The book deals with the situation of humanities scholars in the labour market. The starting point of the seven empirical contributions is the discrimination of humanities scholars in comparison to other university graduates. This is reflected in an above-average unemployment rate, a significantly higher prevalence of precarious employments and often a comparatively low income. The aim of the book is to determine current options and future opportunities for this occupational group on the basis of a broad empirical survey of the humanities.

The volume is dedicated to the professional future prospects of graduates of disciplines in the humanities. This group of academics occupies a special position with regard to the rather diffuse professional fields that humanities scholars expect after receiving their degree. Career prospects are less concrete and, in comparison with university graduates from other disciplines, are more subject to fluctuations in demand from the labour market. "All-rounders" or "generalists" are sought, whose competence portfolios must flexibly meet the requirements of future employers.
