In addition, the book contains chapters concerning the principles relating to basketball mechanics, conditioning the team, setting up practices, general fundamentals, passing and catching, shooting fundamentals, rebounding fundamentals, defensive fundamentals, developing an offense, and developing a defense. This article is focused on the integration between KBE (Knowledge Based Engineering) applications for Design Automation (DA) and companies' data repositories managed by PLM (Product Lifecycle Management), and PDM (Product Data Management) systems. In particular, the authors conducted their research proposing a method to retrieve data or documents of pre-existing components from a document repository, before proceeding to design products. As result of that, designers save time spent in design, verifying loops and documents producing, thanks to the reuse of existing components or product. In order to illustrate their approach, the authors developed an application where the KBE system checks the availability of existing components or products before let the designer proceed to design. New produced documents are stored into the data repository for next design activities. The paper is organized as following: first, it starts with the description of some relevant aspects in engineering design: product and process representation, knowledge reuse and sharing, PDM and KBE functionalities; then, the paper continues analyzing the functionalities of KBE and PDM system in order to introduce the issue of the integration; third, it goes on describing the approach followed by the authors; next, it describes the application above mentioned and performed by the authors on these topics; finally, the results of the work are reported. Standard models for the dynamics of infection disease are based on the assumption of homogeneous mixing among individuals. However, individuals are generally aggregated in patches (pieces of woodland, farms, households, villages…) and transmission of infection is much easier within patches than from one patch to the other. We tackle the problem of providing rigorous formal foundations to current software engineering technologies for web services. We focus on two of the most used XML-based languages for web services: WSDL and WS-BPEL. To this aim, first we select an expressive subset of WS-BPEL, with special concern for modeling the interactions among web service instances in a network context, and define its operational semantics. We call ws-calculus the resulting formalism. Then, we put forward a rigorous typing discipline that formalizes the relationship existing between ws-calculus terms and the associated WSDL documents and supports verification of their compliance. We prove that the type system and the operational semantics of ws-calculus are ‘sound' and apply our approach to an example application involving three interacting web services. In this paper we consider the problem of solving a sequence of linear systems with coefficient matrix Aα=I + αA (or Aα=αI + A), where α is a real paramater and A is skew-symmetric matrix. We propose to solve this problem exploiting the structure of the Schur decomposition of the skew-symmetric matrix and computing the Singular Value Decomposition of a bidiagonal matrix of halved size. This paper compares three unsupervised projection methods: Principal Component Analysis (PCA), which is linear, Self-Organizing Map (SOM) and Curvilinear Component Analysis (CCA), which are both nonlinear. Performance comparison of the three methods is made on a set of seismic data recorded on Stromboli that includes three classes of signals: explosion-quakes, landslides, and microtremors. The unsupervised analysis of the signals is able to discover the nature of the seismic events. Scuffing is a degenerative form of adhesive wear caused by local welding between mating surfaces. Classical methods for scuffing prediction indicate the surface temperature rise (flash temperature) due to friction generated heat as the most important index to assess the risk of scuffing. Nowadays numerical analyses constitute a useful tool to provide a good knowledge in mixed lubrication. However, the difficulties of taking into account the many parameters involved in wear, such as mechanical and chemical changes, do not allow us to use them to simulate a wear process or as a practical design tool. Moreover the model used to represent the surface roughness is of great importance since scuffing is associated with asperity interactions. Some roughness models are discussed. Aramaki and co-worker’s roughness model has been chosen and implemented in a numerical code for the assessment of contact temperature and pressure in lubricated rough contacts. In these applications, we show how Knowledge management is involved in all these phases: IT proposes several methodologies and tools to represent and manage knowledge to aid expert who operates in the domains related to product lifecycle. Methodologies such as Triz can be used to assist conceptual design, while KBE systems permit to automate design procedure of numerous products. We present a calculus inspired by Klaim whose main features are: explicit process distribution and node interconnections, remote operations, process mobility and asynchronous communication through distributed tuple spaces. We first introduce a basic language where connections are reliable and immutable; then, we enrich it with two more advanced features for global computing, i.e. failures and dynamically evolving connections. In each setting, we use our formalisms to specify some non-trivial global computing applications and exploit the semantic theory based on an observational equivalence to equationally establish properties of the considered case-studies. The definition of suitable abstractions and models for identifying, understanding and managing Quality of Service (QoS) constraints is a challenging issue of the Service Oriented Computing paradigm. In this paper we introduce a process calculus where QoS attributes are first class objects. We introduce a foundational language for modelling applications over global computers whose interconnection structure can be explicitly manipulated. Together with process distribution, mobility, remote operations and asynchronous communication through distributed data spaces, the language provides constructs for explicitly modelling inter-node connections and for dynamically establishing and removing them. For the proposed language, we define natural notions of extensional observations and study their closure under operational reductions and/or language contexts to obtain barbed congruence and may testing equivalence. We introduce an ambient-based calculus that combines ambient mobility with process mobility, uses group names to collect ambients with homologous features, and exploits co-moves and runtime type checking to implement flexible policies for controlling process activities. Types rely on group names and, to support dynamicity, may depend on group variables. Policies can dynamically change also through installation of co-moves. The compliance with ambient policies can be checked locally to the ambients and requires no global assumptions. We prove that the type assignment system and the operational semantics of the calculus are ‘sound', and define a sound and complete type inference algorithm which, when applied to terms whose type decorations only express the desired policies, computes the minimal type annotations required for their execution. In this paper we test the performance of two unsupervised clustering strategies for the analysis of LANDSAT multispectral images of the Temples of Paestum Area in Italy. The classification goal is to identify environmental factors (soils, vegetation types, water) on the images, exploiting the features of the seven LANDSAT spectral bands. The first strategy is a fast migrating means technique based on a Maximum Likelihood Principle (ISOCLUST algorithm),and the second is the Kohonen Self Organizing Map (SOM) neural network. The advantage of using the SOM algorithm is that both the information on classes and the similarity between the classes are obtained (since proximity corresponds to similarity among neurons). By exploiting the information on class similarity it was possible to automatically colour each cluster identified by the net (assigning a specific colour to each of them) thus facilitating a successive photo-interpretation. In this paper, we present recent work carried on μKlaim, a core calculus that retains most of the features of Klaim: explicit process distribution, remote operations, process mobility and asynchronous communication via distributed tuple spaces. Communication in μKlaim is based on a simple form of pattern matching that enables withdrawal from shared data spaces of matching tuples and binds the matched variables within the continuation process. Pattern matching is orthogonal to the underlying computational paradigm of μKlaim, but affects its expressive power. After presenting the basic pattern matching mechanism, inherited from Klaim, we discuss a number of variants that are easy to implement and test, by means of simple examples, the expressive power of the resulting variants of the language. We present a preliminary study of photometric and astrometric measurements from adaptive optics (AO) observations of the Galactic Bulge. We compare two different observations of the same crowded stellar region in H-band, one detected with the NICMOS camera on HST and one using NACO, the AO system on the VLT at ESO. The AO image field is affected by anisoplanatism, with the natural guide star just outside the 27.6×27.6 field of view. We want to address the question of the AO images photometric and astrometric precision, compared with analogous HST data taken as the truth, even in presence of anisoplanatism. To do so we have divided the NACO image in 9 sections, derived for each section the corresponding PSF using myopic deconvolution, and then applied the StarFinder program to derive photometry and astrometry in each subfield. We compare astrometry, photometry and depth of sensitivity between the data by HST-NICMOS and NACO. We find that the astrometry from NACO images was equivalent to HST within 32 mas rms and the derived photometry with our method was good as well, within 0.18 stellar magnitudes rms. The ultimate goal of understanding the epidemiology of any disease is to use that information in the development of programs aimed to prevent or eradicate the disease in question. The pathogenesis of Type 1 diabetes involves genetic predisposition to the disease, environmental factors and activation of immune mechanisms targeted against pancreatic islet beta cells. Two major genetic susceptibility loci, IDDM1 and IDDM2, account for 60% of Type 1 diabetes. Environmental factors include viral infection, e.g. with Coxsackie B, chemical toxins such as nitrosourea compounds and neonatal nutrition. The disease process consists of selective destruction of the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas, probably by T cells. This can be divided into eight stages, outlined here. Prevention strategies invoke elimination of environmental triggers, enhancement of environmental protective factors and interruption of the immune sequence leading to beta cell destruction. These may be used after diagnosis or preclinically in at-risk individuals: options for identifying such individuals are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

We present SAM, a symbolic model checker for ACTL, the action-based version of CTL. SAM relies on implicit representations of Labeled Transition Systems (LTSs), the semantic domain for ACTL formulae, and uses symbolic manipulation algorithms. SAM has been realized by translating (networks of) LTSs and, possibly recursive, ACTL formulae into BSP (Boolean Symbolic Programming), a programming language aiming at defining computations on boolean functions, and by using the BSP interpreter to carry out computations (i.e. verifications). In the design of programming languages for mobile agents, i.e. processes which can migrate and execute on new hosts, the integration of security mechanisms is a major challenge. The article focuses on the ways in which problems concerning citizenship in Italy are treated in the context of immigration. The first emigration, at the turn of the century, has had an unparalleled impact in Italy. It was interrupted by a series of internal and external political circumstances. As far as the internal ones are concerned, the population policy of fascism and its ideology of ruralization must be mentioned. The increasingly heavy demographic pressure forced migration to the colonies on the basis of the ideology of the great and proletarian nation. As far as external reasons are concerned, serious problems began with the introduction of the quota system in the U.S. and the effective closure of the channel to the States, with the exception of family reunions. The standard image of this great migration is that of a one-way process: a great final departure involving millions of people. As a matter of fact, although millions have settled permanently across the Atlantic, the large number of temporary and permanent returns that took place in this migratory wave was also quite impressive.

We study may and must testing-based preorders in an asynchronous setting. In particular, we provide some full abstraction theorems that offer alternative characterizations of these preorders in terms of context closure w.r.t. basic observables and in terms of traces and acceptance sets. The article focuses on the uses of mathematical models in the analysis of HIV-1 and AIDS epidemic among drug injectors. The article stresses two aims of mathematical modelling. The first is to identify and to quantify the importance of the main routes through which the spread of HIV-1 infections are likely to have occurred and to occur in the near future; the second aim is to perform "thought experiments" on possible or conceivable control programmes. The article develops a conceptual tool, aimed to improve the understanding of the transmission dynamics of HIV-1 in populations where drug injectors represent a significant reservoir of infection. Using this tool, and an estimate of the Lazio prevalence scenario at the beginning of 1991, the article estimates the amount of infections acquired in the first years of this decade by IDUs and NDIHs, with respect to sex and transmission route. It then predicts the epidemic trends up to the year 2000, and performs a "thought experiment," in a field where a real experiment would have been simply impossible, obtaining results which strongly suggest priorities for prevention programmes.
