Abstract

Managed care organizations' electronic claims files, automated medical records, organizational capabilities, and access to both clinicians and members have provided a great deal of otherwise unobtainable information about the use, efficacy, effectiveness cost-effectiveness, and adverse reaction profile of marketed therapeutic agents. The first system is used by the organizations that comprise the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality-sponsored HMO Research Network Center for Education and Research in Therapeutics. The second is used by the health maintenance organizations (HMOs). Each HMO has pharmacy dispensing records, automated inpatient and outpatient claims data, plus enrolment files containing demographic data and information on dates of eligibility for various kinds of care, including pharmacy benefit status.
