Chapter 10 of the book "Advanced Techniques for Assessment Surface Topography" is presented. Discussed are the correlations of the tribological behavior of sheet steel during deep drawing, in particular galling, with surface topography from a three-dimensional (3D) point of view. Also highlighted are the results of a set of experiments performed in order to study the effect of different test systems and test conditions on the capability of galling testing.

We present a rendering engine for displaying graphical user interfaces on multiple devices. The renderer interprets a standardized XML-based user interface description language: the User Interface Markup Language (UIML). A generic architecture for the renderer is defined so that deployment of the engine on different devices implies only little effort. We show that our rendering engine can be used on iDTV set-top boxes, mobile phones, PDAs and desktop PCs, and smoothly integrates with both local and remote application logic. As a test bed for the UIML specification we also explore support for extensions to UIML that enable the user interface designer to maximize accessibility and target multiple devices and different types of users at once [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The development of indicators on violence and related data collection regarding missing and sexually exploited children and trafficking in human beings is essential in preparing and supporting evidence-based policy making in the said areas. At present, however, there is no comprehensive matrix of relevant indicators, characteristics and variables, standardised for the entire EU, regarding the said phenomena. Various research efforts to prepare proper EU monitoring on the matter are described, leading up to a proposal for standardised EU templates and a blueprint for EU-wide collection of integrated statistical information and strategic analysis at both member state and EU (cross-country) level on the phenomena concerned. In silico docking techniques are being used to investigate the complementarity at the molecular level of a ligand and a protein target. As such, docking studies can be used to identify the structural features that are important for binding and for in silico screening efforts in which suitable binding partners can be identified. Here we describe a practical approach for setting up docking simulations using different docking programs. We also cover the analysis and rescoring of the obtained docking poses. Possible pitfalls in the docking studies are discussed and hints are provided to resolve commonly occurring problems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ground-state properties of neutron-rich 29,31Mg have been recently measured at ISOLDE/CERN in the context of shell structure far from stability. By combining the results of β-NMR and hyperfine- structure measurements unambiguous values of the nuclear spin and magnetic moment of 31Mg are obtained. Iπ = 1=2+ and μ = −0:88355(15) µN can be explained only by an intruder ground state with at least 2p-2h excitations, revealing the weakening of the N = 20 shell gap in this nucleus. The extensible Markup Language (XML) is gaining a lot of attention in the Internet world and is adopted by major companies (IBM, Microsoft, Oracle). XML, the open-standards child of SGML, promises to provide platform- and language neutral data encapsulation and separates application logic from application data. Meanwhile, various object-oriented technologies and standards such as Java and CORBA have also progressed rapidly in the past few years. Java is being presented as the perfect partner for XML. Java supports the development of Web-aware, platform-neutral applications, and XML is a platform-neutral document description meta-language. But doesn't CORBA promise exactly the same? This paper describes the XML and CORBA ‘approaches', and the synergies and/or competition between these technologies, taking into account the "philosophy" of each approach. Different criteria are identified where comparison is possible and relevant, such as: specification (e.g. expressive power), deployment (parsing, marshalling, scalability), and tools. XML is the next step in Web-protocols (after IP, HTML). It is concluded that XML can in conjunction with a multitude of other protocols provide the same functionality as CORBA, but will only replace CORBA in those cases where using CORBA is undesirable. This review of the superluminal motion phenomenon in Active Galaxies takes a largely statistical approach. Predictions for the apparent velocity distribution under simple beaming models are presented and compared to the observations. The potential applications for tests of unification models and for cosmology (source counts, measurements of H0 and q0) are discussed. First results from a large homogeneous survey are presented. The data do not show compelling evidence for the existence of intrinsically different populations of galaxies, BL Lac objects, or quasars. βapp in the range (1−−5) h−1 occur with roughly equal frequency; higher values, up to βapp=10 h−1 are rather more scarce than appeared to be the case from earlier work, which evidently concentrated on sources which are not representative of the general population. The βapp distribution suggests that there might be a skewed distribution of Lorentz factors over the sample, with a peak at γb≈2 h−1 and a tail up to at least γb≈10 h−1. There appears to be a clearly rising upper envelope to the βapp distribution when plotted as a function of observed 5 GHz luminosity; a combination of source counts and the apparent velocity statistics in a larger sample could provide much insight into the properties of radio jet sources. The unique 0.26 c stellar jets of SS 433 are reviewed, starting at the binary system, and then, using a natural separation by observing wavelength, following them out to successively larger scales over eight orders of magnitude. Recent work is emphasized in this review, and care is taken to provide up-to-date entry points into the extensive older literature on SS 433.
