This volume collects works by Hispanists from different origins: from researchers whose mother tongue is Spanish and who carry out their work in the Hispanic world, whether peninsular or American, to those who work in regions where Spanish is a minority language and/or or who have acquired Spanish as a second language. This joyous diversity finds its expression in the works that make up this volume, highlighting one of the central objectives of the AIH: the academic and plural dialogue between the Hispanicisms of the world, an enriching and vivifying dialogue that knows no borders. Doing so for the first time outside of Europe and America takes on a very special significance, by inserting this multiplicity of perspectives into the present and much-needed dialogue between our peoples and regions. The printed book exclusively includes the opening speeches and plenary presentations, which were given by Myrna Solotorevsky, Patrizia Botta, Angela Schrott, Juan Diego Vila, Manuel Rivero Rodríguez and James Valender. This work is a contribution to the understanding of some diachronic and synchronic aspects of the grammatical relation Indirect Object hitherto not studied: (i) grammaticalization (from the 12th to the 21st century) of cross reference –double representation– of indirect object in the light of the theory of 'drift' of Henning Andersen; (ii) revision of the conceptualization of grammatical relations within functional linguistics, on one hand of Simon Dik, on the other of Michael Herslund. The study is based on a corpus of texts (2 mill. running words) of Peninsular and American Spanish, dating from the end of the 19th to the beginnings of the 21st century. All kinds of genres – written as well as spoken – have been studied.

In this book the author reflects on the role of the reading of literature in the cultural processes of identity formation. The book forms an argument for the contention that the aesthetic approach to literary texts is not in opposition to a culture-analytical orientation but actually constitutes a prerequisite for it. Moreover, the development of the general semiotic theory proposes a strengthening of interdisciplinary work as regards i.e. visual impressions, linguistic problems and historical issues. The target group of the book comprises teachers and students of foreign language studies at the advanced education centres.

Madvig (1804-1886) has occupied a special position in Danish educational tradition since he in the 1830s formulated an independent suggestion for a cultural education, which proved extremely influential in the development of the learned school in the second half of the 19th century. Jesper Eckhardt Larsen has an MA in History from the University of Copenhagen.

During the mid-20th century, old South Greenlanders still spoke their genuine dialects when Mâliâraq Vebæk, herself a South Greenlander, born 1917, collected on tape stories and descriptions of pre-modern daily life from 42 informants. In this volume, the texts appear in dialectal transcription and translated into English, as well as in sound on the inserted CD-Rom, containing the tape recordings. Among the South Greenlandic dialects, the southernmost from the Cape Farewell region, which is now extinct, attracts particular interest, because this area received emigrants from the gradually depopulated southeast coast during the 19th century. The so-called qavak-dialect of the Cape Farewell region thus became an interesting mixture of the southeast and southwest Greenlandic dialects. This publication is targetted at linguists and is the first and only presentation of the South Greenlandic dialects. A phonological introduction is offered for the benefit of the linguists, but any reader of English (or the dialects) interested in stories, Greenland etc. can fully enjoy the texts.

This book is intended as counter-evidence to the perception that Linguistics is a domain of dusty schoolroom grammar. It follows that linguistics can be characterised differently than as proponents of theoretical orientations who spend their brief breaks from their bone-dry work bashing each other over the head with their various favourite abstractions. The discipline may appear to outsiders as fragmented and - worse still - lacking in relevance to the real world outside its gates. This book demonstrates that Linguistics, in all its varied branches, can be entertaining as well as thought-provoking, and that its domain is indeed a coherent one despite all the internecine squabbling. In an unconventional way, Michael Fortescue introduces his subject as a kind of fable with a historical moral that professional linguists, as well as students, should enjoy as a useful commentary on the state of the discipline today. is a professor of Linguistics at the University of Copenhagen.
