Supporting teacher learning is a complicated and challenging task. The structure of humanness as the unique and essential being of the individual, constantly emerging through experience and the actualization of human potential within the sports environment, is the central theme of this book. Sport is defined broadly to include all forms of physical activity experiences. Each chapter represents an inquiry unique to its author's views, yet all are supportive of a perspective that places primary importance on the humanness of the individual in the sports environment--being human, increasing levels of consciousness, being one's body, and being one's self. In the 1960s and 1970s, positron emission tomography (PET) was developed as a research tool, particularly for the investigation of neurophysiology.1-4 In the 1980s and 1990s, the clinical utility of PET in oncology, neurology, and cardiology was demonstrated.5-10 The approval of reimbursement by the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services for oncologic PET and the subsequent establishment of regional distribution centers of fluorine-18 (18F)-fluoro-2-deoxy-glucose (FDG) in the late 1990s contributed greatly to the expansion in the clinical use of PET. This expansion led to greater availability of PET for pediatric imaging as well as for adults.11,12 Pediatric PET has demonstrated utility in neurology as well as oncology, and the application of PET in pediatrics will continue to grow as its clinical potential is further realized and as new positron-emitting radiopharmaceuticals are developed. Several technologic factors, involving both physics and radiopharmaceutical chemistry, have contributed to the popularity of PET. It is substantially easier to develop a PET rather than a single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) analogue to many naturally occurring, biologically relevant chemicals such as water, oxygen, carbon monoxide, ammonia, glucose, and a whole host of others. Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) allows the user to obtain a threedimensional (3D) representation of the patient's in vivo radiopharmaceutical distribution. Planar nuclear imaging leads to a twodimensional (2D) image of a 3D object. In some cases, it can be difficult to detect or localize a certain feature due to the ambiguity introduced by background activity in the overlying and underlying tissue. Conversely, SPECT allows the 3D object to be represented as a series of thin, tomographic slices. This can lead to a substantial increase in image contrast that can greatly improve the ability to detect small features. Due to the 3D nature of SPECT, it can also greatly improve one's ability to localize these features. In addition, improved contrast can lead to an enhanced quantitative capability that can be of great value for both clinical and research purposes. The innovation of this work is a simple vectorizable algorithm for performing sparse matrix vector multiply in compressed sparse row (CSR) storage format. Unlike the vectorizable jagged diagonal format (JAD), this algorithm requires no data rearrangement and can be easily adapted to a sophisticated library framework such as PETSc. Adsorptive bubble separation processes make use of the selective adsorption of impurities at the gas/liquid or gas/solid interfaces of rising bubbles. The adsorbed impurities, which can be in soluble or insoluble form, are carried to the top of the bubble separation reactor, where they can be removed from the aqueous system (1,131,141,144). TO'Day, the adsorptive bubble separation processes are used for a variety of solute/liquid and solid/liquid separation applications (2-4,12-79) and many analytical and control methods have been developed for control and monitoring of the processes (5-11,14,53, 63,102—1-3,131,134). The process applications include water purification (12-18, 28-36,55,56,78-83, 89,92,101,106,107,111,112,118-124, 130,138,142-147), storm water runoff treatment (19,61,104,105,149), toxic substance removal (20,21,31-34,57, 63,107), algae separation (22,23,48,87), odor substance stripping (24,107), bacteria separation (25,26,55,56), groundwater purification (27,109-111,133,150), industrial waste treatment (49-54,57,58,60-78,81,82,93,96-101, 113-117,119,127,129,132,137,144), municipal primary and secondary clarification (40-47,85,86,91-95, 108,126,135,136, 139,140,146), tertiary clarification (88,89,115), sludge thickening (3,13,37-39,59,90, 125, 141), deinking operation, mineral compounds separation (31,57,84,154), and so forth. While there are various adsorptive bubble separation processes technically available, dissolved air flotation is the most commonly used flotation process in industry and municipalities tO'Day. In particular, dissolved air flotation is gradually replacing conventional sedimentation processes for clarification. Recently, new sequencing batch reactors (SBR) involving the use of dissolved air flotation (DAF) instead of sedimentation have been developed (133,151-153).
