Information about the information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure in the Republic of Korea from the book "Digital Review of Asia Pacific 2009-2010" is presented. It describes the ICT and telecommunications infrastructure, communication networks, and Internet penetration in the country. Also discussed are South Korea' main ICT institutions and ICT-related industries, key ICT policies and strategies, digital content programs, online services, open source software, and efforts for ICT research and development.

We present a simple receding meniscus induced method to capture non-adherent yeast cells onto microwells inside microfluidic channels. Microwells were fabricated by capillary molding onto glass substrate using a UV curable polyurethane acrylate (PUA) solution, leading to well-defined, robust microstructures. A cell suspension of the budding yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, was introduced into microfluidic channels by capillary filling and a receding meniscus was subsequently generated by evaporation. As the meniscus receded, one to five yeast cells were spontaneously captured onto microwells by lateral capillary force created at the thin region of the meniscus. Using this cell-based platform, we observed the response of yeast cells upon stimulation by a mating pheromone (α-factor) by monitoring the expression of green fluorescent protein (GFP) with time. It was observed that α- factor triggered the expression of GFP at 60 min after stimulation and the fluorescence intensity was sustained for additional 60 min without changes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the rapidly increasing popularity of XML, an effective method to transmit XML data over wireless broadcasting environments is urgently required. In this paper, a novel XML data streaming method for wireless broadcasting environments, is proposed. An XML stream is organized to enable a selective access scheme for simple XPath queries, by borrowing the path summary technique, which was originally devised for indexing semi-structured data. In order to utilize structure information as an XML stream index, the structure information and text values of an XML document are separated. In experimental results, the proposed method demonstrates superior performance over previous approaches with regard to both access and tuning time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A fluorescence polarization assay can be used to evaluate the strength of a protein-protein interaction. A green fluorescent protein variant is fused to one of the protein partners. The formation of a complex is then deduced from an increase in fluorescence polarization, and the equilibrium dissociation constant of the complex is determined in a homogeneous aqueous environment. The assay is demonstrated by using the interaction of the S-protein and S-peptide fragments of ribonuclease A as a case study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
