Architectural elements of the house include dressed limestone for the lower floor, flagstones on the terrace, iron railings, as well as hardwood and brick columns.

A historical background of the Harmony Hall located in Saint Mary, Jamaica shows that this building became the manse for the local Methodist Church, and later on became the residence of Sherlock family and then the Lobban family. The building was restored under the guidance of architect Ben Fales of CAST and its Jamaican architecture was preserved. Additional features to the house in 1987 were an octagonal tower with gazebos, an art gallery and the Toscannini's Italian restaurant.

The building was restored as a center for the craft industry after its acquisition by the Jamaica National House in 1967. According to records, the development of the property as a heritage center was supported by various food shops in the courtyard that served Jamaican foods.

Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs) are heterogeneous systems whose composition and microstructure vary in space, thus creating a resulting gradient in properties and functions which can be tailored to the prescribed thermo-mechanical loading conditions [1]. Moreover, FGMs allow to fully exploit the peculiar properties of the ingredient materials, whilst the smooth change in composition and microstructure minimizes the stresses which can arise when heterogeneous phases are directly coupled [2, 3]. Though the study of fracture mechanics in FGMs is complicated by their intrinsic microstructural complexity, a good understanding of crack initiation and propagation is required in order to ensure a higher reliability of functionally graded structural components.
