Summary: The Journal of Manufacturing and Materials Processing (JMMP) aims to provide an international forum for the documentation and dissemination of recent, original, and significant research studies in the analysis of processes, equipment, systems, and materials related to material heat treatment, solidification, deformation, addition, removal, welding, and accretion for the industrial fabrication and production of parts, components, and products. The JMMP was established in 2017 and has published more than 300 contributions. It has been listed in the ESCI, Inspec (IET), and Scopus (Elsevier). In celebration of the anniversary of the JMMP, the Editorial Office has put together this Special Issue, which includes several representative papers that reflect the vibrant growth and dynamic trend of research in this field.

Summary: This book represents a collection of contributions in the field of the synthesis and characterization of chemical compounds, natural products, chemical reactivity, and computational chemistry. Among its contents, the reader will find high-quality, peer-reviewed research and review articles that were published in the open access journal Compounds by members of the Editorial Board and the authors invited by the Editorial Office and Editor-in-Chief.

Summary: "Exclusive Feature Papers in Colorants" is a collection of important high-quality papers (original research articles or comprehensive review papers) published in open access. This Special Issue aims to discuss new knowledge or new cutting-edge developments in the colorants research field through selected works, in the hope of making a great contribution to the community. We intend for this issue to be the best forum for disseminating excellent research findings as well as sharing innovative ideas in the field.

Diabetology (ISSN 2673-4540) is an international, peer-reviewed scientific open access journal that provides an advanced forum for studies related to epidemiology, etiology, pathophysiology, pathogenesis, management, complications, and prevention of diabetes, including the molecular, biochemical, and physiological aspects of diabetes. In this Special Issue, "Feature Papers", we aim to publish outstanding contributions in the main fields covered by the journal, which will make a great contribution to the community. This book covers the whole spectrum of diabetology from risk screening, risk markers, pathways of disease in type 1 diabetes and insulin treatment, and management of the disease and comorbidities.

Summary: During the COVID-19 crisis, the European corporate ecosystem avoided major disruptions, and corporate bankruptcy rates even declined. This outcome mostly resulted from the strength of support from monetary, financial supervisory and fiscal policies. Using the 2021 vintage of the EIB Investment Survey (EIBIS) matched with balance sheet data on firms' profits and losses, this paper investigates what has driven the allocation of fiscal policy support and the impact of this support during the investment recovery. It finds that support was largely directed towards firms that were most affected by the crisis in terms of lost sales, and was not tilted firms already weak before the crisis. It also shows that the firms that benefitted from this support tend to be more optimistic in their investment plans, especially with regard to digital technologies.

Summary: In this landmark Companion, expert contributors from around the world map out the field of the critical medical humanities. This is the first volume to introduce comprehensively the ways in which interdisciplinary thinking across the humanities and social sciences might contribute to, critique and develop medical understanding of the human individually and collectively. The thirty-six newly commissioned chapters range widely within and across disciplinary fields, always alert to the intersections between medicine, as broadly defined, and critical thinking. Each chapter offers suggestions for further reading on the issues raised, and each section concludes with an Afterword, written by a leading critic, outlining future possibilities for cutting-edge work in this area. Topics covered in this volume include: the affective body, biomedicine, blindness, breath, disability, early modern medical practice, fatness, the genome, language, madness, narrative, race, systems biology, performance, the postcolonial, public health, touch, twins, voice and wonder. Together the chapters generate a body of new knowledge and make a decisive intervention into how health, medicine and clinical care might address questions of individual, subjective and embodied experience.

Summary: There has been much speculation about a possible antibiotic Armageddon; this would be the result of having untreatable post-operative infections, and similarly untreatable complications after chemotherapy. The now famous "O'Neill Report" (https://amr-review.org/) suggests that more people could die from resistant bacterial infections by 2050 than from cancer. We are still learning about all the subtle drivers of antibiotic resistance, and realizing that we need a single "whole of health" co-ordinated policy. We ingest what we sometimes feed to animals. There do not seem to be any new classes of antibiotics on our horizon. Perhaps something that has been around "forever" will come to our rescue-bacteriophages! Nevertheless, we have to do things differently, use antibiotics appropriately, for the correct indication, for the correct duration and with the correct dose, and with that, practice good antibiotic stewardship. Whilst by no means comprehensive, this book does cover some of the many topics of antibiotic stewardship. It also addresses some of the older antibiotics, some new combinations, and even some new agents. Last, and by no means least, there are two excellent articles on bacteriophages.

For over four decades, textbooks have been enhanced with digital components, and today, it is almost impossible to find a textbook that does not contain any. Does this mean that textbooks have been fully digitalized and that we have reached a point where the integration of digital media into textbooks is the norm? Since there is no clear consensus on what is meant by the digitalization of textbooks, there is no simple answer to this question. This edited volume, therefore, attempts to clarify the respective terminology as a starting point. Through a multi-perspective approach and the joint conceptual considerations of various experts, it then provides insights into the historical processes of the increasing digitalization of textbooks, into evaluations of the current status quo, and into considerations of different and innovative design options for future interactive learning and teaching environments. In doing so, it identifies deficiencies and challenges and offers perspectives for new developments.

The volume “From the ‘White Paper’ of the Tuscany Region to Replicable Best Practices in the Reception of Persons in Need of International Protection” presents a selection of best practices implemented in the Tuscany region in the field of reception and integration policies for migrants and asylum seekers. This book is the result of research conducted within the European project “Global Social Work and Human Mobility: Comparative Studies on Local Government and Good Social Work Practices in the Euro-Mediterranean Region” (Global-ANSWER), dedicated to promoting knowledge exchange, expertise transfer and the dissemination of best practices in social work and human mobility in Europe. The volume adopts the framework of the “White Paper on Reception Policies for Asylum Seekers and International or Humanitarian Protection Holders,” released in 2017 by the Tuscany Region and Anci Toscana to consolidate principles, guidelines and best practices, as well as to provide a common framework aimed at improving reception services and integration policies for migrant citizens. Within this context, the volume’s primary goal is to identify good practices, analyze the context of their application, describe their characteristics and assess their potential for replication in other settings.

Despite increased innovation capacity, countries in Central, Eastern, and South-Eastern Europe (CESEE) face significant challenges threatening their growth and competitiveness, including severe skills shortages, uneven productivity, and barriers to commercialising innovation. The paper highlights the role of foreign direct investment in driving innovation, noting that firms established through greenfield investments exhibit higher productivity than their domestic counterparts. Contributing to the skills shortage are low public R&D spending, insufficient corporate investment in continuing education, and emigration. Limited collaboration between universities and businesses and a shortage of risk capital are key obstacles to bringing innovative ideas to market. To address these challenges, the paper recommends various measures to improve the availability of skilled labour, secure risk capital, foster collaboration between academia and industry, and enhance the overall business environment. Dashboards illustrate how innovation capacity and outcomes vary between CESEE countries, combining data from the EIB’s Investment Survey with a range of firm-level public and private datasets. This paper was developed through a collaboration among the Austrian National Bank (OeNB), the Vienna Institute for Economic Studies (wiiw), and the European Investment Bank (EIB). These institutions partnered on a broader study exploring competitiveness and future drivers of economic growth in CESEE countries that are EU members. Complementary papers on the productivity slowdown and shifting comparative advantages in trade have been published by wiiw.

This open access book is the first to provide an analysis of the Dutch paper industry over a period encompassing six centuries. Responding to a trend of renewed scholarly interest in paper industries and production, the book seeks to illuminate the factors behind this relatively small national industry’s centuries-long survival. Previous historical research has shown that sets of colonial, trade, merchant and family networks, tightly interwoven through a dense web of capital, were crucial for paper production and trade in early modern Europe. This book situates the Dutch paper industry within these overlapping contexts and their shifting dynamics over time, and historicizes the challenges and obstacles it had to overcome through four phases of capitalism: the rise of Dutch capitalism (1580–1815), Dutch monarchic liberalism (1815–1914), Fordism (1914–1980), and post-Fordism (1980 until now). Each chapter covers not only technological advancements in the industry, but its development alongside further determining dimensions, such as state-industry relations (industry policies), labour-capital relations (unions) and competition and cooperation, overall painting a picture of how the industry adapted to and endured changes in national and global networks surrounding the industry. This book will be of broad interest to scholars of economic and business history, as well as industrial history, political economy, and management studies.
