34. Communication Support Visual Interface for Collaborative Learning.

Abstract

In computer-supported collaborative learning, learners focus on particular learners/utterances in discussing exercises. However, as the communication band of information networks is restricted, learners cannot acquire much information about the situations or the behaviors of other learners in the learning environment. In this paper, we describe an interactive interface where learners are aware of the conversation flow and visually acquire information. In our interface, utterance texts are moved toward the learner view from the transition information of utterances. Focusing utterances of the learner are detected based on the target learner of utterances and stressed in the represented in the interface. Experimental results showed that participants could intuitively grasp the conversation flow by observing the moving utterances. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

35. Topic Visualization for Understanding Research Paper in Collaborative Discussion.

Abstract

Our objective is to construct a collaborative discussion support system for understanding the research paper in the research group by visualizing the contents of the discussion. When reading a research paper, it is essential not only to understand the contents of the paper but also to obtain the related knowledge. Our system evaluates topics in discussion from the viewpoints of similarity between a topic and the paper and that between topics. Then, the system visualizes topics as circles around chapter nodes whose distances from their target chapter nodes and other topic nodes represent the similarities. Abstract

In Web-based collaborative learning, it is hard for learners to exchange opinions because communication means are too limited. Therefore, learners cannot be immersed in the learning environment. In order for learners to collaborate with others effectively, they need be able to acquire information on the situation, the behavior of others, etc. and feel the atmosphere of the learning environment by grasping the intentions of others. In this paper, we propose an immersive round-table interface in which learners' intentions for focusing on others are reflected by automatically changing camera images of other learners based on the focus degree. Based on the experimental results, the concept of the round-table interface clearly helps learners concentrate on the learning environment and communicate with others naturally.
