- Abstract
In recent years, higher education has witnessed the entry of a new breed of postsecondary education providers. These institutions have reshaped the traditional views of the function and purpose of higher education. For-profit education institutions provide a small but rapidly growing segment of the student population with the knowledge and skills required to compete in the current job market. This annotated bibliography provides insight into many of the issues that challenge the future of the U.S. higher education system. It is based on a systematic review of the generally available literature conducted in early 2003. The literature search covered the years 1996-2003, from the recent emergence of the for-profit, degree-granting institutions to the present. General findings from the review of literature indicate that a lack of research in the area of for-profit higher education exists, accounting for the limited number of research-based articles in the area. The articles in this review are arranged alphabetically by author or issuing agency. Dissertations are listed separately, at the end of the bibliography. Each entry contains a bibliographic reference conforming to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. Summaries of each entry, along with major findings or assertions, follow each bibliographic reference.

-
University of Southern California, Los Angeles. School of Library Science., Frohmberg, Katherine A., Frohmberg, Katherine A., and University of Southern California, Los Angeles. School of Library Science.
- Abstract
Special libraries in Southern California and the San Francisco Bay Area who were members of the University of Southern California (USC) School of Engineering Industrial Associate program were surveyed on their use of the USC program and other similar programs. The questionnaire was designed to discover the attitudes and needs of the Industrial Associate members in California toward USC's library service. It was found that proximity to the parent university and the size of its collection were the prime determinants of special library use. A further analysis by size of special library staff showed that larger libraries tended to use USC's Industrial Associate Programs more than smaller libraries and also to be more aware of specialized information resources within their area. As a result of the survey recommendations were made concerning fee structures, financial support of the library, photoduplication, and communications among the Industrial Associates users, the Industrial Associates office, and the library. Appendices include the questionnaire, tabulation of responses, USC Library Guidelines, a 41-item bibliography, and a copy of the Industrial Association Brochure. (Author/DS)

- Abstract
Aimed at retired persons, employers and potential employers of senior volunteers, and students of gerontology, the book examines the Older Volunteer Project of the Ethel Percy Andrus Gerontology Center, University of Southern California, 1973-75. The 40 Andrus volunteers were between 49 and 78 years old, generally highly educated, with 66% having held professional jobs. The project demonstrated how retired adults can enter an organization that employs mostly paid, non-retired personnel, generate work, and gain acceptance in that work setting. Offering historical flashbacks, and discussing principles, procedures, and participant reactions, chapters include: (1) "Here We Are Now", describing the project's progress, with volunteer comments; (2) the Worker/Volunteer, giving a profile; (3) The Setting, discussing the volunteers' adjustment to the Center and the Center's adjustment to them, with volunteer comments; (4) The Work (Tasks), tracing task development, with volunteer comments; (5) New Roles for Senior Volunteers in Organizations, presenting an adaptable model for older volunteer program organization; and (6) Utilization of Older Volunteers in Organizations: Issues and Potentials, reviewing key issues. Appended material includes: 12 tables and 7 figures presenting data on volunteers and the project; 2 reference lists; and, a subject index. (LH)

- Abstract
The role of the Teacher Corps team leader involves not only the training and supervision of corpsmen, but also the facilitation of community involvement and intrateam relations. During the preservice program, the team leader helps to plan the program, initiate the corpsmen, lay the groundwork in the community and local school district, and provide assistance in the self-discovery process of interns. Growth and development of the team is the responsibility of the leader and includes aspects such as morale, teamwork, and productivity. The leader must facilitate a positive relationship between the team and the neighborhood by helping to establish organizations for cooperative effort. In the supervision of student teachers, the team leader acts as a stabilizing influence, interprets district policy, selects cooperating teachers, and evaluates interns. (HMD)

- Abstract
The selected bibliography contains about 400 references taken from a keysort file of more than 45,000 references, compiled from commercially available data bases and published sources, relevant to gerontology. Those of questionable accuracy were checked or deleted during the verification process. Most references are in English and were selected from the years 1959-74. Earlier items or foreign titles were included if they were regarded as significant or contained unique data. In many cases the foreign titles include English abstracts in the originals. Information on the composition of the keysort file and on the availability of the references is given. Items are grouped according to the following topics and subtopics: (1) Intellectual Function, (2) Age Group Differences (General Studies and Theoretical Implications of Intellectual Development), (3) Variables Involved in Individual and Group IQ Differences (Social-Psychological Variables, Biopsychological Variables, and Pharmacological Effects), (4) Pathological States and Intelligence (General Studies and Diagnosis with IQ Tests), and (5) Cognitive Functioning and Intelligence (Cognitive Style, Learning, Memory, and Problem Solving and Creativity). University of Southern California, Los Angeles. Annenberg School of Communications. and Filep, Robert T.
- Abstract
The purpose of this bibliography is two fold: To review the 1970-75 literature on communication satellites with particular emphasis on social applications, experiments, and evaluation; and to provide future satellite planners and evaluators with a convenient overview of specific experiences. The review includes documents dealing with past, current, and planned applications, experiments, and evaluations of domestic and international satellite projects. Many of the sources give data on types of users, numbers of individuals involved, estimated cost per instruction hour, and program content. A section is provided wherein key words developed for each annotation are grouped by categories for reference. No attempt is made to include every published work in the annotated section, nor do the authors claim to have accessed all written material in this rapidly developing field. However, to assist the user who requires further investigation or information, a selected general bibliography is also provided. (Author/HB)

- Abstract
This is the first of three volumes which comprise a review of the social, psychological, and biological aspects of aging. This volume organizes, evaluates, and interprets research data, concepts, theories, and issues in aging from the perspectives of the various social sciences. Intended for use by researchers, professional practitioners, policymakers, and students, the "Handbook" is organized into five sections. The first section, "The Social Aspects of Aging," considers the origins and scope of interest in aging as a social phenomenon, some of the presuppositions that underlie the study of age-related changes and the life span context in which aging takes place. A second section, "Aging and Social Structure," deals with changes in the age structure of populations, with the role and status of the aged in various societies, and with contemporary intergenerational relations. In the third section, "Aging and Social Systems," the contributors discuss differences among age strata in a variety of social systems, and how aging persons affect and are in turn affected by family life, housing and institutional arrangements, the economy, patterns of work, retirement and leisure, and the law and political systems. In the fourth section, "Aging and Interpersonal Behavior," the authors consider social networks, role changes through the life span, and death and dying. The final section on "Aging and Social Intervention" treats the political and strategic issues involved in contemporary and future societal efforts to provide and deploy income, health and social services, and other social resources to the aging. 28. Implied Orders As A Basis For Tailored Testing. Final Report. Technical Report No. 6.
- Author
-
University of Southern California, Los Angeles. Dept. of Psychology. and Cliff, Norman
- Abstract
The research from a four-year project of implied orders tailored testing is summarized. The method of implied orders testing combines the principles of ordinal measurement with the concept of the Guttman scale as an ideal. The basic principle for dichotomous items is that either an item is missed and "dominates" a person or it is answered correctly and the person "dominates" the item. From the persons-by-items matrices, it is possible to compute a single ordered dimension for both persons and items. In a tailored testing context with an incomplete data matrix, it is possible to compute the implied order for the missing data. These procedures have been applied to both group and individual testing situations and to Monte Carlo and other simulations as well as to data generated by human subjects. The research includes the production of computer programs for tailored testing, contributions to test theory from an ordinal perspective, and a pattern for research on all types of tailored testing. Recommendations for additional research projects are included. (Author/CTM)

-
University of Southern California, Los Angeles. Ethel Percy Andrus Gerontology Center., Kerschner, Paul A., Kerschner, Paul A., and University of Southern California, Los Angeles. Ethel Percy Andrus Gerontology Center.
- Abstract
This monograph seeks to bring understanding to one component of the advocacy field, that of advocacy and the aged, by overviewing this component through a series of articles. (Advocacy is an activity by which changes can be effected in a power structure to improve a subgroup's situation.) There are four parts to the document: part 1, entitled "Issues," contains an overview of advocacy as a social movement. In this part, Mark Berger views major philosophical approaches to the advocacy issue. Paul A. Kerschner explores the theory of pluralism as it applies to the aged. Neal E. Cutler examines common misconceptions regarding partisan political behavior on the part of older adults. Stephen McConnell, Dorothy Fleisher, Mel Spear, and Jodi Cohn discuss major organizational and policy problems which constitute the aging/advocacy issue. In part 2, entitled "Experiences," Margaret E. Kuhn, Hobart C. Jackson, and Barbara Kaplan provide case studies on advocacy by and for the elderly. In part 3, "Strategies," students of administration, planning, and community organizations are provided with a discussion of requisite tools for implementing advocacy efforts. Paul Nathanson and John L. Lamb focus on advocacy and the necessity of legal services. James A. Danowski emphasizes the use of media as a strategy for elderly advocate organizations. A selected bibliography is included in the final section. (CSS)
