Abstract

Silicon-organic hybrid (SOH) electro-optic modulators combining silicon photonic structures with organic EO materials are investigated. This book addresses aspects that are specifically relevant for the use of SOH modulators in practical high-speed optical communication systems such as packaging, modelling of the device, and the implementation of efficient intensity-modulation/direct-detection (IM/DD) modulation formats.

Abstract

Summary: Semiconductor lasers are carriers of both energy for industry and information for optical communications. The recent progress in research on semiconductor lasers has offered new perspectives regarding both their material growth and structural design. Most of the papers are review papers that briefly overview different types of semiconductors. Some of the papers include the newest research results. We all hope that this Special Issue can shed light on recent advances in the field of semiconductor lasers and their applications so that most of the readers' concerns about semiconductor lasers can be addressed and a conversation can be initiated.

Abstract

After the introduction of dynamic bandwidth allocation(DBA) based on status report(SR) in BPON (Broadband Passive Optical Network based on ATM), a scheme of DBA called predictive DBA based on non Status Report(NSR) is given, which allocates the bandwidth by monitoring upstream idle cell. Finally, emulation results are given by using OPNET to modeling, the results show that by using predictive DBA based on NSR, low cell delay and cell delay variation and high utilization can be achieved in BPON.
