The reciprocating engine mechanism is often analysed, since it serves all the demands required for the convenient utilization of natural sources of energy, such as steam, gaseous and liquid fuels, for generation of power. Further, it is widely employed as suitable mechanism for pumps and compressors. In this paper the complete kinematic and combined static and inertia force analysis of a horizontal, single -- cylinder, four-stroke internal combustion engine is discussed. The analytical approach is used as it is more accurate and is less time consuming if it is programmed for the computer solution. The data for the analysis of the engine has been taken from the available literature. The present investigation furnishes the complete kinematic history of the driven links and the bearing loads for the complete working cycle of the engine mechanism. The complete force analysis of the engine is simplified by a summation of the static forces and inertia forces ignoring the friction forces which makes the analysis linear. The computer program is prepared in fortran language for both kinematic and dynamic analysis of the engine at the crank interval of 150. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chapter 10 of the book "2008 ASHRAE Handbook: Heating, Ventilating and Air-Conditioning Systems and Equipment" is presented. It discusses the application of the steam systems as a source of heat on conditioned space and in heat exchangers for heating domestic hot water. It also cites the use of steam as heat source for cooling processes like single-stage and two-stage absorption refrigeration machines. It provides some of the properties and advantages of steam including its capacity to transmit heat efficiently with little change in temperature.

Keep up your bright swords, for the dew will rust them. Water is the most common substance on Earth, and it no doubt has the best known of all chemical formulas: H2O. It is one of only two liquids that occur naturally in appreciable quantities, the other example being petroleum. More than three quarters of the Earth's surface is covered with water, and if it were not for this compound, there would be no life. About 60% of the weight of the human body is water, it being present in the interior of every cell. It also accounts for the bulk of such specialized aqueous media as blood and mucous. The central role played by water was of course clear from the earliest times, and Aristotle regarded it as one of the four elements, together with air, fire and earth. Its chemical structure became clear in the late eighteenth century, when Henry Cavendish and Antoine Lavoisier established that it is a combination of hydrogen (discovered by Cavendish in 1766) and oxygen (discovered by Joseph Priestley in 1774). Cavendish burned measured quantities of these two gases together and found that they produced water, no change in total weight having occurred during the reaction. The reverse process, decomposition of water into hydrogen and oxygen, was first achieved by Lavoisier. This paper presents the thermodynamic equilibrium predictions for steam reforming of vegetable oil in a thermal plasma reformer. An optimal operating condition has been chosen at temperature of 800°C and mole flow ratio of vegetable oil to water of 1:18 using software simulation. The predicted results show that mole fraction of hydrogen reaches, respectively, 61% and 63% on wet and dry bases for proton exchange membrane fuel cell applications. In addition, the total mole fractions of fuels for solid oxide fuel cell applications approaches 95% and even over 98% on wet and dry bases, respectively. These predicted data will be compared with experimental data conducted with a 1kWe thermal plasma reformer at Clean Energy R&D Center, Da-Yeh University in Taiwan, R.O.C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presented the situations of steam piping system in our local steel enterprises firstly. The main problems are as follows: (1) serious loss of steam; (2) low efficiency in utilization of steam; (3) passive regulation of steam. Secondly, according to those pervading problems, and on the basis of analyzing systematic structure, an optimal regulation LP model of steam system is proposed by means of Liner Programming method. The model is suitable for multiple suppliers, differentiated demanders, as well as steam regulation limited by power generation. Finally, one steel enterprise is taken as an example, and an empirical study on the result of optimal model is carried out from the prospective of technology and economy. THE CRITICAL ROLE OF AFRICAN PEOPLES in the evolution and operation of Atlantic markets and commerce from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century has been demonstrated in multiple ways in several of the preceding chapters. It has also been shown that the growth of English manufactured exports to Atlantic markets in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries was largely responsible for increments in the sale of industrial products in England during the period and that the consequent expansion in the scale of industrial production provided the main source of pressure and opportunity for sustained technological and organizational development in manufacturing. This chapter continues the analysis by focusing on the specific mechanisms and channels through which access to Atlantic markets impacted the industrialization process in England from the midseventeenth to the mid-nineteenth century. To demonstrate the extent to which the process was trade driven – in particular, trade centered in the Atlantic basin – the specifics of the import substitution cum re-export substitution industrialization (ISI plus RSI), mentioned in Chapter 2 are examined in detail, both in industry-wide terms and in terms of the major manufacturing sectors. For purposes of the issues central to the analysis in this study, made clear in the preceding chapters, included among the Atlantic markets to which England's manufacturers had access during the period are Western Africa, the Americas, and the Iberian peninsula (Portugal and Spain). The House of Lords had some of the greatest legal minds in the world. The law lords therein constituted the highest legal authorities in the British Empire. It was not by coincidence, therefore, that Lord Derby, who moved a censure resolution against the government on account of the bombardment of Canton, began the China debate on 24 February 1857 by appealing to their lordships ‘to deal with the question in a purely judicial spirit’. It is fascinating to see their lordships thresh out the legal complexities of the case of the Arrow, and thence what some of them regarded as the origins of the war. That protracted debate may be boiled down to the following major issues: whether the British flag was flying; whether an insult was intended; whether the Arrow was entitled to fly the British flag; the expiry of the Arrow's register; abuses of the colonial ordinance whereby the Arrow's register had been granted; whether the actions of Parkes, Seymour, and Bowring were justified; whether Bowring had acted in the best interest of the nation; the Canton City question; the right to make war; whether it was a just war; whether the debate was motivated by justice and humanity or by party politics; and how important the China trade was.
