades. This includes metrics such as article count, authorship, international collaboration, citations, and topical areas. Data was collected from SCOPUS, JASIST website, and Scimago. The findings show that JASIST published 3,052 articles during 2000–2020, which got cited 180,608 times (59.18 times per article) to date. Joint authorship and international collaboration has been increasing. Authors from institutions in 70 countries have published, with most articles from USA, with authorship from China steadily increasing in recent years. The detailed findings in the paper would help information science researchers and practitioners to assess the areas of focus, and various patterns in a top journal of the field. ABSTRACT Autism represents a broad group of developmental disorders characterized by impaired social interactions. It has attracted widespread concern in academia and media. The reported causes of autism have an enormous impact on the people's opinion about autistic patients and various treatments from scientific literature and media news. In this study, we use open information extraction (OIE), a machine reading technique, to automatically extract causal relationships from autism researches and news reports. We explored the differences between the scientific literature and news about the reported etiologies with respect to autism. As a result, we find that scientific papers clearly emphasize physical and biological factors, while the media emphasizes social factors as the perceived cause of autism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper investigates how different framings of fake news on social protests are related to readers' responses on Facebook. A 2 (news standpoint: pro‐protest vs. pro‐establishment) × 2 (violence description: protesters' violence vs. police' violence) within‐participants web‐based experimental survey (N = 90) was used to study readers' intention to like, share, and comment on Facebook. Results suggested that exposure to different framings of fake news led readers to respond differently on Facebook. Moreover, the intention to click "Like" did not necessarily translate to the intention to click "Share" or "Comment" and vice versa. As an integral part of research activities, scholars frequently interact with bibliographic information retrieval systems to acquire scholarly information. With the dramatic increase of scientific literature, there is the pressing need of building effective and efficient bibliographic information retrieval systems that support more granular and complex bibliographic information needs. Investigating users' interaction with these systems plays an important role in understanding the systems' features and usability issues, which contributes to better system design and implementation. In this paper, we evaluate three interactive bibliographic information retrieval systems proposed in our previous studies using a user‐centered approach, including form‐, natural language‐, and visual graph‐based systems. This study recruits 20 participants to evaluate the three systems from the aspects of success rate, search time, query size, usefulness, ease of use, ease of learning, and satisfaction. Results showed that: the form‐based system needed the least time to formulate simple bibliographic queries and allowed the participants to make the least mistakes; the natural language‐based system needed the least time to formulate high‐complexity bibliographic queries and was rated as the most useful, easy‐to‐use, and easy‐to‐learn system; and the visual graph‐based system's strengths lie in the support of complex queries as shown that it got better ratings of usefulness and satisfaction by the high‐complexity task group. Scholarly resources, including publications, software, data sets, and instruments, are created in an iterative and interrelated fashion. Managing the relationships that exist among and between such resources is a central requirement for information systems. Practically, however, many scholarly resources exist online as discrete entities, divorced from other resources to which they are intimately related. A robust system for linking scholarly resources in a broad and sustainable fashion will have to navigate a set of complex and interrelated requirements. This paper presents results and insights from three different projects that focused on supporting more robust linkages among scholarly resources. The discussion details key technical and institutional challenges looking forward and backward in time across what might be considered to be a "relationship life cycle": identifying, validating, characterizing, and preserving relationships. Many authors have proposed guidelines for online browsing systems, however recently empirical research has added depth to these requirements. There has also been a spate of development in online browsing systems, particularly for library shelf browsing. These strands of research are clearly in service of providing better browsing options in an increasingly online library environment, however they have not yet been brought together. In this paper we use a recent empirical study and a survey of the literature to generate a comprehensive list of requirements for browsing interfaces. We will then compare that list to the interface features of a range of different book browsing interfaces, demonstrating why they may be more or less effective, and signpost development of more effective online browsing. This paper explores how the patterns of collaboration change throughout a scientist's career, especially their collaboration with so‐called "giants"—well‐known elite scholars with very high scientific impact. We divide scientist's careers into five stages based on the number of years since obtaining their PhD, and for each stage, we calculate a number of indicators, such as publication count, normalized citation count, count of collaborations, count of collaborations with "giants," and percentage of uninterrupted and continuous presence. Our analysis shows that although collaborating with "giants" may benefit a young scholar, they are more likely to achieve greater scientific success if they first work independently and only collaborate with "giants" later in their career. Meanwhile, high‐impact authors tend to work with "giants" early in their career, but not in the later stages, which forces us to reconsider the established notions of when is best to collaborate with elite scholars. Moreover, we find that high‐impact authors tend to have fewer co‐authors per article, regardless of the stage of their careers, indicating that collaboration is important, but the size of collaborations also matters. Mispractice by researchers—plagiarism in particular—is, according to the research evidence enculturated within research groups. We interview a small sample of senior academics with a clean record regarding plagiarism, to investigate what has influenced their practice, and how they in turn influence the research groups and research students that they oversee. Although open government information awareness has enhanced since China implemented the Open Government Information Regulation, the complaints about the information disclosure work also increased. Previous research has ignored the impact of the department's responsibilities on information disclosure, which are essential as some departments handle information that should not be disclosed. From this standpoint, this paper is the first to analyze the differences in departments' open government information performance from their annual information openness reports. Variance and correlation analysis show that the potential harm of disclosure to third parties' legitimate rights and interests, the availability of relevant information, and duplicate requests can explain their differences in government information disclosure on request. Besides, this paper calls for an elastic criterion for openness evaluation and finds that the benchmark effect in previous research does not apply to departments with different responsibilities. Scientific retractions can be an indicator that misinformation is present in a research paper. Retractions are therefore an interesting research object to explore news coverage of misleading scientific information. This poster presents how problematic research (before and after retraction) is portrayed in news outlets, the impact of the retraction on these reports and the relationship of retracted scientific results and the spread of false information. Starting from a list of 270 retracted COVID‐19 papers from the Retraction Watch blog (https://retractionwatch.com), we analysed news articles of 16 retracted publications, that were immensely discussed in journalistic formats. By presenting three different use cases, we show how misinformation emanates from retractions, how problematic research is presented in media and what factors influence the message of the article. Our research contributes to a better understanding of how retractions are used and perceived in propagating scientific misinformation on one hand and in mitigating it on the other. Data quality assurance (DQA) is critical to research data sharing and reuse. There has been a growing recognition of data transparency, reproducibility, credibility, and validity in research. Although the research data curation literature is large, it lacks data quality theory‐guided examinations of DQA practices in research data repositories. This poster paper reports on the preliminary findings of a larger study that examines DQA practices in research data repositories, including their use of DQA ontologies, standards, and metadata vocabularies. In particular, the paper examines two quality standards and an ontology for their conceptualization of DQA activities and their structure. The authors used the findings of the analysis and the data quality literature to synthesize an initial model of a DQA process in research data repositories that conceptualizes three DQA activities: evaluation, intervention, and communication. Author keywords attached to academic papers are often used in intellectual structure analysis. However, the length and selection criteria for keywords vary across publications and, even some publishers do not require keywords for their articles. To explore the opportunity to overcome such keyword inconsistency issues, this study compared author keywords from papers focused on the digital divide with those extracted using the language models, BERT and ChatGPT. Preliminary findings reveal structural variations across the keyword networks and suggest a potential need to revisit keyword‐based research. During the COVID‐19 pandemic, some research that otherwise would have been conducted in person pivoted to online platforms. This poster paper describes lessons learned from an online study of information behavior by individuals with long‐term information needs, focusing on what was learned about how to conduct such a study online. Broadly, three themes are evident: (1) Trust mechanisms were weaker than would be expected for an in‐person study, resulting in greater coordination difficulties; (2) What seemed to be a fair reimbursement rate appears to have provided an outsized incentive for fraud; and (3) Zoom proved to be sufficiently capable as a platform for remote use of software for a study that had not originally been designed with remote use in mind. Personal information management (PIM) includes the activities and preferences that support future information use. PIM is especially important in the context of engineering education, where learners are expected to engage with a substantial amount of information. This paper builds on the findings of a research project on the information practices of undergraduate engineering students, examined through multiple qualitative and quantitative methods (Dodson, 2021). This paper reports on one aspect of the project, an online questionnaire (n = 103). Addressing the data skills gap, namely the superabundance of data and the lack of human capital to exploit it, this paper argues that iSchools and Library and Information Science programs are ideal venues for data science education. It unpacks two case studies: the LIS Education and Data Science for the National Digital Platform (LEADS‐4‐NDP) project (2017–2019), and the LIS Education and Data Science‐Integrated Network Group (LEADING) project (2020–2023). These IMLS‐funded initiatives respond to four national digital platform challenges: LIS faculty prepared to teach data science and mentor the next generation of educators and practitioners, an underdeveloped pedagogical infrastructure, scattered and inconsistent data science education opportunities for students and current information professionals, and an immature data science network. LEADS and LEADING have made appreciable collaborative, interdisciplinary contributions to the data science education community; these projects comprise an essential part of the long‐awaited and much‐needed national digital platform. Study reported in this paper analyzed over twenty thousand machine‐readable library metadata records in MARC 21 bibliographic format that are based on Resource Description and Access (RDA) standard. The focus of this analysis is on change in subject metadata—data elements designed for representing the aboutness of information objects—over a 6‐year period between 2014 and 2020. The analyzed dataset is the entire population of the records representing English‐language video recordings in DVD format in WorldCat database as of one year after official transition to RDA data content standard in library metadata creation. Analysis of metadata representing audiovisual materials is needed as audiovisual metadata practices tend to differ from those for other materials due to high occurrence of unique resources. The study includes quantitative and qualitative analyses into the change in the application of data elements (fields and subfields) over time and categorizes the observed change. Research data is an asset. Researchers may be required to provide access to their data by scientific funders or academic journals and deposit their data in archives. Managers of archives are guided by principles, policies, and the law when curating and providing access to data. Practices around data storage and access, however, are not always cut and dry; research data managers sometimes need to interpret policies. This paper presents findings from qualitative interviews with 15 data managers from 8 repositories in the U.S. These repositories were all affiliated with universities but served varied constituents and provided a range of services. Differences revealed opportunities and challenges in managing data repositories regarding, for instance, who can access data and the level of protection data requires. Cancer patients seek information about their health and illness using many different approaches. Some prefer to seek intensively whereas other avoid seeking information. Over the course of the cancer continuum an individual may meet their needs using several different approaches. In this paper, we explore how avoidance can be an approach used as part of information seeking activities and not just as an alternative approach. Interviews with six current and former cancer patients were conducted and audio recorded for transcription. The transcriptions were coded to identify themes and concepts. We identify the different patterns of information seeking among the interviewees ranging from seeking intensively to avoiding information. Furthermore, we find that exposing yourself selectively to information as well as avoiding some information can be strategies to protect the information seeker from information the individual is not able to cope with. This paper examines differences in the user feedback of scholars with varied experience with digital tools. As part of a usability study of a historical digital collection, our team conducted semi‐structured interviews with scholars with varying backgrounds. We categorized the sample into two groups, one with significant experience and one with little experience in using digital technology. Qualitative analysis of the interview data showed that users generally provided similar feedback. However, there were instances in which those with significant experience provided more design suggestions, and those with less experience expressed confusion and provided more feedback on website content. Living independently of mainstream institutions, digital community archives and digital humanities collections confront systemic barriers to medium‐ and long‐term viability. Their sustainability tends to be undermined by shifts in technologies, resources, and communities over time. Because these collections contain irreplaceable and invaluable evidence of communities and histories that are underrepresented in cultural institutions, their fragility compromises the completeness and equity of our collective digital heritage. Partnerships between institutions and community‐based collections often founder over a lack of shared understanding: of the expertise each partner brings to the table, of the scope and extent of mutual commitments, and of what sustainability even entails for a given project. This paper reports preliminary outcomes of a case study of the Lakeland Digital Archive, exploring how Lakeland's community understands sustainability in the context of their digital archive, as part of a broader study of community‐centered sustainability strategies for digital collections. Measuring the societal impact of digital repositories is a wicked problem. To capture information about the impacts of digital repositories that become certified as Trustworthy Digital Repositories (TDRs), a taxonomy describing activities cited as evidence of compliance with TDR standards is needed to relate those activities to socially beneficial outcomes. This paper presents a Minimum Viable Prototype (MVP) for a TDR Impacts taxonomy to enable the expression of their activities in a structured way. Our MVP provides a proof‐of‐concept that by formalizing concepts about TDRs in a taxonomy, we can investigate ways to measure whether the impacts associated with becoming and remaining a certified TDR are also impacts that generate societal value. Implications of the work described include potential strategies to identify, extract, and/or author machine‐readable descriptions of measurable facets of TDR activities and the resulting impacts on communities. Leisure is seen as important in the settlement and acculturation experiences of immigrant and refugee populations as well as helping them in maintaining their cultural identity and ties to their homeland. The study covered by this paper looks at a virtual small world, converging around a leisure activity of fanfiction reading and writing from a gender and diaspora perspective, with an aim to understanding what is experienced as information within that context. Adopting a theoretical lens drawing on information and document experience literature, information was found to be experienced as everyday, as social ties, as awareness and as memories leading to a broad conceptualization of information as meaningful experience. The study also highlighted the important role played by the social context in these experiences of information, while underscoring the usefulness in adopting an experience approach, going beyond what has been the norm in the form of information seeking and problematic situations. Trust greatly contributes to human‐AI collaboration, however, human's trust to IPA is hard to establish and lacks exploration. The purpose of this paper is to recognize the factors that affect the trustworthiness of IPA. 358 questionnaires were analyzed by PLS‐SEM to construct the model, while thematic analysis was used to discover expectance of IPA. Chi‐square tests and T‐test were used to distinguish the difference between two user groups. Three factors that capability of system, personality of agent, and availability of interface have a significant impact on the trustworthiness of IPA. The capability of system is the most essential as the threshold with users' plenty of expectations. Most users pay less attention to the availability of interface and the personality of agent has a great impact on the trustworthiness of IPA. As community‐oriented programs move from intervention to infrastructure, questions of just and equitable access to that infrastructure both arise and become more consequential to those served. However, extant tools are general in scope, often undertested, and inconsistently linked with positive outcomes for served communities and service providers. We explore the dynamics and implications of a key tool within this infrastructure intended to enable portable collaboration across organizations serving those who are experiencing homelessness: the VI‐SPDAT (Vulnerability Index ‐ Service Prioritization Decision Assistance Tool). This tool, while providing a means of coordinated assessment, must itself be negotiated according to the values, data concerns, and goals of the agencies and service providers who make use of it. This paper reports findings from 29 interviews with individuals working in nonprofits, charities, and government agencies that provide services or resources to people experiencing homelessness within the City of Austin's Continuum of Care. The life‐and‐death stakes of the VI‐SPDAT, which is designed to prioritize access to services based in part on a prediction of potential for premature mortality, drive home the need for equitable and just infrastructure. Despite COVID‐19's devastating repercussions on higher education, scholars have yet to address its impact on Library and Information Science pedagogy. This exploratory qualitative case study centers on how archival educators weathered the onslaught of the pandemic. Drawing upon semistructured interviews with 31 archival educators and documentary evidence, this research addresses the sudden shift to online education; the concomitant loss of hands‐on work opportunities and the workarounds educators developed; affectivity and an emergent ethics of pedagogical care among students and educators; and educators' lessons learned from the pandemic and their future projections regarding archival education. This paper illuminates the evolving landscape of pedagogy and its attendant challenges preparing the next generation of archival professionals during an unprecedented period of duress. As primary sources, archival records are a unique information source at the very heart of humanities research. However, how humanities researchers move from information to knowledge creation by making meaning from archival records has not been the focus of previous empirical research. This is surprising, as creating new knowledge through (re)interpretation of records is a core motivation and outcome of humanities research; as representations of historical and social occurrences, archival records rely on researchers' interpretation of content, context, and structure to establish an 'archival' meaning of the record, before applying this meaning within their own work. Therefore, constructing knowledge from archival materials necessitates a dual process of knowledge creation to create novel insights from a hybrid interpretation of archival meaning and the researcher's own interests. This paper presents findings from a naturalistic empirical observation of 11 humanities researchers engaging in research at a national archive, centring on key information activities that facilitate knowledge creation from archival records: Scanning, Relating, Capturing and Organising. Through these activities, scholars integrate their research aims and objectives with archival meaning to generate new insights. This paper introduces a mixed‐methods approach for forensically reconstructing the propagation of visual media via networked digital devices. The authors present case studies drawn from political misinformation around the January 6, 2021 riots at the U.S. Capitol. Using interpretive analysis, the authors identify traces of user interfaces that remain in images being shared about the riots. Using computational analysis, the authors evaluate compression levels in digital photographs of the events in question, thus identifying which instances of the image are closer to the source (as well as which images appear to be identical). By combining these two approaches, the authors argue that SMOC BRISQUEt refines our understanding of misinformation's memetic spread—helpful in curbing future abuses as well as in guiding the production of more effective cross‐platform spread when desired. Libraries and library consortia are adopting controlled digital lending (CDL) as a strategy, accelerated by the ongoing COVID‐19 pandemic, to facilitate equitable access to print collections. While advocates of CDL contend that digitize‐and‐lend practices reflect an incremental, technology‐assisted adjustment to traditional library circulation, lending, and resource‐sharing practices, opponents of CDL in the United States and Canada argue that the practice contravenes well‐established copyright protections. This paper discusses current controversies surrounding CDL, its potential promise and perils, and concludes that a reasonable, equitable, and forward‐looking application of copyright laws ought to insulate libraries and library consortia from exposure to liability for engaging in CDL.
