This chapter summarizes and discusses some guides for an agenda for public policies and investment in science and technology on the várzea derived from all papers, sections, and debates that occurred during a conference on the matter. Also, it traces a short historical context of the investment in science and technology in the last decade in the Amazon, highlighting the demands and challenges that are to be faced in the development of the várzea. An integrated research agenda is presented with efforts to assess the many dimensions of conservation and development for the region. Finally, other detailed guides are stressed for each specific research area section, such as aquatic and terrestrial resource management, social and demographic dynamics, and socioenvironmental conservation strategies in Conservation Units (UCs). This paper starts out by introducing the ″Landscapes″ category at the Joint International Conference on Ambient Intelligence (AmI-2010) and provides an overview over the two sessions. The main part of the paper presents a framework for the role of Ambient Intelligence in the development of the cities of the future. This includes the integration of real and virtual worlds resulting in Hybrid Cities and their transformation into Smart Cities. In the context, it is argued that the technological development has to be monitored by guidelines and goals for maintaining and improving the quality of life leading to what is called Humane Cities, addressing, e.g., social awareness and privacy, trust and identity. In this article we discuss the strategic use of visitor tracking data in the good management of visitor attractions and tourist destinations, also highlighting the challenges that could be presented by tracking visitors in different attraction types and sites. Based on the practice and results from a tracking experiment in the PortAventura theme park, an enclosed and controlled environment, we then illustrate the actual and potential uses that attraction managers can do of this information, proposing a number of logistic and technical solutions to enhance the use of tracking data in this specific type of attractions. Finally, the paper present a future research agenda into visitor spatial behaviour using tracking technologies in semi-open and open environments other than theme parks and leisure attractions. HCI is reinventing itself. No longer only about being user-centered, it has set its sights on pastures new, embracing a much broader and far-reaching set of interests. From emotional, eco-friendly, embodied experiences to context, constructivism and culture, HCI research is changing apace: from what it looks at, the lenses it uses and what it has to offer. Part of this is as a reaction to what is happening in the world; ubiquitous technologies are proliferating and transforming how we live our lives. We are becoming more connected and more dependent on technology. The home, the crèche, outdoors, public places and even the human body are now being experimented with as potential places to embed computational devices, even to the extent of invading previously private and taboo aspects of our lives. In this paper, I examine the diversity of lifestyle and technological transformations in our midst and outline some `difficult΄ questions these raise together with alternative directions for HCI research and practice. Organizational learning, knowledge transfer and knowledge sharing are core components of the retail internationalization process. However, organizational learning is not solely derived from examples of success - we also learn from failure. Divestment is an intrinsic feature of retail internationalization, and has recently become a focus for academic research. This paper considers the growing body of academic work on international retail divestment at both the country and firm level, and assesses how we have examined this activity through the construction of incident based datasets and in-depth case studies of individual company experiences. This review concludes that further research is needed to provide a deeper understanding of this element of the internationalization process and suggests a potential agenda for future research. Whilst technology may fundamentally change how we handle spatial information, the underlying principles of effective visualisation and cartographic design remain the same. Generalisation is but one essential piece of the jigsaw, integrated among a set of techniques and technologies that extend from capture and storage through to visualisation and interaction. There are many challenging issues in generalisation research: from modelling the complex decision making processes inherent in the art and science of cartography, through to interaction models that support easy interaction and exploration of geographic phenomenon across a continuum of scales. Moderately high levels of automation are now achievable but there remains an exciting set of research challenges - challenges that are evolving in response to the disruptive nature of IT. In this chapter we present a set of challenges as a pointer to a research agenda that includes among other things, generalisation of global datasets, better evaluation methodologies, and better integration of reasoning about space in order to support autonomous solutions in map generalisation. The importance of all research connected with generalisation is built around the concept that scale is intrinsic to ideas of geographic meaning and is therefore critical to geographical problem solving. Children with terminal illness receive substantial amounts of care from their parents within their home, a palliative care facility or general hospital. Whilst there is a long history of research exploring child and family experiences and coping styles within these settings, the focus has not been on fathers' participation in care-giving. This phenomenon can be explained by traditional sex-role socialisations whereby men are ostensibly conditioned as breadwinners and mothers remain embedded as the primary carers for children, particularly when illness arises. Nevertheless, nurses report that men do provide direct care-giving or seek to be more involved in caring for their child. This review offers opportunities for health professionals to reflect on the significance of gender in parenting the terminally ill child and to develop empathy for men experiencing difficulties in their role as care-givers. As there is little literature available on this topic, this paper portrays men's experiences and importantly the barriers they encounter in meeting their desire to care. The approach provides a suitable basis for developing a research agenda to promote competencies and relevance for fathers in their role as care-giver. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
