Pharmacology neuroimaging studies suggest that certain class of drugs, such as cholinergics and GABAergics have specific, receptor-mediated actions on arousal and cognition. In human studies, cholinergics and GABAergics altered arousal and cognition by affecting sensory and association cortical areas. In animals, high-resolution studies showed that cholinergic and GABAergic agents seem to affect the subcortical nuclei and reticular formation in the midbrain and thalamus.
