Abstract

Summary: In this reprint, the underlying damage mechanisms of materials used under extreme conditions are explored using computer simulation and modelling methods, presenting important information to predict the lifetime of related facilities. The scope of this reprint embraces numerical work on material responses to extreme conditions, such as high-speed impact or loading, neutron or ion irradiation, and high-pressure and/or high-temperature environments. Related simulation results based on the first principle method, molecular dynamics, and finite element methods are reported. Results of various topics have been reported by papers collected in this book, for example, including fitting a better empirical potential, diffusion of atoms on surface, corrosion, interaction between different defects, elastic constants calculations, effect of hot press forming on collision toughness and energy distribution, and influence of radiation defects on the thermo-mechanical properties of UO2. Furthermore, a review about the experiments and models for the effect of strain rate on NiTi shape memory alloys (SMAs) has also been included in this reprint. These new results present new knowledge for understanding the damage mechanisms of materials under extreme conditions, which would be useful not only for researchers in these fields but also for new readers to learn about basic concepts and current research progress to better understand the response of materials under extreme conditions.

Abstract

Summary: In response to the demanding requirements of different sectors, such as construction, transportation, energy, manufacturing, and mining, new generations of microalloyed steels are being developed and brought to market. The addition of microalloying elements, such as niobium, vanadium, titanium, boron, and/or molybdenum, has become a key tool in the steel industry to reach economically-viable grades with increasingly higher mechanical strength, toughness, good formability, and weldable products. The challenges that microalloying steel production faces can be solved with a deeper understanding of the effects that these microalloying additions and combinations of them have during the different steps of the steelmaking process.

7. Mo, Sb and Se Removal from Scrubber Effluent of a Waste Incinerator.

Abstract

Common physicochemical treatment of industrial wastewater is not very efficient regarding the removal of the oxyanion forming elements selenium, molybdenum and antimony. An industrial case is described where effluents from the wet treatment of flue gases from a rotary kiln for the incineration of industrial waste, contain variable amounts of the elements mentioned. The effluent of the scrubbers is neutralized, coagulated and flocculated. Mercury is removed by precipitation with TMT. The installation shows satisfactory results, complying with the regulations for common cations. The effluent of the settling tank still contains variable concentrations of selenium, molybdenum and antimony and the overall removal efficiency is not reproducible for these elements. Laboratory experiments are presented for the removal by coprecipitation and the results are discussed. Possible treatment methods are selected and evaluated in a matrix that may help in the selection of methods for the simultaneous removal of oxyanion forming elements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Hard turning is the latest technology and is used to turn hard materials by using cutting tools like CBN and PCBN. Certain hard materials like titanium, Inconel and stainless steel are pronounced as difficult to cut materials. The superior cutting tools effectively machine such hard materials and produces desirable surface roughness with less tool wear. The present research was carried on hard Cr -Mo alloy steel namely SCM 440 material by turning process. The hardness of the work materials were maintained between 45 to 55 HRC. The CBN produced low surface roughness and PCBN tool produced high surface roughness. The formation of crater wear was less in PCBN tool than CBN tool. Build up layer (BUL) was due to diffusion of work material on CBN and PCBN tools. PCBN tool withstand heat better than CBN. Formation of built up edge (BUE) is concern on PCBN tool and is less than CBN tool. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

10. ELECTROLYTIC Ni-BASED COMPOSITE COATINGS CONTAINING MOLYBDENUM AND SILICON FOR HYDROGEN EVOLUTION REACTION.

Abstract

Ni + Mo + SiNi composite coatings were prepared by codeposition of Ni with powders of molybdenum and silicon (covered with the electroless plated nickel – SiNi) on a steel substrate from the nickel bath in which Mo and SiNi particles were suspended by stirring. Deposition was conducted under galvanostatic conditions. Deposits were characterized by the presence of Mo and Si phases embedded into the nickel matrix. For comparison Ni + Mo composite coatings without silicon were obtained under comparable conditions. Incorporation of Mo and SiNi powders into electrolytic nickel matrix causes an increase in the real surface area of the deposits. The obtained composite coatings were tested as electrode materials for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in an alkaline environment. Electrochemical characterization of the composites was carried out by steady-state polarization method and EIS measurements. It was ascertained, that Ni + Mo + SiNi coatings are characterized by enhanced electrochemical activity for this process which was confirmed by considerable decrease in the hydrogen evolution overpotential compared to nickel electrode as well as to the Ni + Mo composite coatings. Basing on the results of EIS measurements the rate constants of the HER were determined. The calculated values of surface roughness factor allowed to study the apparent and intrinsic activity of investigated coatings for the HER. It was stated that the improvement of the electrocatalytic performance of Ni + Mo and Ni + Mo + SiNi composite coatings could be attributed both to the increase in their real surface area as well as to the synergetic effect of molybdenum with the nickel matrix.
