Abstract

Summary: Among the strategies for reducing the negative effects on the environment effected by the uncontrolled consumption and low potential for the recovery of conventional plastics, the synthesis of new biodegradable and recyclable plastics represents one of the most promising methods for minimizing the negative effects of conventional non-biodegradable plastics. The spectrum of existing biodegradable materials is still very narrow; thus, to achieve greater applicability, research is being carried out on biodegradable polymer mixtures, the synthesis of new polymers, and the incorporation of new stabilizers for thermal degradation, alongside the use of other additives such as antibacterials or new and more sustainable plasticizers. Some studies analyze direct applications, such as shape memory foams, new cartilage implants, drug release, etc.The reader can find several studies on the degradation of biodegradable polymers under composting conditions; however, novel bacteria that degrade polymers considered non-biodegradable in other, unusual conditions (such as conditions of high salinity) are also presented.

4. Nicotiana tabacum : PEG-Mediated Plastid Transformation.

Abstract

Stable plastid transformation in Nicotiana tabacum has been achieved by using two different methods, the biolistic method, using a particle gun, and the polyethylene glycol (PEG)-mediated transformation. PEG-mediated plastid transformation involves the treatment of isolated protoplasts (plant cells without cell wall) with PEG in the presence of DNA. We have previously shown that in Nicotiana tabacum both methods are equally efficient. The PEG-mediated transformation efficiencies range between 20 and 50 plastid transformants per experiment (106 viable treated protoplasts). One advantage of the PEG method is that no expensive equipment such as a particle gun is required. The only crucial points are the handling and the cultivation of protoplasts. Furthermore, markers for the selection of transformed chloroplasts are required. One of the most often used selection markers is the aadA gene which encodes for spectinomycin and streptomycin resistance. Here we describe a simplified and inexpensive protocol for the transformation of chloroplasts in Nicotiana tabacum using an optimized protoplast culture protocol. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

5. Study on Biodegradation Process of Polyethylene Glycol with Exponential Glowth of Microbial Population.

Abstract

Biodegradation of polyethylene glycol is studied mathematically. A mathematical model for depolymerization process of exogenous type is described. When a degradation rate is a product of a time factor and a molecular factor, a time dependent model can be transformed into a time independent model, and techniques developed in previous studies can be applied to the time independent model to determine the molecular factor. The time factor can be determined assuming the exponential growth of the microbial population. Those techniques are described, and numerical results are presented. A comparison between a numerical result and an experimental result shows that the mathematical method is appropriate for practical applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An encyclopedia entry for polyethylene glycol is presented. It refers to a water-soluble polymer that can be covalently attached to certain molecules, such as filgrastim. The addition of polyethylene glycol does not change the identity, purity or biological activities of filgrastim, however plasma clearance is decreased and the circulating half-life of filgrastim is increased.
