In the field of education, the quick progression of technologies poses both unprecedented challenges and unparalleled opportunities. As our classrooms undergo a large shift, traditional practices are being questioned, demanding a reevaluation of how we teach, learn, and prepare the leaders of tomorrow. The consensus is clear: for our students to thrive in an increasingly tech-driven world, they must not only understand but also master technology to ensure future economic success. However, the integration of these technologies into education brings forth a myriad of complexities, necessitating a thoughtful exploration of their impact and potential solutions. The swift development of transformational technologies is reshaping education, presenting educators, administrators, and policymakers with a daunting challenge. "Augmented Reality and the Future of Education Technology" offers pivotal solutions to the challenges presented by transformative technologies in education. Traditional teaching methods are being scrutinized, and the need for a cohesive understanding of these technologies is becoming imperative. The growing gap between the demands of the digital age and the current state of education highlights the urgency to address issues such as teacher readiness, student engagement, and the overall organizational culture's ability to adapt to this technological paradigm shift. The question remains: How can education effectively harness these technologies to create learner-centric, personalized, and engaging learning experiences?

Globalization has become one of the most recurrent concepts in social and political sciences. More often than not, however, the concept is handled without much of a properly articulated theory capable of explaining its historical origin and expansion. For education researchers attempting to elucidate how global changes and processes affect their field of study, this situation is problematic. "The Oxford Handbook on Education and Globalization" brings together in a unique way leading authors in social theory and in political science and reflects on how these two distinct disciplinary approaches deal with the relation between globalization and education. Part I develops a firmer and tighter dialogue between social theory, long concerned with theories of globalization, and education research. It presents, discusses, and compares three major attempts to theorize the process of globalization and its relation to education: the neo-institutionalist theorization of world culture, the materialist and domination perspectives, and Luhmann's theory of world society. Part II analyses the political and institutional factors that shape the adoption of global reforms at the national and local level of governance, emphasizing the role of different contexts in shaping policy outcomes. It engages with the existing debates of globalization mainly in the field of public policy and comparative politics and explores the social, political, and economic implications of globalization for national systems of education, their organizations, and institutions.

This open access book offers a unique and refreshing view on working with social theory in higher education. Using engaging first-person accounts coupled with critical intellectual analysis, the authors demonstrate how theory is grappled with as part of an ongoing practice rather than a momentary disembodied encounter. In a structure that creates a space for relational dialogue, each chapter is followed by a response from another author, demonstrating the varied interpretive possibilities of social theory. Collectively the authors invite the reader to engage with them in questioning the usefulness of social theory in higher education teaching and research, in considering its possibilities and limits, and in experiencing the opportunity it offers to understand ourselves and our work differently. Written in a way that is scholarly yet accessible, the contributors explore how social theories can be used to think through issues that are emerging as key social and political concerns in higher education and beyond. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted education provision at an unprecedented scale, with education systems around the world being impacted by extended school closures and abrupt changes to normal school operations. The Responses to Educational Disruption Survey (REDS) investigated how teaching and learning were affected by the health crisis, and how education stakeholders responded to the educational disruption across and within countries. The study aimed to provide a systemic, multi-perspective, and comparative picture of the situation at the secondary education level (grade eight) in 11 countries spanning Africa, Asia, Arab region, Europe, and Latin America. While many other efforts exist that collect and provide similar information, they are mostly derived from non-representative rapid surveys and lack internationally comparable information from schools, collected in a systematic and scientific manner. The REDS International Report presents unique data, collected from countries, schools, teachers, and students for the first time, in chapters that cover several themes on which data were collected which include student and teacher well-being, students' academic progress during the school closures, and the measures countries have implemented to keep all children learning. Initial findings provide evidence for better orienting and tailoring policy responses to crisis and provide invaluable information on what may be required to accelerate education, recover from crisis, and to strengthen the resilience of education systems in the future. Gender inequality has wide-ranging and adverse implications for all of society. For this reason, the United Nations has made it a top priority to address this issue through the Sustainable Development Goals, which state that gender equality is not only a fundamental human right but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable world. "Gender Inequality and its Implications on Education and Health" explains the different implications of gender inequality and finds solutions to our most pressing issues. The authors of these collected studies show that though in various contexts around the globe, girls and women are discouraged and prevented from receiving quality education, proper health care, women empowerment and social justice, if this exclusion is eliminated it produces many additional socio-economic gains that benefit entire societies. Focusing largely on India to explore firstly the implications of gender inequality on education and health and then gender inequality and its implications to other SDGs, the chapters extend globally to analyse countries from Asia, Australia, Africa, and Europe. Raising awareness among stakeholders and institutions to recognise the importance of gender inequality throughout the world and its various implications -- especially on education and health -- "Gender Inequality and its Implications on Education and Health" provides strategies to achieve gender equality.

This edited volume offers new analytical and methodological approaches to the study of education in the post-pandemic educational context, through case studies from countries in South Asia such as Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. "Skill is laying the foundation for a brighter India. As John Ruskin puts it, "Skill is the unified force of experience, intellect, and passion in their operation." "Nation Building" is a herculean task that involves the government of the land, private and public institutions, industries, organisations, and every citizen there, holding accountability of its development inch by inch. India faces enormous problems in practically every aspect of national life as a young democratic nation with a multilingual, multicultural, and multiethnic population. Poverty, illiteracy, unequal and underdeveloped growth of diverse segments of the country, and insufficient infrastructure in educational and training institutions are all impeding the country's development. The insufficiently skilled workforce is unable to assume greater responsibilities in the development of a better nation. In India, there is now a scarcity of highly trained and skilled educators. Both in India and overseas, there is a considerable need for all levels of skilled labour, including semiskilled, skilled, highly skilled, and highly skilled with specialisation. An estimated 65 percent of workers in India are aged 15 to 59, with an average age of 29 compared to China and other OECD countries. Approximately 335 million people are currently employed in the United States today. They are largely uneducated and have little or no experience. Approximately 59 million of the 70 million predicted to enter the market will be in the 15 to 30 age category. For the development of our country, reskilling, up-skilling, and conceiving and generating ways and means for national and international labour mobility, as well as mitigating the low contribution of women labour force, are all critical. Our youth will be more competent if we place a higher value on skill development. To address all of the concerns of globalisation, knowledge explosion and distribution, and skill development competition, the Indian government has launched a number of initiatives, including Skill India, Digital India, Startup India, and Make in India. Many groups are attempting to improve people's skills. Taiwan and more than 20 other countries/political entities in the Indo-Pacific Region are located between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. Regardless of economic development or strategic geography, they all play a pivotal role in the global deployment. How they develop talents by means of technical and vocational education (TVE) has drawn Taiwan's attention. Aiming to achieve the following three goals, this book is compiled and published: (1) to strengthen the mutual understanding and connection of TVE between Taiwan and the other countries in the Indo-Pacific region, (2) to expand more cross-country educational cooperation and flow of talent, and (3) to take advantage of the core competencies and achievements of TVE in neighboring countries as a Taiwan innovation reference for change. Two editors-in-chief formulated manuscript guidelines including cross-country comparison components, invited technical and vocational educators from 10 countries in the Indo-Pacific Region to follow the guidelines to write up country-specific chapters, conducted a peer review of all manuscripts and requested authors to make necessary revisions, and made a cross-country comparison which is presented as the 11th chapter. This book compiles country-specific articles about TVE profiles, the status of TVE, and trends and issues in TVE from 10 countries, namely Australia, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, the United States, and Viet Nam. This book examines access, lifelong learning and education for all, which have been policy preoccupations in all countries for more than half a century, but have been overlaid and pushed aside by the development of mass higher education. The authors examine what has been achieved, what lessons have been learnt and what still remains to be done, addressing matters of equity, agency, community, mobility and hierarchy.

Since the turn of the millennium it has become clear that the Asia-Pacific Region is, economically, the fastest growing continent in the world, and is likely to remain so for some time despite the setbacks of the COVID-19 pandemic. Asia-Pacific's share of the world's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) doubled from 15 per cent to 30 per cent between 1970 and 2017 and is projected to account for half of global GDP by 2050. With South East and South Asia also growing rapidly, with over half the world's population and three of the world's five largest economies, Asia is soon poised to home half of the world's middle class - a class that is both the driver and the product of higher education. The quality of a country's system of higher education may be seen both as a gauge of its current level of national development as well as of its future economic prospects. It is therefore natural that the putative "Asian Century" should generate interest in the region's higher education systems which, on the one hand, share common characteristics-a fixation with credentials and engineering, high technology (especially among male students), and business degrees-while at the same time are also highly differentiated, not only across countries but also within. As such, a better understanding of higher education achievements, failings, potential, and structural limitations in the Asia-Pacific Region is imperative. This handbook presents a number of significant country case-studies and documents cross-cutting trends relating to, among other things: the trilemma faced by governments juggling competing claims of access, accessible cost, and quality; the balance between teaching and research; the links between labour markets (demand) and higher education (supply); preferred fields of study and their consequences; the rise of the research university in Asia; the lure of institutions of international reputation within the region; new education technologies and their effects; and, trends in government policy within the wider region and sub-regions.

The collection of chapters in this special book examines educational practices during the COVID-19 viral outbreak. This special book brings together a variety of studies and scholars in an effort to exemplify how the COVID-19 shapes the learning and teaching processes in different countries. The twelve chapters selected for this special book present diverse vantage points on the circumstances that influence students, teachers, parents, and schools. The focus of this book is on education, but in the context of broader global effects. Education processes, practices, and outcomes in the time of COVID-19 do not occur in a vacuum. Disruptions to the normal processes and practices of education associated with the novel coronavirus are directly tied, among other considerations, to the societal risk of having students congregating in close quarters, the economic problems encountered by their families, difficulties of food availability, and loss of family cohesion due to death, illness, and lack of proximity and diminished support structures due to social distancing. Any return to "normal" education opportunities and the hope for improving (or at least sustaining) positive student outcomes likely will be impossible without a vaccine that is available worldwide at low or no cost, together with effective repair of the global economy, and the ability of students and adults to engage in larger-group activities. Until that situation becomes reality, many children will be unable to learn effectively and will not be equipped to realize their potential. In summary, the twelve chapters cover the topic of educational practices during the COVID-19 viral outbreak. The chapters are authored by scholars from 10 different countries: the United States, Turkey, the United Kingdom, Spain, Bhutan, Indonesia, Morocco, India, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates. The chapters provide readers with a wide range of international perspectives on educational practices during the COVID-19 pandemic. The reported studies involve research findings from students, teachers, parents, and school administrators at different levels of students' education experience.

This e-book is a collection of educational projects completed by the alumni of National Teacher Training Centre (NTTC), Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) and was published by the Alumni Association of NTTC, JIPMER in association with the Dept. of Medical education, JIPMER. The main objective of this publication is to provide an opportunity for the alumni of NTTC to share their experience with significant educational practices and interventions that worked for them in promoting knowledge, attitude and skills among their learners.

Countries that have sustained rapid growth over decades have typically had a strong public commitment to expanding education as well as to improving learning outcomes. South Asian countries have made considerable progress in expanding access to primary and secondary schooling, with countries having achieved near-universal enrollment of the primary-school-age cohort (ages 6-11), except for Afghanistan and Pakistan. Secondary enrollment shows an upward trend as well. Beyond school, many more people have access to skill-improving opportunities and higher education today. Although governments have consistently pursued policies to expand access, a prominent feature of the region has been the role played by non-state actors, private nonprofit and for-profit entities, in expanding access at every level of education. Though learning levels remain low, countries in the region have shown a strong commitment to improving learning. All countries in South Asia have taken the first step, which is to assess learning outcomes regularly. Since 2010, there has been a rapid increase in the number of large-scale student learning assessments conducted in the region. But to use the findings of these assessments to improve schooling, countries must build their capacity to design assessments and analyze and use findings to inform policy.

This edited volume broadens the understanding of the media arts at a global scale bringing together practices and ideas from artists and art educators from around the world. Authors explore issues of cultural and social diversity in fields of education, media theory, and critical theories of education and pedagogy with particular attention to digital technologies' impact on visual arts learning. Researchers utilize a range of methodologies including participant-researcher ethnographies, action research, case study, and design based research. These artists and art educators share new research about the pedagogical and theoretical aspects of media arts in educational systems that are facing unprecedented change. This volume begins to map why and how experts are working within networked society and playing with digital innovations through media arts education as a critical and creative practice.

In 2015, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was elected to govern Delhi promising to improve public services, including education through government schools that would be the equal of private-school provision. Media reports, along with the party's re-election in 2020, suggest strong public confidence that AAP are delivering on that promise. But is this success reflected by experience in schools? "Delhi's Education Revolution" offers a critical evaluation of the AAP's education reforms by exploring policy and practice through the eyes of one key group: the government-school teachers tasked with making the AAP's pledge a reality. Drawing on 110 research interviews conducted via Zoom during the COVID pandemic in the summer of 2020, teachers explain how the reforms have changed their profession and practice, and whether education really has improved for children of all backgrounds. Analysis of views about critical issues such as inclusion and the pressure of achievement targets in classrooms that often contain more than 50 students, informs their observations about the reform programme itself. The study paints a more qualified picture of success than suggested elsewhere and makes a valuable contribution to the understanding of education reforms in India, and most especially, in Delhi.

"The Oxford Encyclopedia of School Reform" is a monumental publication that provides a wide-ranging collection of school reform strategies from several geographical regions around the world. It illustrates both the theory and practical outcomes of reform efforts situated in different cultural contexts. The major theme that runs through the "Encyclopedia" is both the successes and failures of reforms: the detailed analyses offered in the text have a unique potential to guide future reforms. The power of the text is its ability to shift readers out of their culturally myopic perspective, and to seriously engage with alternative ways of conceptualizing and solving educational problems. The "Encyclopedia" is organized geographically, and each section offers multiple perspectives on school reform initiatives as they have been carried out in different countries and regions around the world. It is the most extensive work of its kind and will be essential reading for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers interested in improving learning outcomes for students at all levels.

This collection of short papers is an outcome of the third conference on virtual exchange in higher education hosted by the Pedagogical University in Krakow in April 2018. Following the focus of the conference on virtual exchange in service of social inclusion and global citizenship, the papers collected in this volume offer first-hand insights into theoretical and practical considerations on the most recent stage of this rapidly developing form of learning. The publication will be of particular interest to academic educators, researchers, administrators, and mobility officers planning to implement virtual exchange in their unique academic contexts.

By its very nature ethnography is an emergent methodology. To be ethical the ethnographer needs to manage research ethics in-situ. This need to manage ethical dilemmas as they arise often comes into conflict with increased ethical regulation and procedures from ethics review boards that require the researcher to foresee ethical quandaries before data collection commences. These regulations can constrain the emerging purpose of the study, evolving means of data collection and multifaceted ways of interacting with participants that are seen as being the strengths of undertaking an ethnographic approach. The chapters in this volume problematise this tension and highlight the importance of managing ethics in-situ by reflecting on recently completed and current projects drawing out ethical dilemmas relating to data ownership, dissemination, representation, social justice and managing ethnographic studies in the midst of a global pandemic and COVID-19 lockdowns. Reflecting on these experiences of doing educational ethnography with children and young people, drawing on a diverse range of studies conducted in England, Scotland, South America, India, and the Basque Country, this volume argues that administrative and conceptual change is needed to ensure that ethics does not become a tick box exercise but that ethnographers commit fully to conscientiously managing ethics in-situ.

This book addresses what is, perhaps, the single most important issue for vocational education; its relatively low standing in an era of high aspiration. The work explores the nature, extent and consequences for an educational sector that whilst having an increasingly important role in contemporary societies is seen to be of low standing across both countries with developed and developing economies. Some of the standing is associated with the occupation it serves and this is highlighted in an era of high aspiration by young people and their parents. The consequences are far-reaching. This includes how governments and community view and support vocational education, parents and familiars advise about participation in it and young people's decision-making associated with their post-school pathways. More than describing this problem, the focus of this collection is how this issue can be redressed through the actions of supra-government agencies, governments, schools in tertiary education institutions, industry and professional bodies and employers. It sets out the quality and extent of societal sentiments in shaping how vocational education and the occupation it serves are projected, across countries, continents and cultures, and offers a range of perspectives and contributions from scholars on how this issue might be redressed. These contributions are drawn together and synthesised into sets of propositions, practices and approaches directed towards governments, schooling and tertiary education institutions, educators, researchers, industry and professional bodies and employers. This book responds to growing recognition by international education professionals, policy makers, and funding partners of the need for qualified teachers and interest in the subject of teacher professional development (also referred to as "teacher behavior change"). The book responds to important questions that are fundamental to improving teaching quality by influencing teaching practice. Democracy and higher education are inextricably linked: universities not only have the ability to be key arbiters of how democracy is advanced, but they also need to reflect democratic values in their practices, objectives, and goals. Framed by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the ongoing crisis of structural racism, "Higher Education for Democracy" explores academe's role in advancing democracy by using a cross-national comparison of Los Angeles, New Delhi, and Hong Kong to develop strategies that universities can employ to strengthen democracy and resist fascism. William G. Tierney argues that if academe is to be a progenitor in the advancement of democracy, then we need to consider five areas of change that have been significant across national contexts amid both globalization and neoliberalism: inequality, privatization, the public good, identity, and academic freedom. Taking a comparative approach and drawing on scholarly literature, archival research, and interviews, "Higher Education for Democracy" aims to understand these changes and their implications and to position higher education in defense of democracy in a globalized economy framed by fascism.

School choice reforms are increasingly common across the U.S. This symposium summarizes and presents the most recent research on the social effects of private school choice programs and public charter schools. All three papers consider heterogeneity in effects that can and should inform policymaking. The first paper, "Charter School Entry and School Choice: The Case of Washington, D.C." (Maria Marta Ferreyra and Grigory Kosenok) discusses novel research on estimating an equilibrium model of charter school entry and school choice. From a social standpoint, the paper shows that the existence of charter schools yields net benefits. The second paper, "Squeezing the Public School Districts: The Fiscal Effects of Eliminating the Louisiana Scholarship Program" (Corey A. DeAngelis and Julie R. Trivitt) studies the fiscal effects of reduced funding in a statewide voucher program. This paper adds to the literature by comparing the short-term and long-term savings to the state and individual public school districts due to this policy. The results show that the voucher program generates net cost savings in the long run for almost all educational jurisdictions under reasonable assumptions. The third paper, "The Juice Is Worth the Squeeze: A Benefit/Cost Analysis of the Experimental Evidence on Private School Vouchers across the Globe" (M. Danish Shakeel, Kaitlin P. Anderson, and Patrick J. Wolf) is a benefit/cost analysis of the best available research on private school vouchers. This benefit/cost analysis provides the most comprehensive look at the achievement effects of school voucher programs using lottery-based research designs both in the U.S. and internationally. In the midst of unprecedented attention to gender based violence (GBV), prompted in part by the #MeToo movement, "Collaborating for Change: Transforming Cultures to End Gender-Based Violence in Higher Education" provides a groundbreaking analysis of higher education culture and how it can be transformed to eradicate GBV. With increasing global challenges, the Belt and Road initiative seems to offer one possible platform to think about different possibilities and pathways to promote international collaboration and development covering Asia, Europe, Africa, and other countries. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education, as a key focus, provides valuable perspectives for governments, inter-governmental and non-governmental agencies wanting to innovate and advance both ICT and education independently and collaboratively. This book highlights the burgeoning of ICT in education in eleven countries, with particular emphasis placed on the context of the Belt and Road Initiative. At any one time, about 300 million children of school going age are not in school. Experience indicates that when schooling is disrupted, whether by a pandemic, a natural disaster or other reasons, not all children return to the classroom. In addition, most countries have growing numbers of young people who have not completed schooling, or not well enough to progress, and who find themselves neither in employment nor in further education and training. Open schooling can create learning opportunities for those not in school, those who left school and those who are in school but not learning effectively. There is no single model for open schooling provision which might offer a complementary or alternative curriculum, or both. However, all models can benefit from greater use of open educational resources; open, distance and flexible methods and open educational practices. In this way it is possible to address issues of access, quality and affordability in a sustainable way. "Addressing the Learning Needs of Out-of-School Children and Youths through the Expansion of Open Schooling" makes a case for open schooling to be an integral part of future-looking education systems that will be more resilient to changing contexts and needs. The nine chapters in Part A of the book explore the need for and nature of open schooling as well as cross-cutting issues related to curriculum, open educational resources, technology enabled learning, monitoring and evaluation, finance, open and distance learning methods and open educational practices, as well as gender and policy. The first four chapters in Part B then explore open schooling practice in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and the Pacific. In the final chapter, the editors summarise the key issues which policy and practice need to address. This book offers guidelines and examples that will be of use to teachers, managers, policy-makers and education leaders interested to ensure that the education system meets the needs of all children and youths.

In their pledge to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, countries across the globe have turned their attention to improving quality education, which includes student learning assessments. For many countries, implementing learning assessments is crucial to monitoring educational outcomes by providing data for education policies and reviewing the teaching and learning process. Many countries in the Asia-Pacific region have invested significant time and energy to monitor students' learning outcomes and enhance school performances. To support these efforts in Asia and the Pacific, UNESCO Bangkok and the Network on Education Quality Monitoring in the Asia-Pacific (NEQMAP) surveyed the region's countries to map national policies and practices of learning assessments. The analysis is based on responses from 24 countries on their assessment policies and practices from 2005 to 2015 and highlights several important insights for countries to strengthen their national assessment systems, from capacity building and improved coordination to better dissemination and utilization of results. Building on four years of stocktaking and the 2018 Guidelines on Developing Qualifications Frameworks these Guidelines capture an important way forward to accelerate implementation of qualifications frameworks and quality assurance at subject level. The new Guidelines aim to provide a reference document for Member States to operationalize their national qualifications frameworks at subject and programme levels in order to have a well-developed and well-functioning qualifications system. The overarching purpose and the desired outcomes of the Guidelines are: (1) define and link quality assurance with qualifications frameworks for operationalizing quality tools at subject level in the Asia-Pacific region; (2) determine the dimensions and principles of quality assurance based on the lessons learned in two subject fields -- educational studies and cultural heritage management; (3) highlight the challenges and potentials in implementing quality standards or achievement standards at subject level; and (4) envision the way forward in implementing quality assurance arrangements at subject level as a shared responsibility within and between internal and external stakeholders to promote recognition, employability and mobility in the Asia- Pacific region. Overall, the Guidelines incorporate the principles of continuous mutually reinforcing processes (both top-down and bottom-up) and multiple ownership of quality assurance (QA) processes. The document advocates for a Chief Learning Scientist/Architect, highlights the importance of outcomes-based programme development and planning, and emphasizes the value of continuous professional development of teaching personnel, as well as building a culture of quality among faculties. Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields are considered catalysts for the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Yet, particularly for STEM fields, girls and women, for a multitude of social, cultural and psychological reasons, engage and participate at a lower rate than boys and men. This research collection aims to highlight the contextual barriers that girls and women face in STEM education and careers and offer concrete examples of interventions that successfully encourage participation of girls and women in STEM. The case stories presented in this publication focus on young people from vulnerable communities that the Asia South Pacific Association for Basic and Adult Education (ASPBAE) members are actively engaged with and who have been mobilized in ASPBAE programs for youth leadership and capacity development. The case studies presented are a showcase of the innovative programs utilized by youth organisations. This volume brings together the work of a wide range of scholars to explore the long and complex history of the relationships between churches and education. Christianity has always been involved in education, from the very earliest teaching of those about to be baptised, to present-day churches' involvement in schools and higher education. Christianity has a core theological concern for teaching, discipleship and formation, but the dissemination of Christian ideas and positions has not necessarily been an explicitly didactic process. Educational projects have served not only to support but also to question and even reconfigure particular versions of the Christian message, and the recipients of education have also both received and subverted the teaching offered. Under the editorship of Morwenna Ludlow, this volume explores the ways in which churches have sought to educate, catechise and instruct the clergy and laity, adults and children, men and women, boys and girls. "Education and the Public Sphere" conceptually and empirically investigates and unfolds several complexities embedded in the educational system in India by exploring it as a site of transforming the public sphere. This book highlights some of Kenneth King's diverse contributions to international and comparative education, African studies and development studies over more than four decades. From his pioneering work on the first educational commissions to Africa, through his research on skills training in the informal sector, and on to his critical analysis of education analysis in development agencies, this book makes influential materials available in one place. Appropriately, it illustrates his career-long connections with Kenya, but also his more recent engagement with Japan, China and India. It is the first CERC [Comparative Education Research Centre] volume to pay significant attention to the policies and politics of skills development. Kenneth King is an Emeritus Professor of the University of Edinburgh. He was based in and directed its Centre of African Studies for many years, and lectured on international perspectives in education and training in its School of Education. His research interests have addressed the politics and planning of skills development, including in the informal sector of the economy, aid policies towards education of both Western and Asian donors, and higher education cooperation. He founded NORRAG, the network for international policies and cooperation in education and training, in 1986, and edited NORRAG News until 2016. He was President of the British Association for International and Comparative Education (BAICE) from 2014-2016, and was one of the founding members of the UK Forum on International Education and Training (UKFIET).
