Abstract

Multilingual learners in Grades K-12 are often overidentified or underidentified for special education. The third edition of this groundbreaking text offers a better way to meet the needs of multilingual learners: by creating a culturally and linguistically responsive multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) and implementing a continuum of services that meets the needs of the whole child. Shifting away from traditional ways that schools address the needs of students who experience challenges, the new edition of this text takes a strengths-based approach to supporting multilingual students and focuses on the complex issues that affect a multilingual learner's development. Chapters have been fully updated to reflect the latest best practices and reorganized to better align with MTSS. Educators and other school-based professionals will be fully prepared to: (1) Form collaborative MTSS teams that blend the diverse expertise of staff members; (2) Evaluate and enhance the learning environment for multilingual learners; (3) Gather extensive data about six critical factors in students' home and school life, from previous schooling experiences to cross-cultural factors; (4) Authentically assess the strengths of multilingual learners; (5) Create a continuum of services that addresses the individual needs of each student; (6) Plan effective instruction and intervention using a multilingual lens; and (7) Monitor the effectiveness of support strategies and programming for multilingual learners.

Abstract

Climate change and climate denial have remained largely off the radar in literacy and social studies education. This book addresses that gap with the design of the "Climate Denial Inquiry Model" (CDIM) and clear examples of how educators and students can confront two forms of climate denial: "science denial" and "action denial." The CDIM highlights how critical literacies specifically designed for climate denial texts can be used alongside eco-civic practices of deliberation, reflexivity, and counter-narration to help students discern corporate, financial, and politically motivated roots of climate denial and to better understand efforts to misinform the American public, sow doubt and distrust of basic scientific knowledge, and erode support for evidence-based policymaking and collective civic action. With an emphasis on inquiry-based teaching and learning, the book also charts a path from destructive stories-we-live-by that are steeped in climate denial (humans are separate from nature, the primary goal of society is economic growth without limits, nature is a resource to be used and exploited) to "ecojustice stories-to-live by" that invite teachers and students to consider more just and sustainable futures. This book features: (1) An innovative model to help educators address climate science denial and climate action denial; (2) Clear examples of how to integrate critical literacies designed specifically for climate denial; (3) Concrete climate- and inquiry-based teaching and learning pathways in literacy and social studies with much potential for connections across other content areas; and (4) A path from destructive stories steeped in climate denial to more just and sustainable futures.

Abstract

Amateur wrestling has had a tremendous growth in the past 10 to 15 years. The authors of this manual accumulated wrestling drills from hundreds of contacts with outstanding wrestlers and coaches throughout the country, in addition to their personal input. The manual can be used as a guide for teaching fundamental and advanced wrestling drills. Drills described are categorized as: conditioning, takedown, top man, bottom man, 100 percent, on-mat-facing, out-of-pins, favorite drills of successful coaches, practice routines, warm-ups or pre-match, leg wrestling, and give-a-position. A wrestling organizational pattern is given along with points of emphasis and definitions of terminology used in the book. Along with the drill explanations are 90 illustrations to help teacher and student visualize the positions. (SK)
