The article presents an encyclopedia entry for bone marrow and hematopoiesis. Hematopoiesis refers to the process of new blood cell formulation. It offers information on the characteristics of hematopoietic cells as harvested from the bone marrow. Several in vitro test systems used in assaying the toxicity to human hematopoietic and hematopoietic supportive cells are presenetd, including colony-forming unit assays.
