This study is the latest addition to a series of bulletins on education in foreign countries published by the U.S. Office of Education. The series is intended to fill multiple and increasing needs, both within and outside the Government; specifically, to provide assistance to registrars and admissions officers in their placement of foreign students, comprehensive data on foreign systems of education for comparative education and area specialists and scholars, and general information for a variety of individuals, groups, and programs. The present bulletin is the Office of Education's first one on education in Rumania, and the subject is presented in its historical and current political, economic, social, and cultural setting. The author has brought to the study painstaking scholarship and research in primary sources, including official documents; fluency in the Rumanian language; and a personal knowledge of the country before its conversion to a Communist state. He has used the most recent available sources, many of them in collections of the Library of Congress and the Office of Education. Some of the latter were acquired by the Office's Bureau of International Education through an informal exchange of publications with the Rumanian Ministry of Education. Others, comprising a set of Rumanian textbooks, were presented to the Bureau by the Ministry in 1960. This document is divided into nine chapters, as follows: (1) The Country's Background; (2) The Educational System; (3) Preprimary Education: Nurseries and Kindergartens; (4) General Education: Elementary and Secondary Schools; (5) Vocational and Technical Education; (6) Higher Education; (7) Teachers and the Teaching Profession; (8) Organizations for Children, Youths, and Adults; and (9) Evaluation and Conclusions. One of a series on library services to disadvantaged adults, this guide suggests several ways a library can provide books by mail services. Mail order delivery is a way of making the library's collection available to many who are unable or unwilling to visit the library building. The system can be handled by clerks or volunteers. Planning should include the library staff, the clientele to be served, the post office, and a catalog or some substitute method of contacting clients. The employment of many methods of publicity is necessary to research the client population. Program costs can range from $0.45 to $3.60 per book circulated. Four libraries with books by mail programs and 7 suggested background readings are listed. (PF)

This bibliography gives 186 citations for 155 studies using Horner's recent construct of fear of success (FOS). For each of the studies (many of which are available at the Fear of Success Collection, Sophia Smith Library, Smith College), information is given concerning (a) the number and sort of subject sample used in the study; (b) details of the measurement of FOS, including test materials, date of measurement, proportion of males and females showing FOS imagery, and correlates of FOS score; and (c) experimental manipulations where FOS was an independent or dependent variable. The descriptions are strongly data oriented, inlcuding summary statistics (means and variances) where appropriate for comparisons between studies and also for secondary analysis. This comparison is encouraged by the use of effect-size indexes. A section is given on the scoring of success avoidant thema in responses to verbal story cues as an introduction to the practical aspect of assessing a personality disposition from story imagery. The uses of Horner's particular concept of fear of success in professional papers are briefly discussed, and the viewpoints that Horner's work has been cited to substantiate have been summarized for over 70 such papers. The purpose of this selective, annotated bibliography is to reveal original sources of African tales and to trace their relationship to stories carried to the West Indies and the American South. The works cited are available in the collections of the Library of Congress. In addition to collections of folklore, a few linguistic, ethnological, and anthropological studies and some travel accounts and government reports containing tales are included. The collections and studies are divided into the following categories: sub-Saharan Africa, West Africa, Southern Africa, Central Africa, East Africa, the West Indies, and the United States. Each of these sections includes studies and collections for adults and collections for children. (LL)

The 283 materials cited in this bibliography are chiefly on Chicanas in the United States. However, books or articles that discuss Mexicanas or women in general and can be related to the experiences of Chicanas are also cited. Areas covered include the arts, education, sociology, economics, history, health, and literature. The materials are principally from the late sixties to 1976, although earlier publications are cited. Part I contains articles, student papers, dissertations, books, and documents pertaining to la mujer. Part II contains serials that are specifically about Chicanas, Mexicanas and women in general, or contain a variety of articles relevant to Chicanas. Both sections are arranged in alphabetical order by authors. A subject index is included. The items in this bibliography are available in the Chicano Studies Library's collection; full bibliographic information is given to help the user locate the material. (RC)

This non-exhaustive, partially annotated booklist of multicultural materials was compiled from library catalogs, reviews published for school libraries, publishers' and booksellers' catalogs, and a search of bookshops in Sydney, Adelaide, and Melbourne. It indicates what is currently available in Australia, and provides ideas for an initial school library collection. Organization is by the following categories which list all English materials about foreign cultures in alphabetical order by author: fiction; folktales, myths, and legends; customs, cookery, costumes, festivals, folkdances, and folksongs; and descriptive history and travel. An annotated listing of some examples of ethnic language materials, in alphabetical order by author, is also contained. A list of names and addresses of bookshops specializing in ethnic language materials; people who may be useful contacts; schools with ongoing multicultural programs; libraries that have ethnic collections; and reference materials that are useful for background information, is also included. This bibliography lists a library collection of educational resources on topics in nutrition which are available to elementary and secondary teachers who need information and instructional aids to help them implement nutrition education into the existing curriculum. Two hundred seven entries of nutrition education resources comprise this bibliography, including books, periodicals, filmstrips, slides, cassettes, bibliographies, teaching kits, programmed instruction units, curriculum guides, and games. This inventory describes the records of the 1977 South Carolina International Women's Year Conference which, as part of the archives and special collections of Winthrop College's Dacus Library, are available for research. Included in the collection are minutes, correspondence, financial records, resolutions, newspaper clippings, publications, press releases, brochures, questionnaires, speeches, tape recordings, and other records. This annotated bibliography is a selected guide to materials in the field of criminal justice that are available in the reference collections of the University Libraries at the State University of New York at Albany. The listing covers materials related to the topics of crime, juvenile delinquency, the criminal justice system, and penology; criminal law and procedure are not covered. Containing more than 100 entries, the bibliography is divided into four sections: indexes and abstracts, bibliographies, dictionaries/directories, and general works. Each section is arranged alphabetically by main entry with a limited number of cross references. Entries provide author (if applicable), title, publication information, area location information, classification number, and a brief annotation. Holdings information is alo given for all indexes and abstracts, and publications of the federal government are included. (Author)

This document is a catalog of the adult education sound and videotape recordings available at the E. S. Bird Library at Syracuse University. The collection was gathered for use by practitioners and educators of adults who are conducting research. In the library collection, each media item has been catalogued by title, series, subject, author, date, and speaker, using the same subject terms as materials for print. Along with recordings of programs conducted for adults, the project also contains recordings of adult education history for use by scholars of the adult and continuing education field. The oral history collection includes interviews with adult educators and recordings of speeches, conferences, and discussions. The four sections of the catalogue contain lists of sound recordings, video recordings, video cassette recordings, and an index of authors' names. Title, author, source, running time, and call numbers are given for the recordings. Information on how the recordings were collected is provided, along with suggestions for their use. (KC)

This guide is designed to assist librarians in the selection, acquisition, and use of a core-reference collection. Section 1, "Sources," is an annotated bibliography which focuses on the selection of those works that should constitute the main reference holdings in a small library or a desk (ready-reference) collection in a larger library. Sources have been limited to 76 currently available works which are priced reasonably and judged to be of excellent quality. An additional 50 reference works are cited in 27 notes. Topics covered are: (1) General Works; (2) Biography; (3) Religion; (4) Language; (5) Literature; (6) Visual and Performing Arts; (7) History; (8) Statistics; (9) Political Science and the Law; (10) Geography; (11) Careers and Education; (12) Business; (13) Social Customs, Home Life, and Sports; and (14) Science and Technology. Section 2, "Priority Ratings of Sources," is designed to help small libraries in the acquisition process. The sources listed in the bibliography are divided into 10 groups, with 20 sources, such as almanacs and encyclopedias, arranged according to required frequency of purchase (e.g., annually, biennially). The remaining 59 works are arranged in their order of importance. Section 3, "Reference Works Exercises," is intended for library workers new to the reference staff or more experienced workers who wish to review the use of basic reference tools. This book is an annotated bibliography of recommended print materials for English-speaking adults (18 years of age and over) reading at the seventh-grade level or below. More than 95 percent of the titles are paperbacks; hardbacks are indicated in the annotations. The titles are selected for their broad appeal to the general adult new reader. (All recommended titles were in print as of August 1986.) Recommended titles are categorized as fiction (general fiction, mystery and horror, science fiction, classics, and folklore) and nonfiction (groupings in a very general Dewey subject classification). This directory of resources for disabled adults was compiled to assist state directors of the federally funded, state-administered Adult Education Program as well as administrators and practitioners in providing services for adults with disabilities. The first two sections include 15 federal and nonfederal organizations serving adults with various types of disabilities. Subsequent sections focus on adults with the following specific disabilities: mobility impaired (8 organizations); deaf and hearing impaired (9 organizations); blind and visually impaired (12 organizations); learning disabled (7 organizations); mentally retarded (6 organizations); and mentally ill (3 organizations). Each entry provides the organization's name, address, and telephone number; a brief program description; and the resources available. Resources listed include publications, library collections, information clearinghouses, service and educational programs, conferences, technical assistance, networking efforts, research and demonstration programs, and advertising campaigns. Tribology is the science and technology of interacting surfaces in relative motion. It incorporates a number of scientific fields, including friction, wear, lubrication, materials science, and various branches of surface physics and surface chemistry. Tribology forms a vital part of engineering science. The interacting surfaces may be on machinery or engine parts, moving joints, bearings, on tools and on machines and the parts on which they work. This guide lists information resources on tribology which are available in the collections of the Library of Congress. This is not intended to be a comprehensive bibliography. The information references are classified as introductions, texts, handbooks, proceedings, abstracts, journals, articles, reports, bibliographies, and materials. About 60 items are listed. (Author/YP)
