Chapter 6 of the book "Guide to Nursing Leadership and Management: Theories, Processes and Practice" is presented. It explores nursing regulation through nursing practice in the U.S. Aside from protecting the public through a defined nursing practice, nursing regulation is also aimed at regulating nursing education and overseeing the competence of nurses through licensing and disciplinary rules and regulations. A definition of nursing competency is presented, which refers to the skill and behavior required to perform the role of a nurse.
