The article discusses the problems facing U.S. publishers and publishing companies that was triggered by the late 2004 announcement of Google Inc. to scan the book collections of five libraries into its search engines. Concerns over copyright infringement led to law suits filed by the Association of American Publishers (AAP) and the Authors Guild against Google separately on the ground that it violated copyright laws by making copies of copyright-protected title without permission. Among other challenges facing the publishing industry are the increasing sales of used books, the bankruptcy and downsizing issue of several publishing companies.
