Abstract

In this paper, a preliminary result from the latest hypernuclear ν-ray spectroscopy experiment (KEK-E566) is presented together with a short discussion. The experiment was performed at the KEK-PS K6 beam line in 2005. In this experiment, the 12C(Π+,K+) Λ12 C reaction was employed to populate Λ12 C/ Λ11B hypernuclei. A germanium detector array, Hyperball2, was constructed to detect ν-rays emitted from the hypernuclei produced. Three hypernuclear ν-ray peaks were observed and assigned. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The next generation hypernuclear ν-ray spectrometer, Hyperball-J, is described. Three of the key aspects in the array construction, namely geometrical configurations, cooling mechanism of Ge detectors, and Compton suppressors, are discussed. Results of simulation for planar and spherical arrangements are compared. Progresses in the development of pulse tube cooling system and PWO background suppression counters are reported. Abstract

We searched for the H-dibaryon resonance in the ΛΛ invariant mass spectrum obtained by 12C(K−, K+ΛΛX) reactions using a scintillating fiber active target. We observed enhanced ΛΛ production near the threshold, as found in a previous KEK experiment, with improved statistics. Data were compared with the results of a cascade model calculation including ΛΛ final state interactions consistent with the recently measured binding energy of the double-Λ hypernucleus. No significant enhancements above the levels predicted by the model were observed. The upper limit for the production cross section of the H-dibaryon with a mass range between the ΛΛ and ΞN threshold is found to be 2.1 μb/sr at a 90% confidence level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We present our plan to measure X rays from Ξ− atoms for the first time in the world at J-PARC. The measurement of X rays from Ξ− atoms is a promising method to study the optical potential between Ξ− and a nucleus as proved in the cases of other negative hadrons (Π−, K−, ]> , and Σ−). While we are intending to measure X rays from as many targets as possible over the periodic table, we have chosen Fe (iron) as the first target because the measurement will be the easiest and because large X-ray energy shift and width may be expected. Choice of other targets will be determined based on the result of the first experiment. We can accumulate several thousand counts of X rays and determine its energy shift down to ∼0.05 keV. This is sensitive enough to observe expected energy shift (∼1 keV) with reasonable accuracy, while sensitivities for X-ray width is somewhat weaker (measurable down to ∼1 keV). Abstract

A search for the Θ+ pentaquark in the K+p → Π+X reaction was performed utilizing a high-resolution spectrometer at the K6 beam line of the KEK 12GeV Proton Synchrotron. Incident K+ beams of 1.2 GeV/c were irradiated to a liquid hydrogen target. No significant evidence of the Θ+ was found. The upper limit of the differential cross section averaged over 2° to 20° in the laboratory frame for the K+p → Π+Θ+ reaction was obtained to be 1.9 μb/sr at 90 % confidence level. From the present result, the t-channel process is excluded or the coupling constant gK*NΘ is quite small. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
