- Abstract
Promote the mental health of preschool children in care by providing nurturing environments and relationships. Common Psychological Disorders in Young Children is an easy-to-use guide that will help providers recognize and cope with the symptoms and behaviors associated with ADHD, autism, anxiety, and other disorders providers may face. Learn to notice behaviors that may require referral for diagnostic screening, and better understand how providers can help the child learn, even without a formal diagnosis. Common Psychological Disorders includes information on causes, symptoms, behavior, and medications. It also provides classroom and child care setting strategies, and tips on communicating with parents. The book's format is consistent with headings used in the DC:0-3R and the DSM-IV-TR, the standard diagnostic guide from the American Psychiatric Association. Following an introduction, this book is divided into two parts. Part I, Understanding and Responding to Psychological Disorders in Young Children, presents: (1) Factors in the Development of Mental Health in Children; (2) Observing Children's Behavior for Signs and Symptoms of Mental Illness; (3) Classroom and Child Care Setting Strategies; and (4) Partnering with Families. Part II, Descriptions and Diagnostic Criteria for Common Psychological Disorders Introduction, concludes with: (5) Attachment Disturbances; (6) Regulatory Disorders; (7) Anxiety Disorders; (8) Mood Disorders; (9) Attention-Deficit and Disruptive-Behavior Disorders; (10) Pervasive Developmental Disorders; (11) Sleeping, Eating, and Elimination Disorders; and (12) Childhood-Onset Schizophrenia. The book also includes four appendices: (1) Social/Emotional Developmental Continuum; (2) Common Social/Emotional Screening Tools for Young Children; (3) Common Medications Prescribed for Children to Reduce Psychiatric Symptoms; and (4) Additional Resources for Families and Early Childhood Professionals. Also includes a bibliography and an index.
