Abstract

The article provides an overview of U.S. court cases pertaining to conflicts on rights to family privacy. Alabama Judge Charles Nice ruled that he would not grant the request of a pregnant 17-year-old for an abortion. A court granted certiorari to consider the question of whether patient Nancy Cruzan has a right under the constitution which would require the hospital to withdraw life-sustaining treatment from her under the circumstances.

Abstract

Chapter 2 of the book "Danish Council of Ethics Annual Report" is presented. It presents information on Council of Ethics activities in 2006. In May, the teaching material "Death? Good Grief!" was presented at the Ethical Forum for Young People for the debate topic on euthanasia. The Danish Council of Ethics came up with a report to assess whether a register containing DNA profiles of all Danish citizens to improve crime detection is ethical. The Danish Council launched a teaching site for ethically problematic issues like genetic engineering.

Abstract

The article offers the author's insights on how complex moral rules can be expressed axiologically. He mentions that action-guiding moral rules generated by scientific axiology might be complex like keeping promises except when one have promised to do wrong, telling the truth, and not killing a person unless capital crimes have been committed or active euthanasia is appropriate. He asks whether the destruction of an infinite value could be justified within a Hartmanean framework.
